I'm sure this has changed a fair bit since I was at school, unfortunately. that was a long time ago. But I agree it's a good system as it helps you understand international literature from a young age and opens your mind to other cultures.

Yes, it is a good system. French classical literature was, and still is, very popular in Greece since the 19th century. It was so highly regarded that many streets in downtown Athens were named after French authors like Victor Hugo, Rabelais, Chateaubriand (Satovriandou street, made to sound Greek, of course), Jean Favier etc.

I'm reminded that I recently bought a new copy of 'Pride and Prejudice', which was required reading for me in college. I think it should be for high school too. Its probably the best 'romantic' novel I've ever read, and I'm still shocked that I enjoyed it so much.
