I'll go ahead and get the ball rolling this week:
#20 Texas A&M at Miami: This is a bit of a tough choice. I think A&M has a pretty good team this year, but they're completely untested. On the other hand, Randy Shannon has a long ways to go before he brings back the 'Canes from the meltdown of last year. Should be a very hard-fought game, but I'll go with homefield advantage and the fact that I hate Dennis Franchione worse than Tommy Tuberville and Phil Fulmer combined and would like nothing better for him to be taken down.
Winner - Miami
#22 Georgia at #16 Alabama: My pick for this contest should not come as a surprise, but I do try to include a bit of logic in my passion now and again. Matthew Stafford, Georgia's QB, has constantly underperformed since he got off the bus last year. I will give Georgia the fact that their defense is better than any we've faced thus far, but I believe our multifaceted offense is more than their match. Strong Bama offense vs. strong Ga. defense, decent Bama defense vs. weak-to-middling Ga. offense. We win this one in a more traditional SEC low-scoring defensive struggle.
Winner - Alabama
Washington at UCLA: Two teams with big dreams of glory dashed against other teams' victories against them last week. Both teams had fairly epic second-half meltdowns. And both teams very much need this win, probably UCLA more than Washington. That desperate need to win will propel the Bruins to victory... maybe.
Winner - UCLA
Georgia Tech at Virginia: Virginia may currently be sitting at the top of their ACC division, but a loss to Wyoming and a squeaker win against UNC doesn't exactly fill me with confidence. On the other hand, GT should feel no shame with a loss against what may be a top 5 team before this season is done (BC). Tech takes it to them and begins the work of winning their division.
Winner - Georgia Tech
#10 Penn State at Michigan: This is the game to get the monkey off Michigan's back. Beat Penn State, and all of a sudden, they're in the driver's seat in the Big Ten, with a good chance to run the table for the rest of the season. We've seen this before from Michigan... opening weak, but finishing strong.
Not gonna happen. Michigan is too far down and Penn State's too good.
Winner - Penn State
Memphis at Central Florida: I've always had a soft spot in my heart for my once-hometown Memphis Tigers. It's a shame that they're going up against the best running back in the country by yardage thus far and a team that nearly wrote their own Cinderella upset story last week.
Winner - Central Florida
#21 Kentucky at Arkansas: This may be my toughest pick of the entire week. Arkansas's pass defense last week was flimsy at best, and that's what KY does best. And you have two offensive Heisman hopefuls going at it against the teams' respective defenses. However, I think McFadden will start to separate himself from the rest of the pack of Heisman candidates the same way he separates himself from opposing defensive units. Can I tell you how glad I am that we will never play against him again?
Winner - Arkansas
Connecticut at Pittsburgh: This is a toss-up, as neither team has proven themselves yet against superior competition. Had Pitt beat Michigan State last week... Ah, who am I kidding, I'm still picking Pitt. Sorry, Cobie.
Winner - Pittsburgh
#12 South Carolina at #2 LSU: In an effort to at least pretend to keep things interesting, let me just point out that LSU lost Early Doucet this week to injuries. Will it matter? Not one bit.
Winner - LSU
North Carolina at #23 South Florida: If Butch Davis is going to start earning his paycheck at UNC, this would be the week to start. Does this mean I think UNC has a chance of upsetting this rising Florida program this week? Hell no.
