I read this this week, and felt pretty ho-hum about it. The storytelling seemed a little...loose. I didn't care much for the art, either. I'll give it a few more issues, but I dunno...wonder if Grell is rolling his eyes over this...

Not what I wanted to hear. I've been anticipating this relaunch as much as Jonah Hex and Moon Knight. Maybe moreso since I loved Grell's original series.

My only real experience with "Warlord" was the back issues I bought to complete my "Arion" collection and then a couple minis. I like sword-and-sorcery stuff, though, and fondly remember the character, so I was really looking forward to this. I was hoping the promo art was an aberration, but the whole book is a dark, overinked, ugly, muddy mess. I haven't been so turned off by art since Olivier Copiel drew the Legion. And since this isn't Legion, I actually decided not to buy it. My buddy at work went ahead and tried it, though. He felt the same way as Lancecrawler about the story and the same way I did about the art -- and he even liked Copiel.

I remember the jokes going around about Grell doing a Warlord-Green Arrow team-up - the colorists need only remember who is supposed to be who...

I couldn't bring myself to pick up the second issue of this. Any idea how it has been selling?

I never unbagged by copy of #2, #1 was too disappointing. According to the sales figures:
#1 - 73rd out of 300 w/27,443 copies sold #2 - 115th out of 300 w/21,570 copies sold
A drop of about 21.5%. A little steep but I've seen worse. The big tell will be the totals for #3.

I couldn't buy it. I was going to, but the art and coloring where so muddy, it just wasn't good.
I guess i am prejudiced in that i like crisp, clean art. But i like what i like.

The weird thing, this is Bart Sears. This guy blew us away with Cap n Falcon. He was the art supervisor for CrossGen. What happened?
Just spouting off.

I know CJ. That was what everyone was saying down at the shop the week the preview was published.
He's definitely using a way different style for this. It looks like he's trying to emulate 70s black & white fantasy work, when he'd be better off trying to create a fantasy world in his own style.

Greg Land was AWESOME when he created Sojourn. If DC got him doing that kind of work, Warlord would be a Top 10 title. Heck, if Sears was doing that kind of work, it'd be up there.
Just spouting off.

This is the style Sears developed for The Path at CrossGen. Very muddy. Ironic, because I thought Warlord really lends itself to his original style.

Land would be great. Butch Guice, who did the art on Ruse, would have been good on Warlord as well, in my opinion.

Has anyone picked up the latest incarnation of Warlord? How is it?

I have. So far, Grell is ignoring Bruce Jones' series, and he has a decent story set up, while at the same time recapping what happened in his old series.

I've added it to my pull list. I'm a fan of the original series and would pick this up for the Grell covers alone. The interior art pays plenty of homage to the original series, and the story so far is serving to establish a connection to Grell's previous work. It's a nice nostalgia trip for me. I wonder if the younger and newer fans will embrace it.

I'm buying it too but haven't read the first two issues yet. Will post more when I do. The covers are simply gorgeous...makes me really wish Grell was a monthly artist again.

I came into this with expectations as low as possible, mainly because the Bart Sears series a few years back was so terrible and generally Warlord appearances in the DCU (outside of one cool Green Arrow one about a decade back) are pretty bad. When I was just old enough to look at the covers of my fathers comics, the original Warlord run was wrapping up. But I always loved to look at the covers for that awesome Grell art. Well, I've got to say, this was a really good start! The interior art is spectacular and this is the best Grell has been on writing in a long time. I'm definitely in for the long haul I think, especially because Warlord still remains so unique among the current comic book industry.

I too added it to my pull. Enjoyed issues 1-3. The Grell covers are sweet and the interior art is realy Grell homage-ey.
Story is pretty fun so far too.

Is it just me, or is anyone else wondering how those two managed to become dicators so fast?

Good point, and one I was/am hoping Grell will explain in issue 4.

Read #4 and I continue to be surprisingly impressed by what I see. This is a really great Warlord story the likes I didn't think could be produced again.
It has all the dynamics of a great story and the art is spectacular. Though not fully "sword & sorcery", it is the perfect example of that type of title on the market right now.
I applaud DC on this and Jonah Hex. I just hope people are buying the title.

Oh yeah, guess what. In DC's October solicits, a certain writer will be doing the art for a couple of issues.

The cover for number five is amazing and the story is still solid. Morgan now has enough ammunition for the life of the series. I remember a debate in the letters pages of the original series about him never running out of bullets. Apparently Grell remembers that debate too and wanted to put the issue to rest early this time around.
