Based on Scott's supplied numbers for Hung's first CD, Hung has certainly and by far outsold Latoya, John and Jasmine-- never even mind adding in the figures from his second & third releases, which will boost him even higher... higher possibly than both Diana DeGarmo and Kim Locke ("8th World Wonder" chick I couldn't remember earlier). I'll follow up on this ASAP with that sales info when I find it again. As for last night's DENEVER show, I think there was a better bad-to-good ratio last night, it seemed that way anyway. re: the young, stuttery cowboy Simon & Randy put through-- has that ever happened before? Where Simon and Randy put someone through on Paula's "NO" vote? If so, it certainly doesn't happen often. Li'l Cowboy was the one I was happiest to see make it through, though I've learned not to get too attached this early-- because in the past, Hollywood has seen the dismissal of some of my early favorites ("Scooter Girl", Blue-haired chick). And yes, it's all over Memphis about the 2 scraggily-beared twins Terrell and Darrell who made it through on episode 1... one of 'em's down at 201 Poplar as I type this (JAIL, for you non-Memphians) and the other is expected to turn himself in any nanosecond now. Apparently they both have interesting rap sheets already. I don't expect we'll be seeing them in the Hollywood episodes. AND.... according to a link at my AI Yahoogroup, Kelly Clarkson has relented about her songs being used by AI in the wake of sharp critcism from Simon Cowell. GAWD, I'm so glad AI's back....!!

I want to hear a direct quote from Kelly about her songs being used. My gut reaction is that she doesn't owe American Idol anything anymore. She was part of why the show catapulted to giant fame, she made them a TON of money, now she's doing her thing and she has the right to conduct her career how she wants. She has publicly been nothing but appreciative and supportive of the show. I support her singing "I Will Always Love You" to them, and move right on. Also, I find it ironic that Simon can get into a huge contract negotioation, all about *money*, get what he wants, and then make comments about Kelly like in the article. Pheh!
WAIT! Didn't they actually show someone singing one of her songs already? "Since U Been Gone"? Anyone record the show?
I missed Wed night, but my wife told me about the girly guy. Deluded. It reminded me of how Simon treated that thin black guy with the beard on the first episode. He told him to shave and dress like a woman. Is Simon a little anti-gay or feminine guys? May I point out... lessee...ALL the guys on season 1? (Well, except Justin, but he was a pretty boy.)
Scott, I agree with you that these first few episodes are boring. I wish they could edit all their audition episodes into one two hour season premiere, and then move right into the Hollywood rounds after that. I'd even like the Hwood rounds to be edited down and get right into the actual finalists who we vote on.

Dean, you're right-- some poor lass DID butcher "Since U Been Gone" on Tuesday night's show, IIRC.

Was it Tuesday's? I thought I heard it but have already gotten rid of that one. I still have last night's on my TiVo. But do you think what all the fuss is about is during actual performances for the competition? I can't see how they could possibly tell people during the open auditions they can't perform certain songs.

Scott, I actually don't know for sure, but I'd guess that songs can be sung in the auditions, but the producers have to pay to air those songs.
Labradorian, I don't mean to be argumentative, but maybe she did owe American Idol at first, but her career has blossomed since. Does she owe them forever? I point to my Dolly Parton/Porter Wagner analogy. Should Dolly have stayed on the Porter Wagner Show forever? Plus, it seems Kelly's songs will be used anyway. Also, we don't know for sure if Kelly herself refused to have the songs used, or if it was her management/spokespeople. I like Kelly Clarkson, so I can't help but defend her.

i didnt think you were being argumentive, just putting in my opinion, you are just giving your opinion. I think she owes AI for life and i also like kelly clarkson. She has proved herself but only because of AI would anyone have heard her in the first place.

I'm so disappointed that the two bearded twins turned out to be scam artists and felons. They were really quite talented and charming (as all great scam artists need to be, obviously!) I think there are definitely some really talented people so far this season.
I loved the two corn field sisters and was shocked that they barely scraped through into Hollywood.
I also loved the handsome Frank Sinatra crooner. Again I was shocked that Simon had to convince the other two to let him through. Their lame excuse was that they were afraid he wouldn't be versatile. Which brings up my pet peeve about American Idol. STOP trying to find a singer who does every style passably well and concentrate on finding a singer who does his or her own style brilliantly. Let the public decide who we think is talented and excels in the style they choose. As I've said before, the stars we really like are not versatile --- they're unique. American Idol should just let them be themselves.
Lash, I too was really happy that the little cowboy got through. What an innocent! He's going to have everyone rooting for him. I just bet he pulls it off.
I did notice Paula getting wet everytime a really handsome young man came in. Wow, is she ever a predator!
Looking forward to next week.