Winner - South Florida

Okay, here are my picks for this week... #20 Texas A&M at Miami ~ Gosh, I have to pick this game right off the bat! What to do? What to do? Miami is still rebuilding and has issues at QB. I think Randy Shannon did the "wright" thing by promoting Kyle Wright (back) to starting QB. Freeman is still too green to be leading this team, but I've never been a big fan of Kyle's Either way, Texas A&M will be a challenge. Yet, as KP points out, A & M hasn't faced a challenge this year, having played Montana State, Fresno State & Louisiana Monroe. And they play Miami in the Orange Bowl on national TV on Thursday night which is never easy. Not sure whether it's the Hurricane fan or the prognosticator in me that has the upper hand but.... Vee's pick ~ Miami#22 Georgia at #16 Alabama ~ So far this season Georgia lost a close game to South Carolina ...Alabama won a close game against Arkansas. Those results speak for themselves. Vee's pick ~ AlabamaWashington at UCLA ~ Both teams had tough loses last week and will be looking to regain momentum. I predicted both to be in the hunt for the Pac 10 title. This game will keep that hope alive for one team and dash that hope for another. It will be interesting to see how both teams respond. Vee's pick ~ UCLAGeorgia Tech at Virginia ~ Georgia Tech is coming off of a devasting loss to Boston College while Virginia beat a decent Tar Heels team for their second conference win. The game is in Virginia but Georgia Tech is chomping at the bit to get back into the ACC race and I still think they can make it to the title game. Vee's pick ~ Georgia Tech#10 Penn State at Michigan ~ Michigan finally has a win and avoided going 0-3 but there is no way they will avoid going 1-3! Penn State will have their way with the Wolverines. Vee's pick ~ Penn StateMemphis at Central Florida ~ Memphis had a close loss to Mississippi in the first game of the year and UCF came this close to beating a #5 ranked Texas last week. The intense emotions of that game still linger in UCF's brand new Brighthouse Stadium and that should be plenty for them to handle divisional opponent Memphis Vee's pick ~ UCF#21 Kentucky at Arkansas ~ Tough game! Both these teams were in incredibly close, intense games last week end. Kentucky won and Arkansas lost in the last seconds of their respective games. Will Kentucky still be celebrating their victory over Louisville? Or will Arkansas still be licking the wounds inflictied by 'Bama? Whoever handles the past better will come out on top. The game is at Arkansas so that should give them the advantage and McFadden should be healthy enough to have an impact. Vee's pick ~ my upset of the week! KentuckyConnecticut at Pittsburgh ~ Connecticut is 3-0 but hasn't faced a major threat yet this season. Pittsburgh lost a close one to Michigan State last week. I like the Huskies' swagger but I'm not sure they can handle the Panthers' bite. Vee's pick ~ Pitt (but I'll be rooting for UConn to make a liar out of me )#12 South Carolina at #2 LSU ~ I really like this South Carolina team but do they have enough to handle a super powerful LSU? Spurrier can usually find a way to pull a rabbit out of hat...usually. But this is at LSU and even Stevie Boy isn't perfect. Vee's pick ~ LSUNorth Carolina at #23 South Florida ~ I've been singing the praises of the USF Bulls for the past few years and I think everyone else has started to notice. Butch Davis is a good coach but he doesn't have the weapons to handle a terrific USF team. Vee's pick ~ South Florida

My picks: Texas A&M at Miami - As much as I like Texas A&M and have always been a big supporter of them (see earlier in this thread), I just don't think they can take Miami at home. Like pointed out by my esteemed fellow LWers, I don't think A&M has gone up against a tough enough opponent this year yet. Miami is my pick. (Man, this will be one helluva a game and was a tough pick!). Georgia at Alabama - Honestly, Alabama is on a high right now, has home field and I'm really impressed with them. Not only that, but I've been pretty enthusiastic about Alabama since, oh, Sept, 2003 . So yeah, Georgia is no pushover, but what the hell--ROLL TIDE! AlabamaWashington at UCLA - As I've said, I'm big on Wash b/c of Ty Willingham, but I'm just not sure how good they are, whereas I know UCLA is good but just played like absolute crap last week. I think they'll want to regroup and show it was a fluke to loose to Utah that badly. I'm thinking UCLA. Georgia Tech at Virginia - last week I had Tech over BC and was surprised by their loss. Georgia Tech is a damn good team and I think this is a victory they absolutely need right now...and will definately grab it. Georgia Tech. Penn