More J-Hud/DREAMGIRLS news!
PEOPLE magazine says "(J-Hud) sings her heart out" and "steals every scene she appears in".
E-WEEKLY calls the Jen's DREAMGIRLS soundtrack performances a "calling card announcing the arrival of a new superstar".
Jen also appears on the cover of the current US magazine-- 60 pounds lighter. Holy Hubba-Hubba! My crush on Jen just elevated to diva-love!
Poor Beyonce, losing all the attention to Jennifer! *secretly snickering about it!*

I was so happy to hear all the rave reviews for Jennifer! When I saw the movie, I was just in awe the whole time. Loved it! Her version of "And I am Telling You I'm Not Leaving" is amazing, but ALL of her performances are. She's a very good actress, too.
However, I must stand up for my girl, Beyonce. She gives SO much star power and is SO glamorous and beautiful as well as talented. She wrote the new song, "Listen" which I cannot get out of my head, and she'll get a ton of awards for it.
Jen and B both shine. It's the other girl, who's cute and funny in the movie, who gets overshadowed. Actually, there's a fourth girl, too, but she gets even less of the spotlight.
Eddie Murphy deserves all the praise he's receiving, too. He plays a very James Brown-like character, and the whole time I wanted him to do his "Hot Tub" song from his SNL days! Jamie Foxx plays it straight and solid.
A great cast and great performances. I haven't grabbed the soundtrack cd yet, but I will. I'll certainly be buying the dvd later on.
(I had meant to start a Dream Girls thread.... maybe I still will.)

Oh, a couple of weeks ago, I saw Fantasia perform on the Tyra Banks show. She was very Fantasia, so if you're a fan (like me) you'd love it! The song was funky, but I'm afraid not too memorable, as I cannot think of the title now.

Well, the season premiere was just what we expect from Idol.... lots of deluded people who just can't believe it when they're rejected. They even had an uncannily familiar "REJECTED" graphic that they used for a while.
They had a couple interesting stories of people who tried out. Can't wait to see how they do in Hollywood. Former Crack Baby, Navy Man, Auto Mechanic Girl Whose Husband is in the War, etc.
Tomorrow night...the freaks from my city! Can't wait!

Dean,
I felt they spent too much time on the Rejects. This is the part of the competition I don't really care for. You know these poor fools only make it through to the judges to be camera fodder for the show... I definitely prefer to see how many make it in, not how many were rejected. I believe we only saw 3 people in the first hour make it to the Hollywood round. I guess I'll have to skip watching until we get to the next level. I feel badly for the people who think they can sing, but are slapped silly four ways to Sunday and left crushed.

I actually agree. I'd prefer it if there was just maybe a little bit of the silly or weird/wacky stuff and more time spent on showing the good talent. I'd even further prefer to get right to the competition, and skip all this stuff, however, it seems like the show is built upon it.
I was watching AI Rewind, and it seemed that Simon didn't like Kelly Clarkson at ALL at first! Shows how the actual competition and styling can turn things around.

I was really hoping they would change the format this year and focus on the ones that were put through to Hollywood. Guess that ain't happening. I'm with Craig. I may wait until they get the wannabes to Hollywood before I keep watching. If they want to focus on the rejects they really should just do it in a special.

As long as those ratings are there, the format isn't likely to change I'll bet.
Last night's favorites: Shakira-wannabe, zit-nose 16 y/o boy and Sarah ("Over the Rainbow").

Breaking news from Variety : Fox phenom "American Idol" opened to boffo numbers Tuesday night, with the two-hour premiere ranking as the second highest-rated episode of the series to date -- and easily topping any primetime program this season.
According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, the opening night of auditions on "American Idol" averaged a 15.7 rating/36 share in adults 18-49 and 37.3 million viewers overall, up about 5% vs. its premiere of one year ago. The only other "Idol" telecast to rate higher was the May 2003 season finale between Reuben Studdard and Clay Aiken.

This is the first time I've watched the audition rounds (I usually wait for the top 15 or so) and I must say, I suspect many of the rejected applicants have characteristics and abilities to become a Legion of Super Idol-Villains! Swearing Juggling Kid (tap dancer too)! #1EX-Fan Girl (gothy)! Sing To Myself Lass (with a neck tie!)! Disgruntled Vocal Coach Lad (with atomic pitch whistle)! I can't wait for when they attack the contestants that made it through!

Heh!
Tonight was a good one for fans of the bad stuff....
my faves:
"3rd time's the charm" Afro-Lad, despite his cockiness, because I like that someone can *finally* click with the right look and song and make it through.
Indian brother & Sister-- so sweet and genuine. i think they are going to be fast favorites of the viewers.
Beat-Box Blake... he was awesome!
Big Blonde Delusional Lass, Kid Creepy Zitzman, Grotesque Lips Lass, and Big-Lisp Lad & Popeyed-Monkey Kid were favorite bad performers!

Hmmmm.... if Scott's Simon and MEL is Randy, I guess that makes me Paula! That's fine! Of course I'd send you to Hollywood, Lash! MEL, that toon is awesome! I forgot about it.

Hmm... I actually don't have much to say about this episode. I'm already tired of watching bad auditions.

I already talked about the bad auditions but I just had to add that it is at the point already where I can't really tell you who I liked because of the mind-numbingly overwhelming time spent on the bad ones. Even me, being basically tone deaf, wouldn't make someone like the red head kid last night keep going for longer than a regular contestant gets during the competition. It is borderline ludicrous. The only way to tell the good from the bad right now is the good get about five seconds of a song while the bad get five minutes.

I've auditioned for singing competitions before, so I know what the auditioners are going through. At this point, I'm not interested in doing it anymore. I'll just stick with karaoke.
Every new season of AI, though, I do kinda practice a lil more. That rockstar dream is settled somewhere in the back of my head....

Oh, btw, my friends think I'm good at karaoke. My wife (who's had choir training) thinks I'm good but I need training. My kids just think I'm loud.

Did they say there were only about 20 that made it from Memphis?
I have one word:
SUNDANCE!
I'm already a fan!
Also, I really liked Backup Singer Girl. Out of everyone we've seen so far, those two are my favorites.
It's going to be a real mixed bag in Hollywood.

I loved Sundance Head too. My favorite so far. In addition to Backup Singer Girl I also liked the guy who looked like Fidel Castro. I'm glad they let him continue on.
