Well, I've officially begun a serious effort to start losing weight about two weeks ago. I'm almost 40, so I feel it's now or never to start making an effort to turn things around before I start getting really serious health problems. My weight's already netted me Type 2 diabetes and blood pressure, triglyceride and cholestorol issues. Basically, I started the first week cutting out all drinks except water and cut down my portions and made smarter food choices. I've continued this beyond and added some exercise to the equation, courtesy of outdoor chores and my Wii Fit game. I'm not sure what I weighed when I started, but I'm sure it was north of 250, perhaps as much as 260. As of last night, I weigh 238, so I must be doing something right so far! Short term, I wanna get south of 200 and resolve the diabetes problem. Long term? Well, maybe I'll find out what my "ideal weight" is supposed to be. Here we go, and wish me luck! (sure am hungry, though! )

Lardy, I am so proud of you! Remember that you have your Legion World friends behind you and we're here to support you in your efforts. Now, once you're all svelte, what are you going to call yourself?

Since I can't imagine any of you guys calling me anything else after all these years, maybe I'l just Kryptonianize (new word? ) my nickname to "Lar-De"?

I drink mostly water, Seymour, but I occasionally drink a glass of skim milk before a meal to make me feel a little fuller. I'm addicted to diet colas but have only had two or three servings since I started dieting.

Yogurt's good for calcium. Weight Watchers actually makes a really good one that has a much better consistency than a lot of the other "light" yogurts, which are too thin for my taste.
Speaking of WW, I've been slipping the last couple months so decided to try weekly meetings again for that regular accountability. The program at work got canceled, so I tried a men-only meeting this morning. It's a lot different than the mostly female meetings at work -- much more laid back and not as angsty. Almost too laid back, though, so we'll see.

Update: Slow and steady she goes. As of tonight, I've lost six more pounds and am down to 232. I've stuck as much as humanly possible to healthy eating options with fairly minor missteps. Wii Fit has lost its lustre somewhat, though, as its games/exercises get a little boring after awhile. I'm not exercising every day but a lot more frequently than I did before all this. And I've noticed my energy level has gone WAY up from what it was! I'm enjoying eating foods involving fresh fruits and veggies. The most tasty for me right now are wheat wraps with turkey cold cuts, tomatoes, cucumbers, cheese and lettuce. Goood stuff! Anyhow, I hope to see the 220's over the next week. Wish me luck!

As of right now, I'm at 228, which is four less pounds than the last update. I'm still eating well, but the will to exercise is just not there. I'll try to push myself to do it on a more regular basis, so that I can see the pounds atart to shed at a better rate.
(Damn! How long do you have to be on a diet before the hunger pangs start to lessen?!?!)

Congratulations, Lardy.
As for exercise, I've found that forcing myself to do it doesn't do the trick. I'm more disciplined if I'm doing an activity I enjoy, such as swimming, and if I vary the routine from time to time, such as using treadmills instead of swimming.

LL, We'll have to start calling you Svelte Boy.
It looks like I'll have to start making use of this thread. I saw the diet doctor today. He gave me a list of what I can and can't eat. To make it more difficult, I am a fussy eater. I'm going to have trouble elimating starches.
I'm already on an exercise program. On just exercise alone (and a little bit of cutting down the fast food) I've gone from a high of 316 to 299 today.

New Year's Resolution time! In 2009, I had some concerns about my cardiovascular system, but just today learned that everything there tested at normal. So, it's FITNESS TIME!

As many of you know, I had to deal with a lot in the last several months. My mom, who is currently living with me till her new place is ready, and I decided we'd both take a few months off dieting. We had fun, but now it's time to get back--and to lose the weight we've put on. I've, unfortunately, picked up 30 pounds in the last four months or so.
I'm back on Weight Watchers and will lose it. In addition to Mother and the support here, several coworkers and I have pledged to lose weight together.
I'll keep everyone posted. I feel bad about it, but I'm taking the steps to fix it.

Yikes! 30 pounds? Sorry to hear about that, Rocky. But I know you'll take it back off. Just goes to show what we face trying to keep the pounds off. On the other hand, I was pleased to step on the scale today and find that I haven't gained weight as I had feared over the holidays. Despite constant lapses in judgement and succumbing to temptation on multiple occasions, the Wii Fit scale shows me at 213 pounds. Granted, I've registered a low weight of 212 earlier in the year, but I'll take 213 in a heartbeat. Now, it's time for me to refocus on the good eating habits and find a way to work exercise back into the equation, so I can realize my dream and get below 200, hopefully by the summer! If I achieve that goal, I'll start looking to go down further and find out what my elusive idea weight might be. But getting to minus-200 will be my focus for the nonce. Unfortunately, I celebrated by having Taco Bell tonight. D'oh! That and I just have to find a way to overcome my personal Kryptonite at work: Cookies!

I have a terrible relationship with food. I'm really bad at stopping before I get too full. I tend to grab those last 3 or 4 bits of meat out of the stir-fry pan even though I'm totally stuffed. I will eat a third plate of spaghetti even though I'm totally stuffed.
Cookies? I can't just have one or two, I need 6 or 7.
I thought fast food was the worst of my food issues, but it's actually portion control. We do eat pretty healthy at home, but I kind of blow that when I end up so stuffed I have to lay down to recover from dinner.
I'm totally a stress eater. I've been really stressed out lately, though I'm pleased to say that's all easing up.
So, the good news is, my family has joined the gym. It's a REALLY nice gym, it's the one I used to have a free membership to at my long-time former job.
Now my goal is to get in there and do the work, which I quite enjoy, but also, to bring some discipline and order to my relationship with food.
Gah! I hope that didn't become TMI!

I am sure you can do it Sketchy!
Good luck with your goal, Lardi. My doctor said my ideal weight is under 200. So that is my goal.
Rocky, I know you can do it. You did it before, you can do it again.
Just to let people here know, my last weigh in (Jan 8) had me at 244. My starting weight in October was 299.
