I'm still enjoying it, but I hate that a whole cadre of X-folks are about to show up.

Well, the Age of X is over and the helm has passed to DnA. And so, we see the return of Nate Grey.

I enjoyed the "Unfinished Business" arc and also the latest issue with Dani's psychiatrist friend.
I know nothing will ever match the awe and wonder of those first 70ish issues of NEW MUTANTS, but I can't help but miss the old school setting.
This is pretty good, though. I'm cool with the kids growing up. DnA are doing well so far.

Don't date yourself more than you have to (no, I didn't mean *that*...). NEW MUTANTS debuted in 1982.
I've liked what DNA have done so far, but they seriously need to give Sunspot and Magma some exposure.
I'm wondering how much of Brainiac 5 will pop up in Cypher? So far, I don't mind X-Man nearly as much as I thought I would. Most recently, their trip to Hel ended up in Hell at the end of the last issue (thanks to Cypher's magical inexperience, and Brainy-like willingness to go ahead and read a spell anyway). That was a twist, as I was expecting Asgardianess, not Mephisolioness!

Oh I meant the first 1-70 or so issues, not 1970s. I wasn't clear.
Reading NEW MUTANTS # 1 by sunlight sitting in an old chair and my Granny's house is one of my most vivid comicbook memoriees for some reason.

I picked up my first issue in awhile because of DnA with #28 and I thought it was pretty good. Anyone want to give me the current status quo?
Are Magma, Sunspot and Warlock still on the team? Is Cypher alive? Is anyone dating? Is the series still plagued by random X-Men bogging panel time?

Doug's alive and a badass... the entire bunch of old-skoolers are on the team except Rhane.
Sam and Dani made out not long ago.
I skip all X-crossover issues (I did get the FEAR ITSELF issue today)

Cannonball's taking a break from active duty. Karma's doing something similar. And Magik's in lockdown. The characters are still appearing, though. Just not going on missions. Particularly Magik.

I also enjoyed it! You know, I might be back officially with this title. Yay DnA!
Dough really rocked here. It feels so cool to say that.
Also, I like how Sunspot is being written. He's usually my least favorite of all the original+ New Mutants but he had all the best lines here.
Also loved Illyiana's line about X-Man. I kind of like that potential chemistry.
All in all, I liked everything about this issue.

So I was at a mini-comic book convention over the weekend and was able to score all kinds of goodies. Among them was New Mutants #8-11, which includes the introduction of Magma, Selene and Nova Roma for the first time. I'd never read these issues before.
All I can say is WOW. These are some damn good comics! The Nova Roma concept is a really great mash-up of the lost civilization idea with Ancient Rome (one of my passions), and Claremont gets really detailed about how it could exist without anyone finding it. The politics, culture and social norms are all delved into, making it feel like a really well fleshed out setting.
I've always liked Magma a lot and seeing her introduction story is great. She's not as much of a focus as I would have thought for most of the story but it adds a level of mystique to her.
Reading these issues reminds of me two things:
(1) I love Rahne, and think she might be one of the best 'kid sister' characters ever in comics. I genuinely feel for her every time she lets her tough upbringing get her down, and I just want to help her.
(2) I totally have a crush on Dani. Years ago, I used to be all about Kitty Pryde (when I was a teenager), but having recently reread those Kitty / X-Men stories, I found I still liked Kitty a lot, but didn't quite have that same "in love" feeling for her. Meanwhile, I always liked Dani, but rereading these stories, I suddenly think that Dani totally had one of the most attractive personalities in comics! There's something about her being a little pushy and so brave, but being very feminent, that just works. I still like her today, of course, but I'd never realized that in her earliest appearances she was so damn awesome. Teenage me should totally have ditched his crush on Kitty and developed one for Dani!
You may now return to the modern era after this brief interruption of classic comics review...

Yeah the old-school NMs are tops for sure.
I just finished # 30, it was just okay for me.

