(Although, I hate seeing someone lose a book they like).

Suffering Sasquatch!!

I couldn't get on to LW a bit ago and visited some of the DC boards, including FIRESTORM-- oh, DEAR!

Chriscross is being raked over the coals for the article reprinted in SoM's post above.

Even an apology post reprinted there is earning him a virtual flogging of Thoralike proportions!

I kind of feel bad for the guy; this is really going to hurt his standing in the industry.

I wonder what I would be like if I were a comic book creator. To be honest, I bet I'd avoid the internet almost all the time, and then only show up to chat with fans about things that did not have to do with my stories.

Um, I really don't care much at all for Chris Cross's art. When he says he is better than much of the industry, I just don't see it. It's certainly not terrible, but it isn't among the best I've ever seen. I remember seeing one of his JLA fill-ins and it was absolutely hideous. This guy is way too full of himself.

Getting a glimpse of his personality through the above article, I really get the feeling that we're only getting part of the story. He seems way to arrogant to allow any details that would put him in a bad light. Ugh, good riddance.

The only reason I tried Firestorm out was because it was set in Detroit. Poor Detroit. It has enough of an image problem in the real world. Now it has to be identified with yet another failed attempt at a "reimagining". First JLDetroit. Now Firestorm-Detroit. *Sigh* Maybe we'll get a real hero to fly our skies some day.

Important point you missed, Lash. Firestorm doesn't kill everyone he merges with, only the ones who have been merged for extended periods of time. The first drug dealer he merged with escaped with no problems except memory loss.

I don't think I'll be getting this series any more. The story is just way too thin. I paid $7.50 to find out next to nothing about Jason. His mom left him, his dad lost an arm and beats him, and he wants to go to college. Oh, yeah, and he'a Firestorm now. For some reason. No idea why. Sorry, but you got to give me more for my money than that if you want a reader.

I have a feeling this series is going to tank hard very soon. With their star artist leaving and a really subpar opening arc, I just don't see this series as being something people will want to read. I hope DC doesn't take it as an indication that people don't want to read Firestorm period.

(56) FIRESTORM
05/ 2004: Firestorm #1 -- 46,292 -- [47,963]
06/ 2004: Firestorm #2 -- 35,398 (-23.5%)

It was an encouraging debut for FIRESTORM, but the second-issue drop-off could be much better. Adding penciler Chris Cross' quick exit to the equation, prospects aren't all that rosy.
Oh dear...

I have to say that after 4 issues and $10, I am thoroughly unimpressed with this book. The art is okay and I know Cris is leaving, but I just don't care about any of the characters or the story to be impressed by the artwork...

Ronnie! Where are you when we need you? frown

I'm sorry, but I just got done reading what CrissCross had to say... Did any of you honestly see his work as the selling point for this title?

I bought CAPTAIN MARVEL because Peter David was writing it, and the art not sucking was a bonus. I skipped Firestorm because it's not Ronny Raymond and neither creator could convince me to pick it up.

Just my two cents.

Oh, I don't like his work either (hell, I only started getting CMarv after Cross was gone, and I'm not buying Firestorm on the basis that it is completely uninteresting to me). Point is tho, he does have his fans. And FS was marginal to start with.

5 issues in, and I'm still not convinced I want to continue with the new FIRESTORM book. I mean, I don't DISlike it, but I also don't feel this incredible NEED for it either.

Former LEGION artist Chris Batista is drawing issue 6, and issue 6 will reveal the fate of Ronnie Raymond and is an IDENTITY CRISIS tie-in. So I'm going to let how I feel after issue 6 decide whether or not I continue with FIRESTORM.

Doubtful that he's the killer, Cobie... but based on the cover for # 6, your other suggestion seems VERY likely...

I hope it's all been faked, but I'm doubtful.

What was the point of reviving the title "Firestorm" without actually using the character? DC logic at it's finest.

So I suprised myself a little by buying the FIRESTORM trade today--

it collects the original series (all 5 issues, LOL!) plus # 6 from CANCELLED COMICS CAVALCADE (a major draw for me) along with the backups that followed in THE FLASH (Perez art!).

70s DC holds a major space in my heart, and although FIRESTORM wasn't up there with Teen Titans, Secret Society of Super-Villains, Freedom Fighters etc, it was published around the time of those series and therefore I found this difficult to resist.

Plus it was 20% off and I hope high sales make DC realize they should also get around to that Groovy 70s Teen Titans trade one of these days...

When I was a very little kid (age 7?) my favorite heroes were Firestorm and Flash because of their costumes. I used to go through my Dad's collection issue by issue and look at the covers. Firestorm has always remained among my favorites ever since.

His original 5-issue run and then longer 100 issue run had many great moments throughout!

I've always had a certain fondness for Firestorm, who seemed like the hip, young super-hero of the JLA/Super Friends when I was a kid! I may just have to order a copy of this!

Firestorm has always seemed to me, to be the last of the DC "Iconic" superheroes. I'm glad his earliest adventures are finally getting reprinted!

I liked Firestorm when he first came out for the same reason I liked Nova and Spider-Man, at the other company. He had a life (or, at least, was *trying* to have a life!) and didn't have a mansion to go home to.

I liked that sort of 'everyman hero' vibe, trying to juggle the school and the work and the family with 'doing good.'

Althoough, these days, I'd much rather see more of his not-really-girlfriend, Firehawk, who had a far more striking visual.

I'm shallow that way. smile

Eh, I should have remembered that FIRESTORM wasn't one of my childhood standout faves for a reason.

There's a definite "Spider-Man" vibe in the way new villains are intro'd every issue... we meet Multiplex, Killer Frost and Hyena in these first issues... but they just aren't very GOOD stories, to me.

And the Perez-drawn backups just didn't hold my interest much.

There's very little in the way of whatever quality books like Teen Titans, All-Star, Freedom Fighters and SSoSV possessed that made me never forget them.

Hmm... I read the Firestorm trade and enjoyed it quite a bit.

Among other things, I liked the inversion of stereotypes by having the hero as the average kid/jock who gets bullied by the obnoxious brainy kid.