State at Michigan - Michigan's meltdown this year has been one of the top stories and Penn State's reclaiming their glory this year and last has been great to watch. Throw in the fact that I can't stand Michigan (b/c of ND) and want them to suffer with us, and that I have tons of Penn State friends (even though they hate ND too), and I have to go with Penn State. But to justify it, I honestly don't think Michigan, whose morale is already somewhat dead can handle the powerhouse that is Penn State right now, who without a doubt wants to beat Michigan at home. Memphis at Central Florida - I have to say outright that I don't know much about Central Florida but I do know a little more about Memphis. They played a valiant effort last week and almost beat one of the best teams in college football. But on the other hand, so did Central Florida, and they'll have home field advantage. This is a tough one for me. I'm going with Central Florida. Kentucky at Arkansas - this should be a great game. Kentucky surprised the hell out of me last week, but I still think Arkansas is a great team that had an extremely tough game against Alabama. This one will be very close--possibly three points. But I'm going ArkansasConnecticut at Pittsburgh - this kills me you know . I know Pitt is good and they're a big east rival not only here but in basketball, where we essential hate them. And I can't have too many of my picks match up against Legion World. So screw it--I play favorites and aren't in it to win percentage wise LETS GO HUSKIES!!!South Carolina at LSU - Part of me wants to predict a crazy upset again, but not this week. LSU is just too damn strong this year. LSU definately. I would rank them as #1 right now. North Carolina at South Florida - Vee got me watching SF two weeks ago and what I've seen and read has impressed me. NC is good, but its too early in the season to say that they're *that* good. I think South Florida will pull this one off. PS - I've lingered in the 'post a reply' box for a few extra minutes thinking if I should go back to the Memphis/Central Florida game and change it. I'm gonna stick with Central Florida I think. Man, that's a tough pick!

#20 Texas A&M at Miami: I'm going with Miami. I used to be a Canes fan as a kid as well as a Gator. I'm not as big of a Miami fan anymore but I am rooting for them. #22 Georgia at #16 Alabama: Two teams I don't care for. Something else else about Saban I just don't like. These teams are pretty even in my eyes. Georgia. Washington at UCLA: Again these teams are pretty even in my eyes. At UCLA? UCLA. Georgia Tech at Virginia: I am a GT fan. Maybe cause they are called the Yellow Jackets. Anyways I think they are good and pick GT! #10 Penn State at Michigan: How can you not root for Joe Pa? Penn St. Memphis at Central Florida: UCF. All the FL teams are better tham peopel think. #21 Kentucky at Arkansas: Don't know much about this one. KY is going to come down from their high. I never rank inter-state rivalry upset winners too high against other teams. In inter-state rivalries one team can be #1 and the other #99 and you can throw the rankings out the window. blah...Arkansas. Connecticut at Pittsburgh: Pitt had Dan Marino and um...I don't know much about these teams. Pitt. #12 South Carolina at #2 LSU: I am praying SC beats LSU. Have I said I hated LSU? SC! North Carolina at #23 South Florida: Hmm, I'm a Duke fan who hates NC and South Florida is my alma mater. USF!(go bulls)

Legion World College GameWeek - Sunday Morning Recap #20 Texas A & M 17 Miami 34 The Hurricanes finally got their game back and that was bad news for the Aggies. Kyle Wright played what may well have been his best game as QB, expertly leading the Canes to an impressive victory over Texas A & M. The Canes first offensive series of the game was a masterpiece: 18 plays, 80 yards, 5 for 5 in 3rd down conversions culminating in a direct snapped 7 yard touchdown run up the middle by Cooper (with Wright lined up at wide receiver.) That series chewed up about 8 minutes of the first quarter and set the tone for the game. Coming into this game, the Aggies had a high powered offense, averaging 46 points per game but were held to 38 total yards in the first half with the Canes up 24-0 by halftime. The second half wasn't much better although the Aggies did manage to score 17 points while Miami added another 10. In the end, Miami posted 402 total yards with Wright throwing for 275, eclipsing the Aggies total output of 240 yards. #22 Georgia 26 #16 Alabama 23 Once again the Crimson Tide was involved in one of the most fun, nervewracking games of the weekend but this time they fell just short of pulling out another amazing victory over a ranked