I dunno how she's supposed to actually look, Stuey-- but iirc from the Power of Shazam days she still looks relatively young in Mary Marvel mode! I thought Kevin did a stellar job in capturing a look of "age difference" between Mary and Bea without going overboard.
Glad you like this series, Stuey-- see what you missed out on back in the 80s? Hit those back-issue bins!

I got the Justice League: A New Beginning TPB a little while back and I'm reading through it now...! I'm enjoying the '80s stories, but I've gotta say I love the way the artwork has really grown... everything about FKATJL is fantastic...

Kevin's come a long way without losing what makes his art HIS.
I love his work!

I think Maguire's great with comedy and facial features, but his action is a bit lacking for me. Maybe he'd do different stuff if this were an all-out action title, but while I like his tight style, he seems a little too tight for me sometimes.

We agree re: Kevin's weaknesses. He only lasted 3 issues on the action heavy TEAM TITANS series and his work there was much-ballyhooed and hyped before the series launched, only to be merely "okay". He also never finished an action-oriented CAPTAIN AMERICA mini for Marvel (someone else had to step in to finish it).
I think it was VERY smart of him to return to FKAJL. Giffen too. I'd go so far as to say they have both probably saved their comics careers with this move.

One of my favorite Maguire works was STRIKEBACK!, originally one of Malibu's BRAVURA titles and finished with a new fifth issue by IMAGE. It had the right mix of Kevin's wonderful character work and wacky action. If you guys can track down the full IMAGE run (possibly it was collected in a TPB, i dunno)-- DO it! Lashie, especially-- I KNOW you'd appreciate the book's zaniness.

Thanks Povvins-- as you know, I trust your taste in zaniness/wackiness and will track the books down!

A little clue: The protagonist's power involves his red n' white scarf, which he can manipulate for all sorts of uses!

I just got #3 today and I'm going to be reading it VERY soon. From the quick preview I got while waiting to pay for it at the store, I think I'm gonna like this one as much as the previous two issues.
I wish this series would NEVER end!

********SPOILERS FOR #3************
I've been enjoying this series well enough -- it's clever, but not quite laugh out loud funny for me (as the old series was). I enjoyed the banter and Roulette's assistant and his obsession with Mary Marvel.
The Superbuddies thing was great.
I wonder if it's going to turn out Beetle's heart condition thing is actually in his head or something.
Clever to use Roulette's mind-altering mojo to give the book's light tone an actual reason.
Mary Marvel kicking the holey bejeezus out of Capt Atom was a strong visual (although Cap has BLUE boots, gosh darnit!)

#3 was great (best read this week, better than JLA/Avengers, although I seem to have missed picking up Endless Nights for no apparent reason). The Superbuddies ad was just fantastic ('she's not quite Supergirl' and 'Your favourite hetero supehero couple'. Paraphrasing, but still he he he) and the scenes with the heroes not being stressed by the capture were just fabulous. Loved Beetle's comment amount 'the guy in the armour' having a heart condition. heh. And I have to say I love, *love* Kevin Maguire. He just draws the best facial expressions (that's my main bug with Perez, he only has three expressions that he uses over and over) and has deceptivly real people. What I mean by that is that on first look his art is very simple, almost cartoony. Except it's not. He draws some of the most anatomically correct comic characters I've ever seen without them looking stiff or posed. He draws great body language and really nice details (although I think he has someone else helping on the backgrounds. Not sure about that but I seem to remember someone, possibly the inker, being credited for background fills). And he also draws incredibly sexy men. Especially their arses. The page with Bettele and Booster when they're first in Roulette's holding cell has some of the best comic book bums I've ever seen. *So* glad they've already comissioned a second mini from this lot.

I was lucky to even get #3. My shop ordered 82 copies but was only shipped 12. The guy running the store had them hidden in a drawer and was only offering them to people who asked about the issue. Or cool folks like myself.

Endless Nights is OUT ??? The hell? As for FKAJL... haven't seen anything yet that approaches "One Punch! One Punch," "Butts Out Of Bialya," or "This is what I get for working with my wife." I'll let you all know when I experience a REAL BWAH-HA-HA-HA with this series.
White. A blank page or canvas. His favorite. So... many... possibilities.

It's the Endless Nights "special," I think -- just a brief excerpt of what's actually going to be in the real deal. It's a very tantalizing preview, though -- beautiful art, and a nice summary of the Endless for newbies.

DEEEE-lish! You would have liked his work on Penthouse Comics, then. I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S NOT THE JUSTICE LEAGUE!

Finally read issue # 3 last night-- thoroughly enjoyed it and am SOOOOO sad to know the series is half over already. *choke!*
Anyone got any sales stats on the first 3 issues? I'm pretty sure it's a hit, but would like to see actual rankings.
As for issue 3, it wasn't as side-splitting for me as issue 2 (the funniest of the series thus far) or issue 1 (which had some excellent, funny moments) but itwas fantastic!
I was quite taken aback by how easily Mary handed Capt. Atom his head!
Maguire is indeed incredible with the facial expressions and sexy characters, but he HAS been since way back in JL 1.
Fire's haircut even looked better this issue....
any word on when the second mini will ship?

Lots of Captain Atom fans were up in arms over that on the DC boards! Being a Mary Marvel fan, though, *I* had no problem with it.

Matthew-- WOW! A *DC* miniseries debuts in the top 40 comics? NOT BAD! Any stats on issues 2 & 3 yet?
Stu-- I know the Marvels are incredibly powerful, but seeing MARY lay such a heavy smackdown on Capt. Atom...!!! Well, it was a shock. I'm not MAD about it or anything.... just still surprised.... almost like if Hoppy the Marvel Bunny bit a chunk out of Krypto's ass or something.... ;-D

I think I read somewhere that issues #2 and #3 did pretty well too... maybe on the FKATJL forum on the DC boards?
Yeah, it was pretty shocking to see Mary pouding Captain Atom's face like that... and then to see him lying there with cracks on his face and his limbs all askew. I guess Roulette's point at the end was pretty well taken...!

At the convention in Las Vegas this weekend DC announced that it will be collecting the mini into a trade. No word on when it will be published or if it will contain any additional material.
