The Giant-Size is a treat. I didn't follow HOUSE OF M, but the lead story doesn't really require you to. You get it that House of M was an alternate reality deal, where Ms. Marvel was a superstar. Back in the Marvel-U proper, though, she... isn't.
But she ends the tale determined to BE that superstar. Go for it, baby!
I've seen Ms. Marvel raped, depowered, changed into a grody red thing, and made an alcoholic.
Now I'm ready to see her kick frickin' ass. I think defeating your foe by throwing a cat at them is a step in the right direction!
And that Cockrum costume-- the man was a design genius.
The reprints are shaping up to be a lot of fun, too-- I had all these original issues (except Captain Marvel # 18), but sold them a while ago. Nice to have some of 'em back.
The other reprints are MS. MARVEL 1, 2 & 20 (COCKRUM!!).
I've only read the # 1 reprint so far, and it's a hoot-- there's a word balloon of J. Jonah Jameson saying CHOKE! It isn't even presented as a sound effect, but as if he's saying the word "choke".
Looking forward to the ongoing next month.

Ms. Marvel was Marvel's whipping girl for FAR too long and deserved way better. Binary was a step up from the rape/depower/Rogue crapfast, but it still wasn't Ms. Marvel to me.
I've got really high hopes for this series.

Although I'm slightly less familar with Ms. Marvel than you guys, I feel the same way. Gone are the days of using her as a poster-child for tragedy-equals-characterization, and I'm hoping she has a great run. I didn't pick up the 80-pager, but will pick up #1.
Now if only they could do the same for Hank Pym!

B-- but if you pass on the giant, you'll miss seeing Carol throw a cat!
Plus, the usage of the phrase "beardless youth" in the Captain Marvel # 18 reprint!

His dad and uncle probably own the originals. Why pay $5 for an 8-page recap of "Carol in House of Meh" if you don't need the rest?

Welllll...I picked up maybe 2/3 of the Ms. Marvel series in 1984 or so. Cheap bin, dontcha know. Too bad it WASN'T bad, because then it might have been funny or memorable for me. Instead, it was just kinda there. I've since given my set away, first appearance of Mystique be hanged.
I liked Carol when she appeared in X-men. Brood Saga! One of my favorites! And the end of the classic Avengers Annual 10: WHOA.

Now Povvins, to be fair, the new story is 16 pages, not 8!
And I did mention that juicy Dave Cockrum art in the # 20 reprint, right?
But if the cat-hurling didn't sell ya, I can't imagine what else I can say about it that will!

Are she and Jessica Drew still gal-pals in regard to the climax in AVENGERS ANNUAL 10?

MS . MARVEL #1
I like the new motivation Carol Danver is adopting. It makes an interesting underpinning to whatever future plots there are ahead. Her conversation with Jessica Drew was fun-- made the issue, actually. Though it was fun to see Stilt-man, who's still as goofy as all get-out.

Interesting that we get the Brood right away. You'd think they'd want to avoid dealing with the whole Binary thing this early on the series. Having fond memories of that story, I'm psyched to see what comes of it.

How did Carol lose her Binary powers? And secondly, isn't her costumed identity now called Warhawk (according to her run in the Busiek/Perez/Vey AVENGERS)?

It had been "Warbird", but that wasn't very popular with people.

I loved # 1!
I thought it was a great mixture of humour, talking heads and action!
No cat-hurling though. But Stilt-Man made up for that...

I'm actually tempted to get this. The only comics I've read with her were the X-Men issues she appeared in. And she was great! She so deserves this.

Hey, I checked out #1 and I liked it. I was a little disappointed that I didn't see the cat-hurling. Wrong #1, whoops.

Because the story that contains the cat-hurling in the Giant-Size MM happens in the 'House of M' reality, I am hoping that kitty will return in the regular series Marvel-U proper.
The villain she throws it at IS slated to appear soon. Can the cat be far behind?
Carol was distraught in GSMM when the villain vanished with the cat attached to his face... she lamented the disappearance of her new "sidekick"...
All of that mustbe leading up to something...

How did I miss THIS? (I was sick as a dog, that's how {sigh}) Is this "Giant-Size 'Ms. Marvel'" NEW material? And is that the formal name of it, so I can search for it? And when did it come out? I thought Carol Danvers went from kick-ass great in her original Ms. M look to stomp-ass greater in that perfect Cockrum outfit. (That blood-red SASH! How it drapes off her right hip and ... {sigh}) She got worked over much as "my sister" did by the creative powers that be, and that was hard to witness (again), and I kept few of those appearances. But I assembled the whole original series via eBay over about a year, several years back, so I don't need the reprints. Still, I've gotta get that Giant-Size! Ah, and here you can find a superlative everything-Carol site.

Hey, wait a minute! Is this the start of a new "Ms. Marvel" SERIES ????? And are all of them Giant-Size, or only the first one, or is that a special preceding the series? ... I have GOT to read more of the comics news. My favorite view of her, given a new celestial background by another fan ...

The GIANT SIZE came first, has an all-new prequel story that sets up Carol's goals for the new series, plus some bitchen reprints (see elsewhere in the thread for more details, the first post date of this thread will tell you about when it was released).
And # 1 (regular-size ongoing) came out recently and has been well-received as evidenced by the recent posts here.
So Don't wait-- fly out and get it!

I flew! They're excellent!
Whoever drew the cover of the Giant-Size, with her circling the Empire State Building, has made a new classic depiction for her. And the new story was intriguing and easily followed, even for this non-"House of M" reader.
(The reprints from the '60s and '70s are nicely colored, but I still prefer the originals. The smell of newsprint *ahhh*)
And the new series? With her commenting on having "grown up" and no longer needing a plane to fly? Trying to call Captain America on her cell at Mach 3? I like its style already!
