Yes! I got the all Grell issue today. It is officially my favorite comic book purchase of the year. It felt exactly liking reading an issue of the original run. Nice nostalgia feel, but amazingly, it didn't feel dated. Neither does the original run. These are kind of timeless tales. Grell uses pictures to tell the story much more than words. It's a style that works for him better than for any other artist I can think of. And dare I say it? Grell's Travis Morgan is as refreshingly homoerotic as ever. Mainstream comics needs more of this.

This is actually one of the few comics written and drawn by Grell I own.
I have that Legion collection, 1000 years or something in the future, and a really old issue from the first Warlord series, and Batman: Masque, but that's it.

I just got WARLORD 5-7 today... Jerry's review of the all-Grell # 7 has me really excited.

Have read up to #6 and Warlord remains the surprise pleasure read of the year. Its fun, dynamic, well-paced and has interesting plotlines and characters who are sexy as all hell. Anyone not buying this comic is obviously a sub-human, unable to rise to our level of excellence in comic purchasing!

I just read Warlord #9 which is the third issue of Grell's taking on the art chores. Grell has been doing a good job from issue 1 of educating the Warlord n00bs (like me) of the character's rich history. It's very new reader-friendly, though I must wonder if longtime fans are finding all the past-dwelling a little annoying. Issue 9 was the most sultry, sexually charged issue yet as it seemed intent on establishing couplings amongst our main cast members. Grell definitely does "sexy" better than almost anyone in the biz, so it was nice to get a heaping helping! According to previews, he's doing the art at least a couple more issues, if not longer, so it looks like we're in for a treat! Speaking of sexy, it seems one of the more enigmatic characters is cat lady Shakira. I know if I was Morgan's main squeeze, I'd be more than a little concerned about her riding on his horse ( ) with him all of the time. I'm very curious about her and wonder what his relationship has been with her. There've been plenty of clues that his and Tara's relationship may have had some monogamy problems. Plus, there was a panel of Shakira in cat form scratching intensely on something while Tara and Morgan were getting it on. (Gotta pick up that Warlord Showcase collection some time soon...) Anyhow, Warlord remains an enjoyable, lushly illustrated book that's well worth the money. Could use a bit of a quicker pace, though.
Still "Lardy" to my friends!

I agree that Warlord has been a solid read, completely new reader friendly and packed with some of the best art in comics since it restarted. These recent Grell issues have made it only more so and I hope he stays on.
Though I read some of Grell's original run, I'm more new to the series than anything else other than looking at the gorgeous colors of old. So I'm also curious about Lardy's question on Shakira's relationship with Morgan.
These last issues were probably the most sexy and most sultry comics to come out all year IMO (or at least the ones I collect)!

The implication of a sexual relationship between Morgan and Shakira is implied more strongly in the current series than it was in the original. Even in the original series, though, there was room to read it between the lines. There was always an element of jealousy between Tara and Shakira. The question with Shakira has always been whether she is a human who becomes a cat or a cat who becomes human. The ongoing joke was that Morgan would introduce her or refer to her as "my cat" even when she was in human form. She was Morgan's companion in strange adventures and in battle on quests. Tara was more the true love and the woman who had Mrogan's heart. When it came time to protect the family or home, Tara was the noble warrior. Shakira was shown to be jealous in much the way that a cat would be jealous of somebody taking her owner's attention. Tara was typically shown as just being annoyed by Shakira, but never really threatened by her.

I was surprised to see Grell didn't do more than a couple pages this current issue (contrary to solicitation info) as I flipped though it, but I have to agree Hardin did a good job and showed considerably more Grellish flair than his prior issues. I look forward to reading it--in a few weeks.

Guys, how would a story featuring Warlord and Aquaman sound?

Not much action in Warlord #10. It's a good jumping on point for new readers. There are some flashback scenes that provide information on Morgan, Skartaris, Mariah, and Machiste. The resurrection of Warlord's arch villain, Deimos, may be bit confusing as presented. Rest assured that his return means the next few months will be consumed by a battle of epic proportions.
Hardin is doing a fine job with the art. Of course, I would prefer that Grell do every issue. If he can't, I hope he continues to contribute two page spreads like did for this issue. Gorgeous. Grell continues to deliver with strong covers, as well.

I haven't enjoyed the WARLORD revival as much as many of you, but I did enjoy 9-10 very much. I too would much prefer Grell and hope he draws as much as he is able. Otherwise, my only art complaint is I don't think Hardin draws Mariah pretty enough.

Is that Morgan on the cover? If not, could it be Tinder? The arrows certainly make me think of him, and Grell has been setting him up as a major character.
If that is Morgan on the cover, who other than Tinder or Machiste would be a likely replacement?

RE: Issue #12
Whoa! I totally did not see that coming. This a plot twist that was decades in the making. I can't say that I am happy with this development, but I'm definitely intrigued to see what happens next.

WHOA FOR REAL. I just read it and was 110% shocked. I thought for sure we would see a THE END on the last page, but no.
I wonder if this will stand? Something else else tells me... maybe not.

Grell says that this was planned back during the original run. The signs where there, and the cover to 12 was a dead giveaway, no pun intended. Who hasn't seen the famous painting of the dead indian with a spear through him still sitting on the horse?
Just take away the spear and you've got 12.
But then, he also said that DC owns the character and that they could undo it at any time if they wished, without his consent needed, so....
I personally think it a bold, real move. Like someone said, the greatest legends have ends to their stories.
Damn you, you kids! Get off my lawn or I'm callin' tha cops!
Something pithy!

Just read #12! Wow--that was totally epic! It had the feeling of something major to behold. I'm pretty damn impressed with Grell for having the courage to go forward with his vision and for having such an epic, incredible vision in the first place.
I've been loving this series since the relaunch and I think its just gotten better and better. I'm hooked and want to know more. The scope of the series seems so grand and heroic, like Lord of the Rings and such.
And man, Grell's art is just better than ever. It's almost too beautiful to be contained on the page.
I've got to strongly recommend this comic to anyone looking for something different and of just excellent quality.
I hope DC lets Grell continue to tell his story and stay so bold in the series direction.

#13 is out. Joshua is off to a good start. The book has a different feel. This might work.

I figured I'd mention this here too, I reviewed Grell's recent John Sable, Freelance miniseries by IDW in the Any Recommendations thread, and I think it was really terrific. If you're really feeling Grell's art these days and are dying for more, I recommend you check it out. It's got all the dynamism and sexiness of Warlord (with nudity! ).