team. Alabama and Georgia seemed evenly matched on paper and that proved to be the case in the game, which went into overtime with the teams even at 20 points apiece after another amazing last minute series by John Parker Wilson to tie it up. During overtime, 'Bama only managed a field goal on their first series which opened the door for Georgia to pull out the win with a great throw by QB Stafford into the end zone to Mickey Henderson. Both teams deserved this win but the Dawgs walked away with it. Washington 31 UCLA 44 Wasn't able to catch any of this game but it sounds as if the Bruins, coming off of a surprising loss to Utah last week, were in control for the entire game. Although Washington challenged numerous times, especially in the 4th quarter when they closed to within 7 points twice, UCLA managed to respond each time with a score of their own and hold off the Huskies for a much needed win to keep them in the hunt for the Pac 10 title. Georgia Tech 23 Virginia 28 Virginia may be the surprise contender in the ACC having held off the Yellowjackets last minute run to go 3-0 in ACC play. They went up early, leading Georgia by 21-7 after 13 minutes of play and spent the rest of the afternoon trying to hold off GT. The Yellowjackets slowly crept back into the game and finally managed to take the lead by the slimmest of margins (23-21) but paid the price for a very costly mistake. Late in the 4th quarter, the Cavaliers punted to GT's Andrew Smith, who missed the catched only to have it recovered by Virginia on GT's 26 yard line. On the next play, Virginia QB Sewell hit Staton Jobe for a 26 yard touchdown reception, taking back the lead and holding on for the win. This loss means GT is now 0-2 in ACC play and seems to take them out of contention for the Coastal division title. They can still get back into position to challenge but it won't be an easy road...a road which starts next week with Clemson. #10 Penn State 9 Michigan 14 With the season Michigan has had, most people thought it highly unlikely that the Wolverines could add to their 8 game winning streak against Paterno's Nittany Lions but that's exactly what they did in a 14-9 win against a 10th ranked Penn State team. Michigan scored a touchdown in the first quarter and then held Penn State to a field goal in each of the last three quarters while only managing to put together one more touchdown drive of their own in the 4th. Penn State had one last chance with the ball on their own 13 and 1:28 to go but QB Morelli had to toss the ball away on the first two downs and then threw two near interceptions on down 3 and 4 to end the Nittany Lions hopes for a come back. 'Grats to Blockade Boy for making this pick. None of the rest of us gave Meeechigan a chance in hell against JoePa Memphis 20 Central Florida 56 UCF has now scored 50+ points two weeks in a row and has established themselves as a contender not only for the C-USA crown but for mid major bowl bid (at least) Even Memphis' 20 points are a bit deceiving since the cam late in the 3rd and 4th quarters when UCF was playing mostly 2nd and 3rd stringers. As a matter of fact, 2nd string QB Mike Greco played most of the 2nd quarter and almost all of 2nd half, completing 11-12 passes for 151 yards and rushing for 77 yards and 2 touchdowns himself. Greco's 50 rushing yards in the first half topped the output of the entire Memphis team which only managed 41 rushing yards in total in the first half. #21 Kentucky 42 Arkansas 29 When picking this game, I said that whoever handles the past better will come out on top. It appears Kentucky was able to do that, though it was far from easy. This was another nailbiter for both of these teams that remained in doubt until the end of the game. With this win, Kentucky has made a statement that they will be a force to be reckoned with in the SEC but it won't be an easy time for them. They still face games against South Carolina, LSU, Florida and Georgia as well as some lesser challenges against some other good SEC teams. Arkansas on the other hand now has to deal with questions about how much desire they really have. Have they put all their eggs in the McFadden bandwagon whose wheels have come off in each of the last two games? The Razorbacks can still contend, but they have some retooling to do. Connecticut 34 Pittsburgh 14 Oh ye of little faith! (I'm looking at me here) I was looking for these results all day as I watched numerous other games on a wild Saturday but I kept missing them on the scroll at the bottom of the screen. I'll have to wait for Cobie to give us the highlights because I saw no mention of this game on any of the recap shows either. That's a shame really because the Huskies are now 4-0 and