PAD-- FALLEN ANGEL @ IDW a success Great to hear. I loved the first issue; I just have to remember it on my DCBS orders! It was easier to find when it was a DC title... I'll have to pick up #'s 2 and 3 at the CBS when they come out.

I may have ordered an extra of those issues Pov. I'll have to check. Haven't read issue #1 yet but I sat down and read the first series in one sitting. If it continues along those lines I'll love it.

Very much so, Scooter. After I got over the sheer beauty of the artwork, I slipped back into PAD's story like an well-worn pair of shoes. We see instant ramifications to some of the cliffhangers from toward the end of the DC series-- Juris figures prominently .

I was really worried because it wasn't in my pull box last week but I saw loads of reviews of it so I thought maybe I'd missed it, but then when I went to the shop yesterday there it was. Yay! It came out a week late here for some reason, but it was certainly worth teh wait. The art is stunning, the paper quality is fantastic and the story is as good as the DC stories. Also the fact that it's been confirmed as an on-going is just fantastic. Interesting that PAD has decided to give Lee a very definate origin that is comepletly separate from his Supergirl stories and creating a very final break from his DC work. I think that's probably a good thing (although I did like the idea that maybe Fallen Angel was actually Supergirl). I was also really wary at first of such a big jump in time between the two series but in fact it seems like quite a good idea in practice. Some interesting new characters but most of the old ones returning as well. I'm a very happy bunny with this first issue and just hope it goes from strength to stength.

Have you gotten #2 over there yet, Bevis? S - P - O - I - L - E - R - S, maybe. I have to say, I'm liking this book alot more now that we're getting the FA's backstory. Lots of familiar faces mixing in with the new ones, to the benefit of the story. The transition from Jude's opening reverie to his ride alongside Slate was at once foreboding and amusing. And PAD doesn't waste any time following up on Juris' realization in the first issue, as evidenced by the cover. His confrontation with Lee is well done, with some more insights into Lee's past and a well-timed return for Mariah. And the last page-- Jude and Juris, face to face. I can't wait until #3 comes out!

Interesting. PAD has signed an exclusive with Marvel, but his work with IDW is unaffected. Cool little article from CBR.

issue #2 was another great issue except for one GLARING editing mistake
S P O I L E R
S P A C E
THE FRIGGIN AX GOT BROKEN BY MIRAH! Then a few pages later it is back in one piece.
Did i miss a second ax? Does the ax have mutant healing powers?
Its such a huge thing you would think the artist would catch it.

No, I noticed that fubar with the axe as well. I suppose it could have been a case of the later pages were painted before the earlier ones (if you see what I mean) and the script changed and everyone forgot to change it. Still, a silly mistake not to catch.
I am *loving* the enw series. i was seceptical about how well a twenty year gap would work, but it's working brilliantly so far. I love the back story for Lee and the way that her life is spiralling out of control right now. It's going to be particularly interesting to see how she reacts when she finds out that jude is back in town as well. Plus, what exactly are Mariah and Malachi up to? He's clearly not the good angel that he's claiming to be but quite what his interest is and what his motives are are still a mystery, which I like a lot.
Oh, and the art is stunning. I just hope that it can be kept up to that level.

I finally got around to sampling this book. I bought FA IDW # 2 off the rack, and a back issue of FA IDW # 1. I looked for the FA DC TPB, but no such luck. They do have some FA DC back issues, though, and I'll get some of them the next time I'm at the comic shop...
...because I think this book really is every bit as great as I'd heard. And I definitely will spread the word.
The morally ambigious protagonist, the mixture of film noir and supernatural intrigue, and, in particular, the city that doesn't quite exist within reality as we know it, all remind me of the great 80s comic GrimJack, of which I have all the stories (including the Starslayer backups) up through issue # 21. Lee herself reminds me a bit of one of my favorite GJ characters, Spook. All of which makes it fitting that the GrimJack TPBs and the recent GrimJack mini Killer Instict (which I haven't read yet) are all being released by IDW.

