According to Rolling Stone Magazine, these are the top ten worst songs of the 1990's...what do you think?
1. Aqua "Barbie Girl" 2. Los Del Rio, "Macarena" 3. Billy Ray Cyrus, "Achy Breaky Heart" 4. Vanilla Ice, "Ice Ice Baby" 5. Chumbawamba, "Tubthumping" 6. Hanson, "MMMBop" 7. Celine Dion, "My Heart Will Go On" 8. Baha Men, "Who Let The Dogs Out?" 9. Right Said Fred, "I'm Too Sexy" 10. 4 Non Blondes, "What's Up?"

I'd argue the ranking of the top four, but cannot argue too much with them...especially 2, 3, and 4. Probably put Ice up at number one...I detested that song the first time I heard it.
Personally I liked Too Sexy, and didn't mind Tubthumping (at least the first 500 time that it was played.)

I agreed instantly with their pick for number 1. and 2.
and 7 gah!! and 8 !! double GAH!!!
9,10, and 4 were fun for a little while to my junior highschool and highschool ears. not so, for #6 though.

Any listing of the worst music of the 90s with no Garth Brooks on it is woefully incomplete.

The best thing about #8 was my son hearing it and laughing. Then when my daughter was singing it one day (she liked it from one of the Garfield movies); every time she said, who let the dogs out, he would shout out 'ME!'
I give the song a bit of a pass for the laughs we got from that one.

I liked Tubthumping too (twas a rousing anthem, I say!).
I also checked out the article and its accompanying vids at Rolling Stone just now, and this was the first time I've ever heard "MMMBop". Considering their ages, it was pretty impressive.

How did you escape hearing that song until just now?

While arguements can be made about all of these songs, I will only make them for the ones I like personally...
BARBIE GIRL was infectious and actually made a statement. That it is # 1 is nonsense. I knew NO ONE who didn't love this when it came out.
TUBTHUMPING is pure genius and whoever put it on this list at Rolling Stone should be demoted to TV GUIDE.
I'M TOO SEXY was perfect disposable silly pop, which is needed sometimes. It can't all be Lucinda Williams and (your favorite serious artist of choice here) ALL the time, peeps.
WHAT'S UP is the epitome of 90s angst and belongs NOWHERE NEAR this list. It was the absolute shiznit when it was released.
I read the article and feel whoever compiled this list has an issue with female singers in general and lightheartedness for sure.
But I can't defend MACARENA. I rememebr that playing at the gay bar and everyone would start doing it, I would storm off the dancefloor, angrily sipping my Zombie, and would wait for Nine Inch Nails or Way Out West to start up...

What Lash said!
Now, let's take a Legion World poll of the Worst Worst Songs of the 90's Lists and vote Rolling Stone's #1. Then we'll send them the results along with a note saying we agree about the "Macarena/Vanilla Ice" part!
(Couldn't say for sure, Dev. I do remember hearing about Hanson and wanting to check them out. I just never got around to it)
Stupid Rolling Stone!

Well, I'd like to nominate some non-threatening Will Smith raps... I kinda like my raps with a hint of menace Let's observe some MC Hammer songs, shall we? (but NOT "Have You Seen Her"... that one I like)

I definitely think "What's Up?" is a bizarre choice for the list. I'd definitely substitute pretty much any of Alanis Morisette's hits for it.

I have to take exception to MMMBop being on the list. Never underestimate the power of well written and well performed pop song. This was both. A very infectious hook. The boys' harmony was impeccable, especially considering their ages when it was recorded. The Hanson brothers haven't had a hit of that magnitude since, but they've continued to record and their talent has just grown. I met them briefly at a fundraising event a couple of years ago. They seemed like nice guys.
Ice Ice Baby should have topped the list.
Beauty's where you find it. Not just where you bump and grind it.

I agree that, taken in context with their ages, MMMMBop should get a pass. The little guys wrote it themselves!!
What was that crap-ass Michael and Janet Jackson duet... "Scream"? the self-styled King of Pop wasn't above releasing his fair share of 90s stinkers...

The Will Smith Miami song at the tail end of the decade? Hello, that one actually forced me to try ecstasy to escape it.

Hmmm. Maybe we could send supportive letters to all the performers smeared by this MUSICAL WITCH HUNT!
Not Celine Dion, though, since I suspect that she actually is a musical witch who might attack us with her army of flying monkeys.

What's Up is terrible. Possibly worse than We Built This City.
Macarena is boss.
I have no opinion whatsoever on MMMBop.
