I'll take a look at it, but I'm fearful that this will be another case of "you can't go home again." The infinite flacid launches of Teen Titans and New Warriors being examples.

I picked up the New Mutants history / origins special thingie and that was pretty groovy. They just did one with Wolverine. It basically takes images from the entire history of the team and gives a timeline, and it was a nice way to pump myself up for the coming series.

No comments on # 1 yet? I'm surprised.

I was also suprised by many other things in this issue. Didn't know Illyana had already returned in the Xverse.

Illyana's offer to Amara re: Empath had me freaked.

I'm tentatively onboard. Hopefully they won't cock up this first arc.

Illyana returned in X-Infernus, which was a follow up to her arc in the New X-Men v2 series. It wasn't an amazing LS-- Piotr was a nutjob about his sister, which I always hate, and Pixie suffered more for basically no reason, IMHO-- but the art was pretty decent and Belasco's daughter was pretty bad @$$. Plus, C.B. Cebulski wrote it, so you know he loves the characters (for all the good that does them wink ).

RE: #1-- WHERE IS DANI???? *is needy* Wahhh, I want my favorite NM chick already!! (What do you mean it's only been one issue and I'm being insane? Shut yo' mouth!)

Okay but seriously. I liked the scene with Scott and Sam where he's all, "I trust you, Sam," and Sam is like, o.O "Really?" It was so cute because Sam's always insecure and I love him (crush what?) but he's totally earned it, too. (Even if he does consistently get his butt handed to him whenever he's an X-Man-- what's up with that?)

I also liked the part where Roberto was like, "No more playing teacher, sweet!" because I feel like that fits him better than the patient Young X-Men mentor guy. And when he's all, "We look like grown-ups!" in their new uniforms, too. That was awesome. Oh! And the boys arguing about who got to drive the Blackbird/Jet/thing and SUV. Classic.

Illyana is still a creepy little thing, which is sort of her shtick and I like it. Not sure I'm wild about her doing the time travel rumba because, to my recollection, she's never been overly great at controlling that aspect of her power. I preferred it that way because there's a sort of God Complex temptation when you're dealing with time travel, y'know? And she's the sort that might play into it what with her evil tendencies and all.

I also like that Amara's thing with Empath isn't really over 'cause, well, even when it has been over it's never been over, you know? He's either being butthurt about her or she's yelling at him about how she hates him but not really and... yes. Theirs is a complex relationship that I hope will be explored more, if not in the New Mutants series, then in Uncanny X-Men (since the Red Queen/Maddie is back in action).

So, yes. Lots of pieces that I love. I also thought Karma's bits were done well, though there weren't too many. I feel like she'd sort of begun to come into her own some in Uncanny/Manifest Destiny as she pushes her powers with Emma and interacted with the team. I'm hoping that continues and she's not shunted back to boring again. That would be sad.

Seriously, though-- where's Dani??? Click Here For A SpoilerMaybe with the kid, um, Marci? I mean, if she's not a construct or something... I'm hoping she shows up next issue 'cause as pretty as the cover is, I want more!! (Demanding? Yes, yes I am.)

I have some hope for Zeb Wells, I know I've read things by him in the past and been pleased. Of course, I also enjoyed Guggenheim's YXM, too (though the first four issues were weak), so my tastes do not mean success for comic books. I'm definitely giving this a fair shot and staying optimistic until I have good reason not to be. Right now? I do.

That said-- the big reveal of Click Here For A SpoilerLegion being alive and Karma being trapped in his mind leaves me a smidge nervous. On the one hand, villains are fabulous, especially when they're hardcore/worthy adversaries. On the other... I feel like using this particular villain could end up being a way to somehow force the team to stay together instead of it being a natural/organic process. And if Wells does do that, then it will either be really great story-telling or undermine everything with its triteness.

Jury's still out. We shall see.

OH AND ALSO! (Because I didn't write enough before, right?)

There was a hint of Doug returning on one of those "things to come" pages for Young X-Men. (The page that also included the "Y-Men" which did appear in YXM and Illyana/Magik complete with hooves, tail and horns, which I'm assuming is what X-Infernus was born out of.)

