Read the preview of "What Were They Thinking?"--holy crap! This looks like the funniest Giffen thing in YEARS, and that's saying something!

Stories? Hmm. Oh, yeah, there were words on the pages. laugh Missy Muerte was probably the best one. I haven't read Miss Adventure yet and I think Young Captain Adventure just suffered due to the large turnover in writers/artists. I'd like to get the whole story and read it straight through but I'm missing too many issues currently.

He wrote and drew a series of stories for either Penthouse Comix or its sister mag Men's Adventure Comix, about a private eye. It was in his TRENCHER artstyle. Funny, if not more than a liiiiittle raunchy... I'll have to dig them out and scan them. evil

Amazing. I bought 4 Keith Giffen comics in the same day-- HERO SQUARED SPECIAL, HERO SQUARED #1, WHAT WERE THEY THINKING #1, and DEFENDERS #2.

DEFENDERS definitely had the best art of the "new" books. There's something about the look Maguire-Rubinstein are giving the book that reminds me of the exact point JUST when Keith was blowing deadlines on the series but before he was fired-- when Michael Golden & Terry Austin did a fill-in, having to redraw Keith's pages in order to get the book out on deadline. The only thing that really feels "off" to me is Dormammu's personality & dialogue. REALLY. I mean, I'm in the middle of re-reading the REAL stuff by STEVE DITKO, and somehow, there's just no way I can bridge that gap completely. Whereas Hulk is virtually my favorite version (where he had Banner's mind, but kinda talked like a gangster) and Namor has ALWAYS been a hot-tempered snob. The Surfer I just don't "get", however funny it may seem.

With all the stuff about how Hulk & Subby don't like Doc or each other and "never" want to work together again, I'd say a follow-up without them, but with Nighthawk, Valkyrie & Hellcat would be the way to go.

HERO SQUARED feels to me to be EXACTLY what Keith should be doing-- his own ideas, his own characters, where nobody can tell him what to do or not, and where he really can't F*** over anyone else's characters. I like the art-- at least 100 times better than the cover Keith did himself. (Whose assinine idea was that? UGLY art and not even a LOGO??? That should have been the BACK COVER, dammit! I'm really sick of all this "alternate cover" crap. I'd have preferred the OTHER version, but I didn't have a choice at my comics shop). I think it's a bit lazy or sloppy to be shooting the art from PENCILS.

I'm looking forward to how this develops, and I hope some of the characters eventually stop acting so stupid. (For some reason, I'm reminded of FUTURAMA-- on watching reruns of the 1st season, I was reminded that the show really WASN'T THAT GOOD when it started-- buit it got way, WAY better as it went.)

I've got issues 4, 5 and 7 (the last) of Men's Adventure Comix (before it became Penthouse Comix) and not a sign of Giffen. Although Kevin Maguire did work on Hericane, Jason Pearson on Action Figures and the Davis/Farmer duo on Kraken's Wake did appear in those three issues.

Heh... I found it. IT was in Men's Adventure Comix #6, and the character was Dick Willing, Private Dick.

Seeing as this is a FAMILY board, I'll scan the 5 p. opus and send it to you, Scooter. lol shake

Great interview. Nice to see Keith do some more serious stuff. I am a fan of that Marvel cosmic universe Jim Starlin really made popular. Can't wait to get this!!! Giffen is the man!

Howlong Commandos sounds like one of the funnest/action packed books in a long time. The art looks great. Very hip for these old characters.

I'd like to see Giffen maybe take a more serious approach if he does another Defenders mini. But I am enjoying the current one much.

One more Giffen thought I may have said here before...Imperial Guard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He's doing Marvel books...give him the Marvel Legion knock offs. Be it a serious adventure take a loony poking fun at the Legion take. whatever!

Actually, Giffen on IMPERIAL GUARD is a stroke of genius, Jorg. This may be your best idea ever! It would kick ass.

I read HERO SQUARED # 2.

It was pretty good, and I love Sloat, but I just don't see this lasting very long. It's got the "Independent Doom" hanging over it like a black cloud.

What Were They Thinking? was okay - not as funny as I had hoped. Of the three stories, I thought the middle one worked best - not just from a humour standpoint, but the way the words matched the pictures. I didn't get that sense for the first story, in which the soldier was supposed to be a very ugly girl. And the last - the gay regiment - it's sort of been done to death.

I find Giffen is so hit or miss. When he's on, I love him - but some of his stuff just doesn't work for me.

New Giffen interview at CBR from Jonah Weiland.

Quote from Keith on not 'cheapening' other writer's work:

Quote
It's that easy to undo. Of course, undoing it now would cheapen a story that had to be told because the end result is worth it. It's also disrespectful to the writer who came before. There's a reason I bumped the Legion five years later when I wrote "Legion of Super-Heroes." It's because I wanted Paul Levitz' run on the title to remain inviolate. More fool me.
When asked when the last time he was so excited about a project (in relation to his current excitement for his involvement in 52):

Quote
(thinks) Taking over "Legion of Super-Heroes" after Paul's run and finding out I could bump it five years into the future. I try not to get too excited about projects because... Who knows? A lot of the stuff that's been the most successful for me has been stuff I thought would end my career. I really thought when we did "Justice League" back then that it was doomed. I put "Lobo" out as an afterthought, thinking he'd die on the vine. Wait..."Great Darkness." When Paul told me what he wanted to do with that story I thought, "Wow, this is going to be something special."

Hmmm... I dropped Hero Squared after 3 issues, I think... just couldn't justify that $4 price anymore.

I am, however, currently rereading my AMBUSH BUG collection (now totally complete thanks to a favor from one of my dear friends from the North a while back).

Currently up to SON OF... # 1. It's amazing how even 20-plus years and upteen rereads later I can still find something new to giggle about!

Lash, did you read Annhilation, over at Marvel? It was Keith at his best doing space-opera sci-fi! Easily the best Giffen scripted story I've read in the last 10 years, better than all of his last few JLI minis. Some character included (but not limited to): Nova, Moondragon, Gamora, Drax, Thanos, Star Lord, Super-Skrull, Ronan, Phyla (Captain Marvel's daughter), and a bunch of others. Even if you're not a fan of a bunch of them, you probably will be after. For instance, consider me a HUGE Ronan fan now!

btw, Giffen has been playing with the obscure Marvel world for years now. It's all one big story if you look at it. Or atleast they interact. It started in Marvel Comics Presents in the 90s. He had a character called Lunatik (Lobo ripoff) as the feature. Characters like Drax, Starlord, Skreet all appeared.

Has anyone read his Reign of the Zodiac series?

Lash and other Giff fans, I highly reccomend Marvel's 'Starlord' mini-series by Keith! Issue #1 was hella-kewl, though really the set-up issue. Tons of great characters that I want Giffen to write.

But most of all, our girl Mantis is in it!

I looked through this at the cbs and thought it looked good. As Cobie said, it was a set-up issue, so I decided I'll start buying with #2.

Love seeing Mantis again. Has anything else ever been done with or to her son, named QUOI, I believe? They appeared in a miniseries a few years back, along with several other cosmic-types.

Anyway, I thought the Starlord set-up reminded me quite a bit of FARSCAPE (the late, great sci-fi series that might not be so late, after all-- as there's supposed to be a web-based series beginning at an unknown time).