sit at the top of the Big East to the surprise of many. Granted, they have just started their conference schedule and still must face Big East powerhouses Rutgers, South Florida and West Virginia, all highly ranked teams. But the Huskies have certainly impressed with their success so far, particularly since this is only their second (or is it third) season in Division 1A. Congrats to UConn fans everywhere (and Cobie in particular ) and I sure hope this was televised somewhere so Cobie could enjoy it. #12 South Carolina 16 #2 LSU 28 All Spurrier could do was smile a bittersweet smile when LSU ran a trick play off a fake punt for a touchdown to increase LSU's lead to 14 (21-7) at halftime. After all, Spurrier is the master of trickery when it comes to college football and this play by the Tigers opened up an insurmountable lead over the talented Gamecocks team. In the second half, LSU kept SC scoreless in the third but SC whittled away at the score in the 4th managing to score a field goal and touchdown but LSU added another TD of their own while pounding the SC line for yard after yard. This was one of the big tests for LSU this year and they are definitely in control of their own destiny although they still have some tough games ahead North Carolina 10 #23 South Florida 37 What can I say...the Bulls are for real and they proved it against the Tar Heels this past Saturday. North Carolina is far from being a bad team, having lost to East Carolina and Virginia by a combined 5 points in their last two games but South Florida proved they are deserving of the Top 25 ranking. Even when Bulls QB Grothe fumbled the ball away twice, his defense went out and took the ball back again on intercetions against NC QB Yates. Yates, a decent QB in his own right spent much of the game on his back or running away froma swarm of Bulls defenders. He was never really able to play his game, finishing with only 85 passing yards and getting sacked 4 times. South Florida could easily have gotten caught looking past North Carolina to their Friday Night showdown with #5 West Virginia this week but didn't. Now that the Tar Heels are out of the way, however, they can focus on trying to beat the Mountaineers...again. After all, it was their 24-19 vitory over West Virginia in Morgantown last year that really put the Bulls on the radar for many. The way the Bulls & Mountaineers have been playing this year should make Friday night's game a much watch game for every fan of college football. A victory by the Bulls this week could propel them into the stratosphere. Some thoughts/comments about some other games yesterday... Syracuse beat Louisville...yes, you read that right! Syracuse went into Papa John Stadium in Louisville and beat the 18th ranked Cardinals 38-35 ending the Orangemen's 20 game losing streak, the second longest in the nation. Syracuse proved that while Louisville has a potent offense, they have no defense to speak of, and you can't win many games that way. #15 Clemson handled a strong NC State Wolfpack team 42-20, making a statement that no one in the ACC should overlook them. Mississippi gave #3 Florida a run for it's money on Saturday, proving once again that anything can happen on any given Saturday in the SEC. The Rebels lost 30-24 but scared the pants of the Gators. Ball State came within 1 point of upsetting #24 Nebraska. The 41-40 victory by the Cornhuskers raises lots of questions about the Big 12. Can anyone challenge Oklahoma or Texas for the title? Keep an eye on Missouri & Kansas. Florida Atlantic beat North Texas 30-20. The Owls are now 3-1 with victories over Middle Tennessee, Minnesota and North Texas and sit atop the Sun Belt Conference. They have 3 non conference games coming up and will likely lose all three (at Kentucky next week, followed by South Florida the following week, and then at Florida on Nov 17) but could run the table in the Sun Belt and end up 8-3. Howard Schnellenberger sure knows how to build football programs. Finally, with the emergence of UCF and USF this year, can anyone really argue that the state of Florida isn't the best football state in the country? Heck, you could create a powerhouse conference with just Florida schools! Think about it... Miami, Florida State, Florida, UCF, South Florida, Florida Atlantic, Florida International. Add in the Florida A & M Rattlers (of the MEAC) or Jacksonville University (of the Pioneer League) and you would have one hell of a conference with very little travel expense for the member schools. You'll never see Florida leave the SEC nor FSU or Miami (I think) leave the ACC but ... stranger things have happened

The Hurricanes finally got their game back and that was bad news for the Aggies.
