I thought Daredevil was awesome. I wasn't expecting the Godfather or Casablanca, so I took it for what it was--and loved it. A good solid action movie with a very strong theme of faith and perseverence. And Jennifer Garner had a great performance.

I thought Hellboy was great too. It was refreshing to see a comic book action movie that wasn't a sociological essay (don't get me wrong, I love the X movies), and just was relentless in the action, characterization and direction of the movie.

Rickshaw, I've always seen the Order at the video store, but haven't picked it up. From what you say, it looks like it might be worth a watch.

The Hulk was good, but not quite what I wanted it to be. Still, it was definately worth a watch, and good enough for me to buy on DVD. I thought Bana did a good job as Banner in showing him as boring and hesitant (for a good Bana role, see Troy, he's great in it). I love Jennifer Connolly and Sam Elliot is perfect as Gen. Ross (he's certainly a rugged old bastard laugh ).

Another rented movie some of you may have seen: Prom Night, the B-Grade Horror movie staring a young Jaime Lee Curtis. As a B-Grade horror movie lover, I thought it was pretty cool. I was surprised at how creepy it was and how interesting the characters actually were--I was actually curious to see what would happen to the survivors of the movie. If you like this sort of thing, you'll like this as much as I did, as I've now added it to my DVD collection.

Watched GODSEND
God help me, what a waste of time, i want my 2 hrs back and the money i put out. The premise was alright to begin but then it got gradually more ridiculous. I had it figured out pretty much from the start but it was just too ridiculous to believe that it would actually end up being the outcome. Robert De Niro, why he decided to do this role is beyond me, its a sad role for an accomplished actor like bobby de niro and i am at a loss to explain why he thought this would be a good role in a great movie.

Cobie, just know that the order isn't a big special effects movie, though it has a little. It is much more a theological thriller. Still, it was fun.

I have seen love actually, and it was pretty good. One thing my wife and i both thought was that it would have benefited from about three less storylines, but still, entertaining.

The only thing about it was laura Linney. Was she married to the guy in the psych ward, or was he really her brother? We never seemed to get which it was. Still, it was refreshing to see a love story/sex story that DIDN'T have the perfect happy ending.

Oh, and if you are looking for fun horror instead of the just gore horror, try Critters and House. Both are more of the humor/horror. Truly fun campy movies.

Regarding The Hulk, I've said it before and I'll say it again: decent movie, but seriously needed two things -- 1)Rick Jones for levity and 2)better CGI for the Hulk's foes (the dogs and the Absorbing Man - the army battle was awesome though).

Finally got around to watching Love Actually last night. A very good movie indeed. I agree that it could have been better if they had focused on a few of the more interesting story lines. The Liam and son, Emma and Alan, Hugh Grant, and Laura Linney tangents would have sufficed. At a bare minimum, you could have gotten rid of the naked couple (although I'm sure there's some symbolism there that I missed) and Keira stories and still remained faithful to the study of love that the movie actually was. That guy in the ward was actually Laura Linney's brother, confirmed by the director on the dvd delected scenes.

I dug House back in the day. Not sure if it can live upto today's effects, but still a decent story. No way can I get my wife to watch Critters. She'll sniff that one out faster than you can say Crites. Personally I liked the flick, but then again, I'm easy.

Thanks for the love actually info. I didn't check that out on the dvd, and we really wondered.

No problem. Actually the deleted scenes were pretty good. I think Numf brought up the porn scene earlier in this thread and that one was classic. They had another great scene deleted from the film in which Emma's son wrote an essay on what he wanted for Christmas. His wish turned out to be that he wanted to be able to see farts when people farted. That way he knew for sure who had dealt it. Then they went through a couple scenes of people farting and him being able to see the farts. It was pretty funny. Like I said earlier, take out the naked couple and put these scenes back in and the movie would have been alot better, even though it was still pretty good.

Just watched Cho's Revolution. Geez, where was the funny? Yeah, i know that i posted this in more detail over on Dr. Gymll's section, but it was ...not good.

It was no where near up to par for her. I wont get into why many may not think i liked it, i talked about that on the other thread, but it was...just not funny. Much like Ellen's show after she came out. Its okay to have a theme, honest, but damnit, be FUNNY!

Well, that is just my opinion, anyway.

If you want a psychological thriller (in the most literal sense, I might add), check out Identity with John Cusack. This one had me rewinding (yep, still DVD-less) to help me figure out that jawdropping ending.

I checked out In the Cut, Jane Campion's trying too hard to be visually arty flick with Meg Ryan trying (unsuccessfully) to do a gritty movie. I predicted the mystery and the movie was slow, but Mark Ruffalo is great as always. In one scene, if you don't blink, you can see his Mr. P.