SEMI!!! Long time, no see! Glad you're here!
I was thumbing through PEOPLE magazine at work, and there's a brief article with Paula.
She apparently has an album coming out sometime this year.
She also states that America will fall in love with A.I. contestant ACE. I recall him from the auditions, I remember thinking he was cute.

Will I have a Nadia for this season?

On my iTunes top 25 most played songs, I've listened to "Angels Brought Me Here" by Guy Sebastian over 65 times. Next is Vonzell's solo performance of "When You Tell Me That You Love Me." Kelly and Bo each have two songs after that, then I go into other purchased songs. I suppose because AI performances are shorter than whole songs, it's easier to listen to them multiple times.

Everyone I know in RL is buzzing about the Seattle Seahawks going to the Superbowl. I'm excited about this too, but I have to admit that I was also delighted to find that Miss Carrie Underwood sang the National Anthem at the game! She sounded great.

Any chance this thread could be highlighted now that the season is starting up again? If I'm on a rant, I don't want to dissipate my energy looking for the thread.

Well, I was excited about two who passed through tonight-- the chick who sang "In the Still of the Night" (she had an edge I loved) and li'l Paris, who sang "Cowboy Take Me Away". I may have found my Nadia for this year. I mean, honestly... did anyone watching expect that lass to bust out the Dixie Chicks? She gave me chills. If she makes it to the top 12, I hope she sings it for Country night.

I liked 4 singers last night. The one guy was the country and western type guy -charming and goodlooking. The first girl was that blonde whose mother left her and whose daddy was in jail. I hated her song (sorry but I turn the radio off when I hear that screechy Kelly Clarkson song), but I liked her and think her voice might be alright with the right type of music. Next I liked the single mother who had lived in 42 foster homes. (Can you se a pattern here? I'm a sucker for the potential rags to riches story line).
Last, and so far my best for American Idol was the young girl whose grandmother was Ann Nesbit (or something like that). I don't remember what the first song was, but they asked to to "grace" them with another and she sang a Billie Holiday number (Probably better than Holiday ever sang it, too). When that girl sang, I just closed my eyes and thought "This girl doesn't need American Idol. She's probably too good for it. I'd run out and buy her record today." If she's as good as her audition suggested, she's got the contest in the bag.
Notice that I can't remember names.

I liked Paris last night. So far everyone else has been kinda "meh". Is it just me or is AI more mean-spirited this year? I know it makes for good TV, but some of those poor kids should never have gotten that far, just to be made fun of. I guess I'm just over the whole 'bad audition' episodes. I'm ready for the REAL contest to begin.

Semi, the girl you liked so much was Paris, and her first song was "Cowboy Take Me Away" by Dixie Chicks, as I mentioned above. She was awesome.
I still like the audition episodes; I like to spot potential favorites this early. I'd prefer more of the good to the bad, though, and feel that pandering to foul-mouthed trash like that Rhonetta girl last night is a bad move.
As for tonight... not really super-blown away by anyone in particular. I kinda wanted that big, blonde-haired Cher-sounding chick to pass through, but it was 1 yes to 2 nos.

I so agree with you, Lash. I'm tired of seeing the embarassing singers and the nasty comments of the judges. I want to celebrate the good singers. Rock Star INXS last summer was virtually all positive and it was a freakin' awesome show (I don't actually talk like that. ) ) America will still watch American Idol without the sordidness. I found the following link which has videos of Paris' audition as well as several others. Enjoy.

What WAS Simon's problem? Were all those contract negotiations going on while the auditions were taking place? He was SO somewhere else, then he walked off. Whatever. Still, it's good tv.
The thing that's fun about this part of the show is that my son gets such a big kick out of the bad performers, and I suppose a lot of people do. I guess you never know if another William Hung might show up. In fact, I think more of these auditioners are going for the Hung effect more than the actual Idol.
Thanks for that link, Semi. I've been to that site in the past, but forgot about it. Paris was adorable, but I fear Fantasia comparisons will abound. Oh well, if she does well, that'll melt away.
I liked Sway. Not super original, but good. The other young girl, whose mom is her voice coach was great, too. Seems like a lot of young ones are coming out to the auditions. It's like even more kids are learning to sing so they can try out for this show. I wonder if there are any statistics that could verify that?

Last night was a lacklustre show. They really only showed a couple of singers who got through to Hollywood and concentrated on bad performances. There's a real mean spiritedness to the show this year that I don't care for.
Did you all catch that picture of Nadia Turner that was flashed. I so wish she'd come out with an album.
