Just a reminder to everyone that FCBD '08 is tomorrow. I would of posted a thread about it awhile ago but certain site problems have made me forget.

Here's what's gonna be there:

http://www.freecomicbookday.com/the_comics.asp

There's a couple of things I'd like to get (especially X-Men, Marvel Adventures Iron Man, Iron Man Heroclix, Maxium Ride, Tiny Titans, Atomic Robo, Hellboy) but as usual no comic shop here prevents that. I hope y'all get some good stuff though!

You know. Yet again DC really dropped the ball. What was wrong with giving away a reprint of the Millennium Collection edition of Adv. #247 to generate more buzz for the Legion's anniversary?

I looked over the list and...I am really disappointed. I don't see one thing I want this year. Last year, there were a half-dozen comics I wanted, but not this year.

THANK YOU so much for the reminder otherwise I never would have known! And I saw it when I just happened to wake up at 730am for some reason today, and peeked in on the board.

I was needing to go to the CBS anyway as I am 2-3 months behind on all my books, so I took $100 and off I went.

For free I got:

BONGO COMICS Free-For-All

X-MEN (Greg Land art- Yum!)

TINY TITANS # 1 (and bought 2 and 3)

DC UNIVERSE # 0

JUGHEAD

LOVE AND CAPES # 7

AMAZING SPIDER MAN COMING HOME tpb

Oh, and that $100 did not empty my pull bag... I told the guy to get as much of it as he could, and with discount, my total came to $99.99! I said, "You're GOOD!!"

And lots of LSH-y goodness in my purchases... LSH 40 and 41, LSH31c 12 and 13... ACTION 863 and 864... plus WALKING DEAD 47 *and* 48... I'm a happy camper!!

And BTW, I got to the CBS right before it opened, and there was already a line. By the time I left, the place was packed. Mostly adults, but a Happy-feeling-inducing number of kids, too! Yay!

X-Axis review of the FCBD: X-Men issue: http://www.thexaxis.com/minis/fcbd2008.htm

Best line:

<font face="Arial Narrow"><span style="font-size: 16px;">As for Greg Land, he appears to have put a good three years on [Pixie's] age. Now, the cheap shot here would be to say that Land's favourite sources of photo reference tend to be light on 14-year-old girls for legal reasons.</span></font f>
One for the "It's funny 'cause it's true" pile.

Lash likes his art & you don't...
SOOOOO,
you have to pull up proof that you're always right and his opinion is wrong & deserves your scorn & ridicule?
I thought we were all friends here.
I mean, I always love how you cut thru the crap & niceties in your posts, but belittling my Lashie's taste seems unnecessary.

I liked Land's art once upon a time - back before his CrossGen days when he actually drew rather than lightboxing from porn and Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issues.

As it stands, the lack of sequential panel-to-panel continuity in position and modelling (since he's tracing different movie posters for each panel, usually featuring different people), the complete failure to match facial expressions and poses to the emotions the characters are meant to be conveying, and the especially the constant pornface-in-lieu-of-many-other-expressions (especially for the female characters - this being what the X-Axis quote references) kinda overrides the prettiness of any out-of-context panel. Click that Newsarama forum link I put on "tracer" above for a ton-and-three-quarters of examples.

It's not only hackdom, it's actually illegal since he's tracing other people's photographs (and sometimes other artists' work - the Spider-Man on the Ultimate Power #1 cover is line-for-line from a Travis Charest drawing to pick one particularly infamous example). And Marvel HAS acknowledged this in the past - http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/preview2.php?image=litg/20061023/marvel_artpolicy.jpg

Ah well.

And the best one... the confession, as he teaches others how to <strike>draw</strike> trace.

And yes, this was a rant. I really hate this.

I never knew Land was that blatant. Does he not think that we all read the same stuff that he does?

I still like his art/"art". The Ult-FF trade I bought recently (with the zombie-FF on the cover, when I went all Marvel Zombies-nuts) was breathtaking...

And its not like I'm going to be supporting his art/"art" on a regular basis unless he gets put on SHE-HULK, FRANKLIN RICHARDS or AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE. Giving me an X-book is the only way I'd be getting one these days, and I don't see that happening on a regular basis.