I also saw Ruffalo in 13 Going on 30 with Jennifer Garner. Total cheesecake of a movie, but I got completely sucked in by Garner's charm and the fabulous 80's music. Garner's Pat Benatar lines and Thriller dance were the price of the rental.

Identity was very good. Fast, nasty, and it didn't have the paint by numbers feel to it. But i liked Memento much better by the guy now doing batman begins.

I keep waiting for Identity 2 now, it just seemed set up for a sequel.

Identity and Memento were both pretty good. I think Identity is the one that ruined Secret Window for me though and why I saw the big reveal coming. For my money, Identity and Matchstick Men are the best movies discussed on this thread so far.

Memento was good just because it was different/original. In the end though, it didn't register as something that I needed to add to my dvd collection. Its pretty much a one shot movie much like Castaway was. See it once, never really want to see it again.

My other half is a total movie junkie and goes to the theatre all the time. We also own around 300 DVD's. But to catch the ones he's missed, he just signed us up for Zip, the Canadian equivalent of Netflix.

My first rental was Calendar Girls, which I loved. If you liked The Full Monty or Saving Grace, you'll enjoy this.

"Identity" had a cheat of an ending, to me. Let's just say that if the filmmakers are bending reality without telling the audience (unlike in, say, "Memento"), I consider it to be essentially dishonest. Sort of a cinematic practical joke ... and I loathe, loathe, LOATHE all practical jokes.

And in a crossed-wires note, the character in "Love Actually" that Laura Linney visits in the mental hospital is her character's brother; the actor, though, is not Linney's brother. One of the deleted scenes gave some important back-feeling about that relationship, and it ought not to have been snipped from the final film.

Are you referring to the ending ending or just the big "reveal" of what was actually going on? It didn't seem like cheating to me because they had established that something very weird was going on and once it was revealed, the clues that were dropped made sense. There was also a big-time hint at the very beginning when they showed the photo of the convict and it wasn't the guy we later see.

Something else else like "Fatal Attraction" seemed more of a cheat to me because they had turned and twisted the plot so much, had so many red herrings and covered so many bases that they could have ended the mystery any number of ways since they had dropped enough clues everywhere for anything to happen. It takes the mystery away when the plot just seems so manipulative for its own sake.

Lets see if we can get a fresh start to this thread...

Was home over the holidays and Dad rented like seven movies to be watched over two nights. The movies were:

Shrek 2: What can I say... I hated the first one. It was horrible. The movie marketing machine at its worst (or best if you're making money off of it). There's no way I'm ever going to watch the second.

Bourne Supremecy: Wasn't too fond of the first one, although it wasn't as bad as Shrek 1 was. The Bourne Identity just left me flat. I started watching Supremcy, but when the girl died... I lost interest. It just seemed so trivial, like the writers were saying, "Let's not hamstring him with a dame in this one." My dad fell asleep during this movie. Never finished watching it.

The Stepford Wives: Another horrible flick. Can't say one good thing about it. Defies logic on every level and never explains it (the only movie I've seen get away with this and still be topnotch is Ground Hog Day... and Stepford Wives is no Ground Hog Day). Nothing worse than a bad, two hour sitcom with no commercials. I felted cheated.

Elf: After the first three movies, I was ready to put my foot through the TV. I wasn't expecting much from Elf... never really liked Farrell (sp?) too much. That being said... Elf was an enjoyable flick. A nice little piece of whimsy that made me smile quite a few times. I didn't know Farrell had it in him.

Dodgeball: Finally down to the two movies I wanted to see. I thought Dodgeball would be better. It all just seemed so abrupt. Ben Stiller is hilarious... and there were quite a few smiles, but the overall story was just too much of a vehicle to get from one good gag to another. I went in with high expectations and was kinda let down overall by this movie. Kind of an example of the sum of the all being less than the total of the parts.

Hero: A very nice genre movie. My wife hated it. She was bored, and I have to admit that the movie was a little slow... but the visuals of this movie are absolutely fantastic. One of the most beautiful films I have ever seen. I'm having a problem putting my finger on what was wrong with this movie... I think the problem is that I just never connected with any character until the end, and by that time it was too late.

I can't remember the last movie... I'm pretty sure I didn't watch it. I wish I wouldn't have watched Stepford Wives. Elf was the best movie of the lot.

Just watched "The Village" last night. I thought it was much better than the reviews purported it to be. I think it was more entertaining than "Signs" at least. I still think that the director Shyamalan or whatever needs to break the cycle of "twist" movies or he's going to keep fighting a losing battle to top "The Sixth Sense."