So. I WONDER IF THIS THREAD WILL CARRY OVER TO NMs v3?? This would make me a VERY HAPPY BUNNY. laugh Clearly, I am a smidge excited about this whole thing. Please don't mess it up, Marvel. Please.

It was a fun first issue. The banter between Sam and 'Berto countered with Magik's ranting made for some dialog. There's fun and drama right there.

Even with the matching uniforms, Sam still has his goggles. Now let's get him a haircut.

SO are Doug and Warlock still around, like Illyana? The cover should obviously not be considered anything to go by, and I am way out of touch with the Xverse.

Last I remember of them was "Douglock" in EXCALIBUR, iirc.

Actually, Warlock showed up in Nova during the "Annihilation: Conquest" event. Pretty sure he survived that crossover, too.

He did - he and his kid were last seen going round the Kree Empire to dePhalanx everyone.

Doug has been dead for 20 years.

I mostly liked this. I liked that the characters and the changes that have happened to them since their last appearances together aren't being totally ignored.

Sunspot's coloring was a bit of a miss-- hope that gets corrected.

Sam's hair-- I think it looks great, BUT it sure could be a hindrance for someone with his particular superpower.

Amara-- already with the Empath stuff? The short scene she had with her now-dead lover in 198 felt more 'real' to me than anything she's shared with Emanual (that's about the only thing from that mini that did... though the creepy villain was interesting. Wonder whatever happened to him?)

Still, I like that she felt some compassion for Empath. And I enjoyed her reaction to Illyana's 'offer'. I'd like to see some acknowledgment of the scene I mentioned, though.

Illyana- she's always been my least favorite New Mutant. I think mainly because of the rapid aging thing. That and the demon-sorceress connection. And that phrase 'the sum total of her power' tacked onto every time that sword gets whipped out.

She does get fun lines full of barely-suppressed demon-glee, though. I can see why writers would enjoy scripting her.

So, I felt much more sympathetic to Anole (the gay lizard kid) and his vehement dislike of her. Sam and Roberto's loyalty to her was exactly what I'd want from them. However, Anole was expressing exactly the same thing for *his* crew and how they were treated. It's one thing for Sam and co. to accept and even understand Magik's limbo-influenced thinking and behavior.

But to those younger mutants? She comes across as evil witch. All the way.

The plot with the family is interesting. I look forward to seeing how Karma and Dani and the rest of the team are involved in it.

Choke! I'm sorry to see we don't agree on Illyana... we usually are right there together in which femme superchicks we love! You've always care more for Amara than Illyana iirc and it was opposite for me.

Another fave I was thrilled to see in issue 1 was SHAN, Karma! I always felt she got the crap end of the stick in this group.

Oh, yeah! No doubt about that-- but Karma *did* get that quasi-LSH connection by getting superfat-assed!

I would've liked Illyana a lot more if she'd just remained a teleporter through time and space. Actually, I *do* like Illyana Rasputin- sister of Colossus. It's 'Magik' that leaves me a little cold. Expecially when she sprouts horns and hooves and acts all evil. Not a fan of that for 'Snowflake'.

You're right- it could well be that I thought she stole a good bit of Magma's thunder as far as her timing in joining and how much story got devoted to her.

I *don't* hate or really dislike the character, though. I just don't like her as much as I do the other New Mutants.

The character from the original run that I'd really like to see return who hasn't yet is Catseye. There was a ton of potential for that character, I thought.

Catseye and Empath were the most interesting of the Hellions first introduced (although Tarot was also intriguing). I would have loved to see more of Catseye, particularly in interactions with Rahne.

Then again, I'd love to see more of Rahne's Wolf Prince! The New Mutants in Asgard run left all sorts of interesting plot-potential lying around!

Did you know the Wolf Prince is back in the pages of X-FORCE?

He's been in one issue, so it's not like he's an oft-appearing cast member. I *think* it's been confirmed that they'll be getting back to him.

The book's currently tied up in the Cable/Messiah War stuff, but once that's not the spotlight, I'm sure he'll be back courting Wolfsbane.