NEW MUTANTS #31: There ought to be a word for interesting art that is completely wrong for the story it's illustrating. I like the artist, though his Sunspot is atrocious, and the quirky sensibility he brings to his work.
I guess I can see an editor thinking that would be a fit for scenes set in Hell and Hel. I think a better match would be more 'normal', everyday settings, where the quirkiness really stands out.
I think cleaner, more traditional art would've sold this. The sense of 'epicness' isn't there.
What is there, though, is a good story. Particularly for Dani, who chops her way out of the bizarre-looking Bonegrinder. Before her dramatic exit or entrance, depending on how you look at it, we learn a bit of the monster's back story. That was a nice surprise- monster/henchmen/figures in the crowd don't often get this kind of exploration. So, I found that fun.
Magma and Cypher get some nice moments, as well. I like that DNA seem respectful of her and her ability. I'm curious what a story written by them centered around her would be like-- I hope we find out soon.
They haven't really captured Bobby yet, and certainly aren't aided by the art. Perhaps it's a good thing they aren't focusing upon him yet.
Warlock, always seeming out of his element without the character realizing it, was *really* out of his element here- and knew it.
The issue ends with a quite chilling page that packed more punch than anything else I've read in FEAR ITSELF or any of it's spin-offs. Except for possibly when Veil and Mettle had to kill.

NEW MUTANTS #32: One of the guest stars gets better and then acts delightfully in character. Doesn't quite live up to last issue's promise, but successfully finishes up the FEAR ITSELF tie-in.

Picked up New Mutants 33, not because I loved it so much but, because I'm in for the new direction it's taking. (I'm thinking the next issue will be better and I didn't want to miss out on the set up)
I'm glad to have them get away from the rest of the X-Universe and be their own characters.
Like Dani said in this issue, they're an odd fit, graduates but still 2nd gen.
I wish the art was a little bit better, and I'm not sure how I'm gonna like the next issue because I have no idea who that character is that they're hunting down.
I wasn't in ... but now I'm in since it looks like this book will feature more New Mutants more of the time.

Yeah- much less Cyclops and White Queen would benefit this book greatly. On the other hand, at least *one* of the younger mutants should join the cast, I think. Anole, maybe. If no younger members, then small groups of them should guest star every once in awhile.
#33 didn't live up to the cover at *all*. I was expecting some joy and freewheelin'. Instead, they just moved out. I guess as a reader we can interpret that cover image as how the characters feel about the move- and who can blame them?
The character they're hunting is Blink. She's a teleporter. A versions of her debuted in Age of Apocalypse- though I *think* that a regular Marvel Earth incarnation has appeared as well (in the Selene 'event' a year or so ago?) so it's probably her that the New Mutants will be hunting.

Blink actually appeared way back in the Phalanx Covenant (1994?)--and then subsequently died in that same story. One summer later, she was an important player in Age of Apocalypse and fans really took to her. For like 8-10 years, X-fans asked editors about Blink coming back via letters, emails and at cons. They were actually perplexed by it, as I've read, since she only was ever in those two stories and one was an alternate universe!
In Exiles they re-introduced her (not sure if the AoA one or another). And then in the recent story where dead characters returned the "616" (re: true MU) Blink returned. This was something like 15 years in the making.

She's apparently now a groupie of a suspiciously nefarious punk or death metal band. One whose gigs curiously coincide with natural disasters.
I was somewhat surprised by the New Mutant's meeting their neighbor. An old-fashioned scene. I'm not sure what I think about it yet.
I don't like Cypher's gaunt appearance. I liked that he was the dreamboat and I enjoyed the respect his ability's been getting. Though if his sunken cheeks are leading to meeting fellow back-from-the-dead post Selenites, The Hellions, I'll embrace it. 'Cause I'm *really* curious about them. Hopefully, they'll be one of the 'loose ends' this team now exists to tie up soon. Really, I'm already looking past Blink. I suspect she's joining the cast, but maybe not.

I don't like them having a neighbor in their building ... she's either a Sentinel Prime, or toast. I'm ok with them living in the world and having neighbors but, in the same building seems like death waiting to happen. Or she could turn into their granny major domo. Also, I thought Amara's job interview was hilarious! That's about how long I figured their whole "living in the world and getting jobs" would last !!! Next issue, Dani submits to Roberto's requests to bank roll them. LOL. it's very 'real world tv show' btw.

Blink seems pretty cool, in a 90s way so far, she *throws* her teleportation power .... while a bit gimmicky ... does provide for some more exciting panels than Magik's teleportation ability.
The art is still sub par for me, I think the break downs of the panels are pretty good but, the execution is still .... just not sexy/polished/styled enough. (it looks like a cartoon to me rather than a comic book or *real*) IMO

Wow, thanks for summarizing Blinks life - this will certainly help me when I'm getting my new comic books including New Mutants next week I did actually read most of her major appearances as it seems - Phalanx, AoA and Exiles. Funny there isn't much more. But hey, there were actually Dead people rising in a Marvel storyline called 616? How lame is that? DC would never do... ehm... well...

The Blink who appeared in Exiles was the AoA version. She's a more "heroic" version than the 616 one, for sure.