That's Texas A&M, Vee. You calling them Texas is like mixing up FSU and Florida. GO HORNS!

Even though a good amount of my picks didn’t work out, I still have so much fun on Saturday’s watching college ball that it doesn’t really matter *that* much to me . I was busy all day so didn’t get to watch many days games and as the evening set in, was shocked—SHOCKED—to learn that Penn State lost to Michigan. Really though, I should have thought about that more before I made the pick. But then I tuned in at my favorite bar, as all my friends watched an awesome Yankees last minute win and a boring Red Sox game (booooo Red Sox), I had my bartender dedicate one TV specifically for me (I’m pretty known at the bars around me ) and watched two AWESOME games throughout the night. The Alabama / Georgia was just as fun as the Bama / Arkansas game last weekend, and I was enthralled enough in it to the point that my bro and some friends started watching it with me. (They know I’m in some kind of college football bragging rights pool but I left out the ‘comic book website’ aspect of it ). I even let loose a ‘ROLL TIDE!’ at the top my lungs after a TD just for the hell of it (did I mention I was drinking at the bar?). I also had them switch back and forth to Kentucky / Arkansas where Kentucky literally blew me away by how well they played. Mainly b/c I picked Arkansas I was rooting for them (and I also felt they were unfairly dropped from the Top 25 by the poll-sters) but this was still a fun game to watch. When we finally moved to a more popular bar that was over-crowded, all the TV’s were focused on the USC game (which lets face it, was pretty boring) so I made the bold proclamation that USC would never be able to beat LSU should those two teams meet this year. But my favorite moment was probably when I looking at all the scores on the bottom of the screen and saw that UCONN beat PITT!!!. Sorry I can't give a recap Vee, I didn't get a chance to watch one minute of the game on Sat. But I still celebrated. And man, those obscure Florida teams play some good ball Nebraska almost lost AGAIN! To Ball State no less! Louisville! WFT?! I'm shocked!

Ruminations:
Let's get the hard one out of the way first. Bama lost, and it was a tough one. I'm not sure if it isn't harder to lose one that you fight tooth and nail for until the very end and is never settled until that last second, but whatever the case, we were on the opposite end of a nail-biter just like last week's Arkansas game. I have to hand it to a tough Georgia team for coming out and taking it to us. I thought after being smoked on that first drive, our defense came out and played admirably. Our offense needs to find the same intensity and drive that characterizes them in clutch situations for the entire game. Offensively, that whole first half was sort of a shambles, but I know the talent and skill is there them to do much better in future games. And I can't take anything away from Georgia's defense... they were superb. I think Georgia just outplayed us a tiny bit on both sides of the ball, and that showed in our physical and mental fatigue level when the overtime period came. A tough loss, but a great game, and we should learn from our mistakes. Whew. ROLL TIDE!!!
Nebraska's demise and drop from the poll cannot come too soon for me. I mean, Ball State. Really.
Louisville is reeling, but they could still spoil some teams' national picture hopes in the Big East.
The top 5 teams still are looking very solid.
I can't believe that Kentucky is going to be able to hold this momentum for too much longer in the very difficult SEC East, but for now, wow. I didn't expect that result in Fayetteville. And finally, Michigan still has a long way to go, but winning over PSU was a pretty huge start. I had a feeling it might happen. Next time, I should pick with my heart and not with my head! Overall, another great week of college football action, but I guess I can't be blamed for feeling a bit deflated by the emotional Alabama loss.
