Did anyone pick this up? I couldn't resist, even though I have a copy coming in my order at the end of the month I grabbed one off the shelf tonight. Haven't finished it yet but, damn! This looks to be some classic Hex.

And I should be getting the Showcase Hex at the end of the month too. Starting to feel the love of the old West comics coming back.

I love Westerns. John Ostrander's THE KENTS 12-issue maxiseries, Marriotte and Cassaday's first DESPERADOS mini, Marriotte's second mini with the Severins... all great stuff.

This new Hex series looks to be as good as anything else I've liked in the genre. Luke Ross's artwork is beautiful-- he's really developed from his early J. Scott Campbell anime style. The story was predictable, but solid. Done in one, too.

I also picked up Azzarelo's LOVELESS-- not as strong as JONAH HEX, overall, but interesting enough for me to pick up issue #2.

Anybody else think it was clear that Ross was modeling his Hex after Clint Eastwood?

Definitely in a couple of panels. Almost like a manipulated photo. And this is so far my favorite book of the month. Haven't gotten my copy of Walking Dead yet though.

Awsome start with issue #1. The issue simply rocked.

Loveless was good. Will give it a few issues to see if it grows on me.

I picked this issue up because of this thread...very good issue. Thanks for the solid recomendation.

Issue #2 was just as good. Even though I really don't like the use of a 'caricature' for Hex's look at least they've kept it consistent and it works (makes me want to see Eastwood do a Hex movie). I'm also enjoying the self-contained stories and hope they keep up that format.

Next issue, Bat Lash!

Oh, and anyone enjoying this book really should pick up the Showcase: Jonah Hex that came out last month. Worth every penny.

Haven't read #2 but #1 was excellent. Hell, they could make a movie out of issue #1. And definately a huge Clint Eastwood resemblance (which I kinda liked).

I'll be reading this series for the long-haul.

I agree Scott - the second issue was as good as the first. I never cared much for the old west comics, but Jonah Hex is certainly exceptional enough for me to keep reading.

Um...should I be changing my handle to "Lance Rhino" or maybe to "Rhino's Realm"?

A couple of great issues to start with, and a real western feel. This isn't a book dressed in boots and hats, GrayPal and Ross have created something here.

They mentioned having a few longer arcs, but for the most part are sticking to the one issue stories.


p.s.- I'm with Lances. Did a heard of rhinos invade over the weekend?

Interview at The Pulse with Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray. And they basically promise to keep it to one story arcs with a planned three-parter down the road a bit. I really like that idea. It may also be a good way to build readership by making it easier for people to pick up.

Though the term "squaw" is frowned upon by The People... Apparently, it's a nasty slang term for a part of the female anatomy.

JONAH HEX 1&2 Sell Out @DC

#1 had an estimated run of around 34K. Pretty damn good for a Western.

Has anyone read the Showcase: Jonah Hex? I was just wondering about the quality of the early Jonah Hex stories. Is this worth getting?

I have it and have paged through it. I read Hex growing up so I know most of these stories. The Showcase is definitely a good buy if you like the old west stories.

I bought the first iss of the new series and dcided to get the showcase for quick entertainment and cuz my comic store was having a boxing day sale. I got it for 50% off 13 bucks canadian. Well worth even the regular price.

Nothing groundbreaking, if you like the western bounty hunter/gunfighter stuff you'll love it.

---Another great issue, done-in-one, guest-starring another DC Western character-- Bat Lash!

I'm not really familiar with him, but his appearance was entertaining and important to the story. The interaction between the two was great, especially the repartee that closed out the story.

The artwork was fabulous, and what happens to the Sherriff had me queasy despite its relative lack of gore.

This book is among my must-reads... LOVELESS has grown on me as well. YEEEEEEHAW!

I don't recall my copy being in my mid-month shipment. Maybe I better check it again.

I take it you are familiar with Maverick? Same idea. At least that's how I always thought of him.

Now all of these great Westerns and characters makes me want to see the original Wild, Wild, West.

I remember in the pre-CRISIS days how the Justice League actually teamed up with Jonah Hex, Cinnamon and other West-based DC heroes...

Issue #5 has a guest penciller, Tony Dezuniga, who did a bunch of Jonah Hex books back in the day. Just been reading thru the Showcase this past week and really enjoying it.

And Hex is making an appearance in Justice League Unlimited #19, along with Bat Lash and El Diablo. I may pick this one up.

Issue #4 was another solid, excellent issue. The art is simply phenominal and the writing is tight and enjoyable.

The done in one format makes this title a combination of classic western comics, Clint Eastwood movies and bad-ass, realistic 'modern' story-telling (I, of course, use the word 'modern' with tongue planted firmly in cheek). This should be on everyone's pull-list.

On a sidenote--also out right now is Joe Kubert's SGT. Rock mini-series, which is equally as excellent. DC publishing these two series makes me feel pretty damn good about DC.

Cobie, I really think DC is trying to diversy it's line. HEX and ROCK are great additions, and with the revised AQUAMAN and WARLORD (tho' not sure how its doing), they are currently beating Marvel at this game.

GrayPal are writing real westerns here, not super-heroes set in the past. I like the single issue stories. But they are making me anxious for the occasional 2-parter, just to see them give Hex some real meat.
