You could also say that about all the characters in the book and in a bunch of other books.

My theory is that current writers work behind the scenes to flesh out these characters, but we, the readers, never get to see that behind the scenes stuff that would make the character fuller and respond to him/her.

I think you're theory is right. I wonder why that happens, that so much is lost in translation when the actual stories are told. By interviews we can see there is so much more to the characters that often goes unsaid.

Yet, I imagine tons of fans don't read online interviews with creators, as I know I skip them more than not. So a lot of that behind the scenes characterization gets lost.