I'm of two minds on this series:

I want to give it a chance since I'm a fan of most of the line-up but on the other hand I'm afraid it will most likely be an exercise for needless continuity-porn.

I think you're said out loud what a lot of us are holding are breaths and waiting for Actor. I like the line-up a lot too but desperately am hoping for new, dynamic stories that aren't plagued with nostalgia, which these days is akin to comic book swine flu.

Thus far, I think it looks good. I love the characters of Magik and Magma (the bridge between Mystery Lad and Lash? laugh ) so I like seeing them in action thus far. Looking forward to Dani's entrance.

In regards to Doug Ramsey, I really hope no one ever considers bringing him back. His death is one of the few 'real' ones that seems to stick, and its not like bringing him back would add a needed power to the team. I like Warlock too, but wouldn't care if he didn't stay on permantly.

I do wish the whole team would get more distinct uniforms, though. I want to see this title succeed for like 100+ issues. New uniforms are a must then.

#2-- Legion overcrowds things, doesn't he? How could he not? I liked the device that puts aspects of himself in 'the driver's seat'. Seems like Karma's the perfect character to challenge this powerhouse.

I liked Magma's loyalty.

Enjoyed Sam and Roberto's 'moment' as they took to the skies (though Sunspot can fly, can't he? I suppose he can't at Sam's speed...)

Dani looks fierce in her issue's end splash page appearance (there were a lot of those the last couple of weeks...)

I'm looking forward to reading how she'll fit in with the team now.

I think, Cobie, that you'd best prepare yourself. I think it's a pretty good bet that Doug Ramsey *will* return in these pages. That's just a feeling, though, based on interviews I've read granted by the author.

I also think it's possible that several, if not all, the Hellions will be back, as well.

Well, Roberto's not invulnerable when he flies. Going with Sam takes care of that. They seem to be downplaying 'Berto's flying abilities. I prefer that, actually. I like the powers to stay more individual.

PREVIEW for NM#3

Dani needs to seriously kick Sam's ass for that. Click Here For A SpoilerProtecting her by leaving her trapped in a little cell?? What if Legion comes back? She's got nowhere to run! It looks like he didn't even leave her the costume he brought for her, that might have offered a little protection. Of all the stupid, idiotic, amateur moves.

Not to mention it was just plain insulting. mad

Oh, btw,Click Here For A SpoilerWarlock's on the cover for issue #5, IIRC.

I'm not so sure, Legion's kind of like a force of nature. Magneto wouldn't be guaranteed success against him. Oh, wait, isn't that how AoA started?

I can't believe how mad I got at Sam after reading that. I guess it surprised me. Still, flaws are good. I usually find him pretty boring.

#3-- cranks the heat up. Magik's brave, possibly foolhardy jaunt tightened the tension. I'm very curious about what happens next.

Legion's new alters were fun. What caused him to further splinter? He's a supremely tragic character, really. It'd be interesting to see him teamed with Magneto, someday.

I like the set-up of a bit of confrontation between Sam and Dani. It's wrong that she'll think she has to prove herself to him, but it should be fun to read about.

'Berto and Amara are getting shorted, storywise. Karma, too, in a way. I hope those three get some focus soon.

Thoughts-- in bullet form!

 • Dude, how true to form was Illyana? SO GOOD!
 • And when Sam got his comeuppance for how he dismissed Dani, I was quite amused! And pleased. (But then my love for Dani is no secret.)
 • I loved Roberto's reaction to Legion's bit about no one loving him. laugh He's had some great comic relief lines. I'm hoping they keep that up.
 • Am I the only missing Rahne? frown Kinda sad she's wrapped up with Kyle/Yost in X-Force...

Gotta wonder how things'll get wrapped up. Will they call the X-Men? Will Yana rescue Shan? Will Dani actually get to use one of her weapons?!

But, more than that, I'm curious to see how the team stays together. I'm really hoping it isn't something tired/trite/whathaveyou. I feel like that would take away so much from the title, which is, IMHO, off to a bangin' start! (I mean, when I saw Legion in #1, I was shocked and it definitely hooked me in!)