No love for Fallen Angel of late so I thought I'd resurrect this thread.
So we're onto #8 of the IDW series now and I have to say it's just gotten better and better to my mind. The art is friggin' gorgeous and I think the recent issues with the less painted look are equally as good, if not even better, than the fully painted stuff. Woodward just has a lovely way of showing emotion and intent in people's faces and body language that's very understated but works beautifully. He's also really defined Bette Noir in terms of it's look. He;s not changed any of the stuff that Lopez established or drastically altered they style of it or anything but he's taken it a few steps further on and made it into a fully rounded world.
And as ever PAD doesn't disappoint in the writing stakes. Lee's origin story from the last few issues was great. It cuts all possible ties to Supergirl and even though i don't think you needed to know her origin it doesn't take anythign away either. Her rage and grief at the way she was treated makes it so understandable as to why she is the way she is. She's not just angry at people, she's angry at God. She's not good or bad exactly, she just is and that makes her a bit unpredicatble. Even when she doesn't appear in an issue (as with #8) she's still the point around which all the events revolve. It's very Sandman in that respect.
The rest of the cast are great too. The characters that have continued over (Black Mariah, Dolf and the rest) continue to be great even if they've not played as key roles so far but the new characters since the IDW series started are just as good.
Hopefully the sales are high enough that it can carry on as an ongoing series as long as PAD wants to write it because it's been the best monthly book I'm buying for a while now. Most of the other superhero titles (accepting that Fallen Angel isn't *quite* a superhero title) have been a bit lacklustre whereas Fallen Angel has got me excited each month. I know they said that when the book moved publishers that if it sold DC numbers at IDW then it'd be one of their highest selling titles so hopefully that's still holding true. They certainly don't seem to be referring to it as a mini any more but nor have I seen anything definate to say that it won't be cancelled at any point. I'll just have to cross my fingers and hope, extol it's virtues to as many people as I can and hope that the sales just keep going up.

The last two issues have really picked up the pace and shown that post-Juris, this book can still kick ass.
Sachs and Violens have been great, and I've generally not cared for these characters.
Jude is interesting and now I'm waiting for Malachi to get what's coming to him, as everyone in Bette Noire eventually does.
I still think this is the best stuff Peter David has *ever* done, and that's a high compliment given my high regards for his writing.

Damnit, i've only seen one of the new series. Granted, i haven't been to my store in about 2 months, but that should only be 2 issues at the most, right?

#9 rocked, as expected. Even though the twist at the end isn't really a twist since it was so obvious (unless you're a bit dim like me) it was still a brilliant issue. The art is still blowing me away and I'm really liking Sachs and Violens and ther part in the new status quo they're playing. I also loved the bit with Malachi and the way the protection works. Xia is proving to be a really interesting character too.
And Lee's return was great.
The whole issue was just a great mix of action and drama and plot and characterisation. I have to agree with Cobie that this is probably the best stuff that PAD has written, and that's coming from someone who thinks that his run on Supergirl is probably one of the best superhero comics ever.

I know, IMO it really is the best thing to say about Fallen Angel.
PAD's Hulk run, his #1-25 of Aquaman (and previous Atlantis minis) and his run on Young Justice are almost sacrosanct to me.

The colors are being done by a wonderful colorist named Ronda Pattison. I did a few tweaks and signage because I'm a control freak, but Ronda did all the heavy lifting, and she does a great job.Looking good Ronda!

I picked the latest issue up, with the Shi crossover. It's done in story, no extra title to read.
I liked it. I'm going to have to keep reading this one a little longer.
Just spouting off.

"Shi Bangs"... Lee is too funny! I liked the flip-book aspect of #17, as it was all set-up until Shi and FA meet at the end (middle?), and a good intro for readers not familiar with one character or the other. But the interaction between them, and the advancement of the story, made 18 a much stronger issue, I thought.

This book is still chugging along. I liked the focus on Jude this issue, and the story structure around the 5 classic stages of grief... resolving for Jude, but just starting for his half-brother at issue's end. Dennis's art was a nice surprise; I order FA on automatic, so stuff like his fill-in this issue and the Shi story arc aren't things that are spoilt before I get my copies. His work here is different from what I've seen from him, either his current S&LSH run or his old X-FACTOR stuff. That's not to say it's worse; He does a good job capturing the mood of Bete Noir. Some of the story-telling was a little unclear-- I wasn't sure exactly how Jude knocked Jubal's cigarette out of his mouth at the end. But Dennis, you're welcome to come back to Bete Noir whenever JK Woodward needs a rest.
