You just don't see covers that have this much depth anymore. I'm also impressed that Barry was able to do this one in one shot. Nice job Barry!

Thank you So much for the pencils again, Barry. These "inside" looks are very special.
You know you have to stay on the Legion forever now, there's not another artist alive that we'd trust the way we do you. You're going to be one seriously tough act to follow.

Thanks! Here's the better scan of the inks and also a scan I did of the cover halfway through the inking process....hope you enjoy them! Clicking on the thumbnails will take you to larger versions as usual! Thanks again to Nightcrawler for the hosting!

This is one heck of a cover.
To me a great cover should be both a wonderful piece of art AND a way to entice the reader into buying and reading the comic book it adorns. Remember the old covers that used to put slogans like “this is not an imaginary tale” or “inside the most shocking story we have ever told” on them. Things like that, together with a dramatic pose or action shot would always sucker me into buying the book.
And boy does this one qualify as a great cover.
I find this one incredibly graceful yet powerful as well. Is it, as Fat Cramer said, an image of Invisible Kid remembering? To me it looks as if this could be the expulsion or resignation of IK. The legion is turning its back on him, and they are all heading back to the club house and IK looks sad, (or is that ashamed?) Ultra Boy is pointing an accusing finger, but is that his anger at IK for something the kid has done or is it anger at the kid leaving and “betraying” the ideals of the Legion. Sort of saying “hey you where are you going” another possibility is that IK is doing what he feels is right and that this has put him in conflict with the Legion, his sadness is because not only is he estranged from his family but now also from his surrogate family in the legion?.
So much from one image.
And for me at least, a real hook into buying and wanting to read the story behind this cover.
Faithfull

Its art, pure and simple. I almost don't want to see it with the logo slapped across the top. Kinda makes me wish they could do dual covers, one with the logo, price and UPC info and then one pure one so we get the full effect.
And thanks once again for sharing the process with us Barry. It is so great to have a creator take the time to show us these things. I never would have imagined, growing up, that I'd be able to see the real art behind the covers on a book that I read.
Speaking of the art and the covers, Barry, do you have a cover that is your favorite? One from the covers we've been able to see so far (#1-10)?

Well #10 was my favorite...until I did #11 Actually that's usually the truth - the one I;ve just done is usually a favorite until I do the next - it takes a passage of time before I can be objective. Besides the latest one I think probably #2 just shades it for me...but I might give a different answer tomorrow ...I did like #5 a lot... Do you think it's a good idea to include the scans in a general thread about solicitations like this one - or would it be better for me to put them in a separate thread so people know where to find them?

I think starting a new thread for them is good. That way we can talk about the art itself and your process and then leave the other thread to speculate about the issue itself. Your thoughts on your favorite cover mirror my own. I usually like what is coming up better than the last. I like that kind of build up for each new issue. I do have to say, though, that for an overall tie-in to the story the covers to #1 and #7 are real favorites of mine. And no teasing about a cover we can't see for another month!

I finally get off work this afternoon and head to the CBS (also Caroline's initials btw) to pick up my reading copy as my mail order won't be in until week after next. Anyway, I grab my copy off the shelf and a couple of other items that look good, pay and head home. Its about 5:00 and I'm stuck in traffic so I grab my copy out while sitting at a long light. And what do I find inside? My issue has two cover to it. I'm not kidding and I didn't dig for this copy, I just grabbed the first one off the shelf. Maybe its a sign.

It's a beautiful cover, and it really captures the emotion.
