Looks good.

It's clear from the dialogue that they've updated things to the present day. Just as well. Cooke, as talented as he is, isn't going to be able to avoid the Eisner comparisons.

I'm looking forward to this one.

I don't think anyone's expecting him to be Eisner. At least I hope they're not.

I just last week picked up DC's Best-Of-the-Spirit collection. Pretty neat stuff. Surprising how little of it was actually about the Spirit.

It's all 8-page stories from between '40 and '50. I don't recall them all but I found this link which lists some of them.

I agree. This was a really fun read. I love Cooke's sensibility in both art and storytelling.

I also love that he included an obviously villainous Selina Kyle in her modern costume.

I also like the playful way the Spirit masthead splash page was worked into the story.

Dopey old guys fooled by bad girls being bad and saved by a coupla tough guys.

What's not to like?

I'm going to predict that this title may soon rival All-Star Superman as the best title DC is producing.

This was fun.

Considering they stuffed so many characters into this thing, it didn't seem like anybody got short shrift.

Bring on the Spirit monthly.

I thought the series is off to a great start.

The one thing I'm still not sure about the inclusion of Ebony. So instead of a 1940s stereotype of a black male are we going to degenerate into a 2006 stereotype of a black male? I hope not.

Aside from that I'm ready for more. Bring on P'Gell.

I think Ebony's going to be a tricky balancing act.

It'll definitely be interesting to see how he works.

This was a revelation! I loved every square inch of it. And I've never read the Spirit before (I know, it's a sin).

The 2-page title splash was one of the most stunning pieces of comic art I have seen in a long time. I want it for my wall (Son, fire up the scanner!)

Cooke's design and storytelling is superlative. I had such fun reading the intentionally inane ticker-tape news crawl (not that different from the inadvertantly inane real ones). I loved that Cooke dealt directly with Ebony and his relationship with the Spirit.

Cooke has my vote for best talent in the business right now. His work is old-fashioned, but not out of date or anachronistic, if that makes any sense. A decently careful reading of the book let's you know everything you need to know about the main character, his relationships and his environment. With virtually no exposition, to boot. Superb!

...but you don't have a moment where you're sitting there staring at a table full of twenty-five characters with little name signs that say, "Hi, my superpower is confusing you!"

I'm still so behind...

Picked up Batman/Spirit and LOVED it! Cooke reminded me why he's my #1 fave creator in comics right now. Can'tw ait for the first issue or two, and more of Cooke drawn P'Gell!

Anal-retentive continuity question. Since the original Spirit was set in Central City, and Spirit is now (?) in the DCU, is it the same as Flash's Central City?

I remember saying that aside of the Batman/Spirit crossover (which was really just to try to hook some batfans on the concept) that the Spirit would be outside the DCU.

Thanks. What might be cool is if the Spirit is one of the comic books read in the DCU, given how iconic the Spirit is to the "real world" of comics.

Wow! This book is definitely the clear rival to ASSM as the best book being produced at DC right now!

And Darwyn Cooke is definitely rocketing to the list of my top favorite comic writers!

#3 is utterly fantastic! I expected it to be awesome, but I didn't expect it to be so heart-wrenching. P'Gell is awesome!

Any Eisnerites here to answer my question? Did P'Gell ever have her origin as a vamp told by Eisner?

I loved this issue. Some nice domestic moments with Denny and Chief Dolan's daughter too. The Spirit always seems to slip away and get into an adventure with some beautiful woman. She can't like that too much.

Er... I meant #2 of course, though I'm sure #3 will be awesome as well!

Anyway, I'm wondering if Hussein Hussein will be an ongoing character, maybe with a mystery as to who he *really* is.

After reading this issue, I'd like to get that "All About P'Gell" book. What a character! She went from sob story to self-preservation with such alacrity, I wonder if that was the real story.

As groovy as Cooke's take on P'Gell is, I'm really looking forward to his version of Silk Satin!

Finally got the issue. Another gem. Cooke's ability to tell a corker of a story, with gorgeous art, without feeling cramped or rushed, he's so talented. I love the little snippets about the Spirit's life. Since he's a new character to me, every issue is a little revelation. Despite the modern-day setting, this issue had the feel of a great early 1960s pot-boiler -- stylish, swanky, sexy, dramatic.
