Loved this issue! The art, plot and characterisations were all spot on and, as with last issue, the colouring was simply superb! So it looks like Wildfire will be joining the gang soon - Hoorah!
It's a shame that this current creative team are off to pastures other after next issue, I hope they take our love of their work with them.
Legion Worlds NINE - wait, there's even more ongoing amazing adventures? Yup, and you'll only find them in the Bits o' Legionnaire Business Forum.

It's the AARP threat that keeps most of us in line (those of us who were members before the cartoon started, anyway).

d'oh! I forgot to comment on the issue!
I loved it... interesting, fresh take on Drake. A new side of Salu that fits but expands upon what we've already seen. A nice focus on a handful of characters; letting them really shine.
I truly love the artwork, too. The art and the coloring are extremely well-paired as well.

If I didn't say so already, I thought it was an excellent issue, with effective characterization and an exciting story.

The whole 'not a murderer' thing between Brainy and Salu felt a bit heavy-handed, but I guess it was needed, since they'd been portrayed earlier as callous to the point of seeming to celebrate killing people. Obviously, that wasn't a popular portrayal, and so now it's text that they *aren't* complete psycho-killers.
I vaguely remember Wildfire having buttloads of super-powers in his first appearance, being basically Superboy-lite, with size-changing and energy-projecting powers to boot! It should be interesting to see what he can and cannot do in this iteration.

Again, that's not to say that thoughtful and honest criticsm of my work isn't possible. It's just it's not on the net. What you'll most often see on most boards (this one excepted) is knee jerk reactions by "fans" who really just want something that makes them feel the way they did when they were 12. A little nostalgia every once in a while is ok, but adults in their 30's and up should be looking forward, not backwards.
Manoman, do I hear what you're saying. The artist has one job, and one job only and that's to tell a story. If the pictures are super pretty and fun to look at, all the better. Great art and not-so-good storytelling ability is one way for me to back out of a book. Full page pinups don't count for storytelling ability. Dennis, you've done a great job with the storytelling aspect, and most of the time the pictures have been pretty to look at. So, as far as I'm concerned, you did a good job and I'd be glad to see you come back and do it again sometime.

In fact he teamed up with someone he only knew from the net to go from board to board acting completely boorish. That experience kept me away from message boards and chat rooms for years. ANYWAY, I think that one reason we treat "celebrities" so poorly is that many have been percieved as being somehow unworhty of their fame. Tom Cruise, for instance is crazy rich, but some part of our pysche realizes that a huge huge part of his talent is looks "and he probably is a jerk in real life". I can't think of a memorable Tom Cruise performance since he danced to Bob Segar. The earliest motion picture stars went from a poor, bohemian background, occupation really, into instant fortune and fame and acted accordingly. So a part of us still is tittilated by Fatty Arbuckle's or John Barrymore's bad behavior. Plus their bad behavior lets us look down on them, dismissing their good looks as having been wasted on an immoral, airhead, junkie, drunk, mf. Notice that some celebrities hardly ever get critisized; Oprah, Bruce Springsteen, Morgan Freeman, Billy Crystal. Well Oprah is Oprah, but the others don't flaunt their wealth and good fortunes in our faces. (Hurray for young LaBeouf for at least trying to stay out of the public spotlight.) So I think that its not just 'wealth and fame' that brings out the bows and arrows, I think that it is the perception of 'undeserved wealth and fame' that makes us want to talk so poorly about them, but can't stop watching at them.
So what.

Finally got to read it too... though I'm not enthusiastic about it - I never liked the issues that focussed on one character, in this case Violet - I thought it was okay, as most of Bedards issues were. I can live with any non-kiddie, non-youth movement version of the Legion As far as I see it, Bedard did his job to "clean the slate" for Shooters run quite well. He wrote some characters out of the story (Mekt and his colleagues) and brought a very popular character back into the fold (Wildfire). He hardly mentioned the youth movement part, which I hope Shotter gets rid of altogether. He changed Timber Wolfs appearance and brought Sun Boy back to the team. Shooter certainly will go from there. I still think this Legion is in dire need of some origin and "history" - the Wildfire flashback was practically the first look into the sooner days of this Legion - and I hope Shooter will add the necessary flashbacks here and there. Dennis Calero did a good job as well, by the way. Sometimes his faces appear to be "frozen in time" - but I like the dynamics and think that he will grow to be a very good artist. Maybe he will be back on some annual or Legion mini-series?

Doesn't the president of Lallor look like Richard Nixon? It struck me last issue also - it's in the nose - or maybe I'm haunted by ghosts.
I really think Brainiac 5 has some dark secret in his past with that comment to Vi - "Do you really think I would murder a planetary leader? Do you think I would murder anyone?" Her expression makes me think there was some cover-up that she knew about or went along with.
That panel in which Vi appears before Randall, with her face blacked out, is probably my favourite. Very dramatic! There was a great sense of action and movement throughout the art and I loved the different light effects - light from electronics, or overhead lights, windows, opening doors and Wildfire himself.

I just thought she was sorry. Atom Girl likes to put on that she's tough--but Brainy can push her emotional buttons anytime he wants.

The Bedard/Calero issues have been a really great 'transitional period' for the threeboot. I definately feel like they accomplished a big feat in tying up some loose ends, expanding the characterization to answer to some reader questions, gave us Wildfire (and Tenz) and brough Sun Boy back into the fold. I'd like to reread all of these in a row.
For those of us who did not like Waid's run but are looking forward to Shooter, these issues are a comfortable transition with the characters.
