Did you all see the preview of the next issue kung-fu tournament?! Looks super exciting.
One small knock. Danny is written too much like a neophyte.

I especially don't want to miss out on Dan Brereton's work... the cover looks amazing!

Immortal Iron Fist #9: -- Am I the only one who thinks this story is more than a tad beholden to "Enter the Dragon"? Certainly not a bad thing since it's different enough. I actually love the parallels. -- I like how they've given us a real story beyond the tournamment. I wasn't expecting Danny to lose in the first round, but of course there's the "battle royale of losers" later... -- I like the continued exploration of Danny's newfound abilities. Healing is a good one, but if he had focused his chi on some "diamond hard skin", he wouldn't need it as much (if shao lin monks can do it...) -- I hope the hard cover sold well -- I know Marvel focuses on it when considering the future of a title. I think this might be my current favorite Marvel title (in no small part due to the fact that it's far removed from "Civil War" fallout and Iron Man's 50 states initiative)

This title continues to rock. I didn't get the Enter the Dragon parallel. Mostly cause the "tournament" stuff has been done so much I forgot where it started. I still enjoy it. The suprise was the results of the tournament so far. Didn't see that coming. I have no problems with Iron Fist channeling his chi to do many more things but I hope they don't take it to far. Great series! Love the annual as well. Real pulpy.

Regarding "Enter the Dragon", there was also the fact that one of the servant girls was really a secret agent who aids Bruce Lee in his agenda outside the tournament. The scene where Orson's daughter helps Danny sneak out reminded me of that aspect of the movie.
Regarding the Annual, it was indeed extra pulpy. I love the inclusion of the "Confederates of the Curious" (the alliteration is nice, though I don't know about that name). I expect to see more about them in the future. Iron Fist totally fits with that milieu - whereas Danny was created during the 70's kung fu fad, Orson's adventures touches upon the same western fascination for the orient that birthed tales of Shangri-la, the inspiration for K'un L'un.

Drake, I haven't seen Enter the Dragon since about 1984. Good call. Some people call it stereotypical but I love the pulp stuff with the eastern mysterious mysticism stuff. Love it.

My CBS convinced me to try this series (started with #8 and worked backwards) and I've enjoyed it. The fight scenes are less interesting to me, but there's a lot of story going on. I like hero quest tales and there are lots of them here, operating on different levels. It is a bit pulpy but that's a large part of the charm for me too.
I've gotten curious about the Heroes for Hire gang as well, after seeing them in Iron Fist.

How's this book going? I'm watching DCBS for the next trade... hopefully another HC to go with the first one.
Have there been any more stand-alone stories like the female IF and Randall annual story? Again, I'm not sure how those will fit into the trades...

The stand-alones should be included right along the trades. They might depart from the main plotline, but are fully integrated into the main intent of the title - to flesh out the long history and legacy that is the Iron Fist.

That's what I would do as well.
To answer Pov's question, the book is still one of the best things Marvel puts out right now.
(Yeah, I know: Faint praise and all that....)

I don't know about the faint praise comment, Miner. Marvel stunk up the place with "Civil War" and the overblown X-titles, but they're putting out some quality titles. "Iron Fist" is my favorite, but "Captain America", "Daredevil" and to a lesser degree "Thor" and "Nova" are quality reads.
And while it's smack dab in the middle of the "Civil War" fallout, the main "Iron Man" title is actually pretty good (I mean, where else can you get Captain Ultra goodness?)

THE PRINCE OF ORPHANS ROCKS!!!!!!!!
Tell me the guy wasn't a bad @$$ here! He called out Davos! Beat him bad! Taught him a lesson. And I won't ruin the ending.
The revolution is what I am talking about! Never liked that cobra commander hooded guy anyways!

btw, i've been reading around and the Prince of Orphans is a homage to DC's Amazing Man. He has the same Green Mist powers and they plan to give him a similiar origin.

DCBS finally has the 2nd HC up for preorders... and I almost MISSED it! Thanks to BeaucoupKevin for mentioning it was available in the March Previews on his blog. I went back and found it on the DCBS site, and sent them an e-mail to add it to my March order.

I just got caught up on Immortal Iron Fist with the second HC and 15-17. And you know what? This may be the single very best title Marvel is currently putting out, possibly better than any of DC's stuff as well! One thing I absolutely love about it is that so far, Marvel's allowing the title to be self-contained, no crossovers or suped-up hype. I love the sense of history the title has to it. I love the mysticsm. I love the martial arts. I loooove the characters! And you know what else? Having read #17 with the new creative team, I don't think it's gonna miss a beat! Unknown talents Duane Swierczynski and Travel Foreman are very wisely building on the storylines and narrative flow that superstars Brubaker, Fraction and Aja established instead of tearing it down as so many others have. Example: the flashbacks to previous Iron Fists are apparently here to stay! So if you've never tried this excellent comic or dropped it because Brubaker and Fraction left sight unseen--SHAME ON YOU!!! (Cobester, I'm lookin' at you since this title's never appeared on your pull-list! ) So pick up the first trade, at least. And if ya like what you saw here, I GUARANT-DAMN-TEE ya, you'll like everything that comes after!! (An' if the new creative team jumps the shark, I'll tell ya!)
Still "Lardy" to my friends!
