IT RAWKED! SPOILERS FOLLOW, FANBOY!
From the first page-- which features the Source Wall from Kirby's New Gods-- I knew I was in for a treat!
Ambush Advice: Maximize your enjoyment of ABYN with a thorough re-read of AMBUSH BUG # 3 (first mini) before you dive into the new book. It just so happens I did JUST that last night, and was glad I did while reading ABYN.
Other stuff:
The Bug looks great on crisp shiny paper!
Learn who was REALLY behind the death of Sue Dibny!
Ambush Bug vs. BAT-GIRL! No, not her. And not HER, either... but BAT-GIRL, the original pre-Wolfman retconned-into-Flamebird Bat-Girl, from Teen Titans West crica late 70s.
Cheeks!
Bow before the chipper terror of.... GO-GO CHEX, Wonder Chick!
And diya know there's a VARIANT COVER? And it's drawn by GIFFEN!??! And it's a lot more hella-awesome than the solicited cover?!?!?!? And it's an homage to ADVENTURE 300?!?!?!?! And it features both Bat-Girl and Jonni DC?!?!?!?!?!?!? And I bought ONE OF EACH!!!???!?!!??!!!? (seriously, and that's something I have NEVER done!)
Learn why Gail Simone might be annoyed by this issue!
And just what do The Phantom Stranger and Cobalt Kid have in common? FIND OUT THIS ISSUE!
PLUS: AN AMBUSH BUG CASTMENBER DIES!!!!!!!!!!!!
So much fun I might read it again!

I've never read any of the Ambush Bug minis or specials--do you think it's accessible to new readers, Lash? You reference to the old series has me worried...
Still "Lardy" to my friends!

GREAT SPACE!!! Lardy, you HAVE to sample Ambush Bug!
A re-read of AB# 3 can maximize the fun but certainly isn't mandaory... here's why!
PSEUDOSPOILERS FOLLOW, FANBOY
I mention A re-read of AB # 3 because that issue features several "forgotten" DCU castmembers like Ace the Bathound, Egg Fu, The Green Team and Gloorp, the phonograph-eating blob.
ABYH # 1 makes use of some of these characters within the story, but each one is identified.
It just kinda tickled me that they used these bozos at all!

I have #1,2 & 4, Son of Ambush Bug, the Stocking Stuffer, the Nothing Special, the Secret Origins issue, heck even the Mayfair game module, but I have never, in 15 years of back issue bin diving, found a copy of #3. I supposed I should try that newfangled internet thing at some point.

WOW, Rouge... that sounds awfully frustrating to be missing that one issue!
Well, I wish I hadn't mentioned the AB # 3 thing... truly, it isn't mandatory... if anything, the appearance of certain characters from AB # 3 is more like an easter egg for those who have read the issue!
I certainly hope this doesn't keep anyone from getting ABYN!

While the rest of the DC universe willows, AB once again takes on the tough case.

Great art on the new book, but I guess I missed half of the jokes for a) language reasons and b) not being a DC knowitall, especially about these most obscure characters... So can someone explain the ending of #1 to me ?

Death's appearance in the Legion issue in which Earth bit the dust was apparently a one-of-a-kind?

I am forever going to have an image of Flem chasing Alan Moore down a hallway waving a TP/Hair doll.
Active LMB character is still Beast Boy.

Finally got to read the first issue...and I have to say that I'd let Giffen kill Karate Kid every month in a monthly Bug series.
Active LMB character is still Beast Boy.

Yeah... Super-Karate pales before the magnificence that is the bug.
Plus, it'd be funny to see all the new ways Giff could come up with to kill Val every month...

Hard to argue with that, Dev... AB:YN #2, ATOMIC ROBO and the latest FRANKLIN RICHARDS are the three books I'm most looking forward to when my DCBS shipment finally gets here tomorrow.

Here's an interview with Keith Giffen , in which he talks about his career, Ambush Bug and future projects. I thought he was quite funny but he didn't get many laughs out of the interviewer.... Giffen claims that the page with no dialogue, leading into the Blue Beetle segment, was entirely a mistake - but they're going to use it as a future gag. I read issues 1-3 on the weekend. It's unique, I love it and it makes me happy to be a comic geek.

So while the unending wait for ABYN # 6 continues to be... well, unending... and there was a big sale at the CBS today, and I was tired of waiting for EDE to buy it... I went ahead and got the AMBUSH BUG SHOWCASE!! Best purchase EVER!
AMBUSH BUG REDUX REVIEW
DC COMICS PRESENTS # 52
POINTS OF INTEREST
First appearance of Ambush Bug
Rare appearance of the short-lived new 4-member Doom Patrol created by Kupperberg/Staton in the late 70s SHOWCASE revival.
NOTES FOR NEWBIES
Throwing ice cubes at him is proven to be an ineffective way of battling Superman, as Celsius learns this issue.
WACKY FACTOR
Fairly high; Superman's chitchat with the men he is rescuing as the issue opens is amusing, as is the repeated use of the word "blooie".
Line of the issue: "Not -URP!- exactly the TASTIEST thing I've ever ingested!" --Superman
IT'S ALL FUN & GAMES UNTIL SOMEONE ENDS UP HAVING TO LIVE THE REST OF THEIR LIVES COVERED IN SPECIALLY-TREATED BANDAGES
The issue actually has tragic repercussions for Val "Negative Woman" Vostok (and I ain't talking about Buggy's crush on her).
Overall, a cute diversion. It serves to give a brief history of the Doom Patrol, has some fun moments with Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane, and most importantly for Ambush Bug fans, serves to tell us visually why Buggy later on never appears out of costume... so that no one would confuse him with Lex Luthor. See EPILOGUE # 2 on the last page for the visual proof!
