My hubby heard a story on NPR this morning about a major wet pet-food recall. Several animals have died of kidney failure, but they're still not sure why. The company involved makes several store brands. Find more information here:

They're recalling them in Canada, too. I'm glad my dog only gets dry food.

Yeah... my cats have been on urinary tract health dry food since the oldest almost died from a UTI ten years ago. I'm sure he'd be especially vulnerable to kidney failure. This sucks so bad for those whose pets have been killed or sickened. frown

I've never fed any of my cats wet food. Not even when I was growing up. Only dry. My mom told me when I was a kid that wet food was bad for them. This seems to affect 90% of the wet food on the market.

Wet food is terrible for cats... too much ash and magnesium, which is responsible for the mzjority of feline UT problems. My boys only get Iams UT formula wet food as a special ( =very infrequent) treat.

Hmm, my vets have always said to mix things up. Daphne Velma gets wet food in the morning and dry for dinner. Luckily, her brand wasn't affected.

Our vet has always said it is better for the cats to not change their food. And we've noticed that when we've had to get a different brand. It really upsets their stomachs.

That same applies to some cats. One of ours, Lucky, is like the momma, going around and cleaning up the messes the others leave when they are sick. Just not in the usual way. puke

Actually, I've always heard you shouldn't change a dog's food much either, and that wet foods bad for them, too.

My aunt's a vet and she has us soak our dog's dry food in water to mush it up, then add more water (so it's soupy) and add a spoonful of wet food. The wet is optional, though-- just added protein and makes for a shiny coat, I believe.

My dog loves to take food out of her dish and toss it around. The farther she can get it from her dish the better she likes it. That makes mushy food sound like a very, very bad idea. lol
