My thoughts...
Martian Manhunter -maybe I am dense but I oculdn not follow what was going on durning the whole story other then J'onn found out that there could be other green martians on earth. Will this tie into Miss Martian?
Creeper - great artwork, interesting premise
OMAC- great artwork, that guy is awesome he helped out on the superman arc with Pete Woods , ok premise
ATOM- a little hard to read the first time, but more enjoyable on the second. Everything made much more sense. still don't like Byrne, but has art looks great here
Uncle Sam and Freedom Fighters -again great art, story looks like it could be worth checking out, Father Time is one SOB isn't he
Shazam - wow, Porters art here is fantastic. Love the look of the whole thing.

RTVU2,
I was similarly befuddled by the Martian Manhunter segment. The best I could figure, he was having some sort of internal confrontation between his nice JLA self and his new, ugly, badass, self.
While on the subject of befuddlement, can anyone explain who Father Time is? Everyone talks about him like "Hey, there goes Father Time." It's like being out of school for a day and coming back to find everyone best friends with someone you've never heard of.
...but you don't have a moment where you're sitting there staring at a table full of twenty-five characters with little name signs that say, "Hi, my superpower is confusing you!"

On the subject of Martian Manhunter, did it ever say that the protaginist was J'onn J'onnz? I wondered if they are playing us here.

The only one I'm picking up is Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters... just to see what happens. To be honest, so far I'm not a fan of either these new characters or the art. Granted, the art has a cool aspect in that it's all neony and funky, but the anatomy looks kinda skewed to me, and I'm finding the combination a little distracting. I think I might like it better on covers than on an entire issue. Maybe with more subtle colors it would be less distracting?

Um. Blech. The whole thing did nothing for me. Even if I hadn't had Click Here For A SpoilerThe MonitorS spoilt on the news sites, I'd've been non-plussed with the whole shebang. IC Overload, maybe? Whatever, I got it for half-off thru DCBS, and still don't feel I got my money's worth. None of these bits made me wanna check out any of the ongoings. The MM redesign BLOWS. Maybe I need to give it another read-thru when I'm in a better frame of mind...

MARTIAN MANHUNTER: I though J'onn had plenty of potential as he was! Particularly with that 'maintaing several secret identities/lives' angle. There's tons of mileage in that! What's here doesn't immediately appeal to me.
And, damn it! I *liked* the bare-chested, big red X costume!
OMAC: Couldn't care less if I don't see another omac for at least a year or so. If ever.
UNCLE SAM AND THE FREEDOM FIGHTERS: Firebrand and Uncle Sam are featured here and really piqued my curiosity. I like the art-- though the colors were pretty murky... with the super-heroes brilliantly lit in contrast.
I hope there's a variety of political viewpoints on the team, as Firebrand's speech while hitchhiking is pretty ham-handed. And the driver he's addressing *is* quite stereotypical. Though it's worth noting that he *did* stop to give a stranger a ride.
Phantom Lady is approaching grotesquerie. But the last page more than makes up for it. Uncle Sam rolling up his sleeve... ready to get to work!
CREEPER: Still haven't read it. I might never.
ATOM: The aliens take over the president's dog?! HaHaHa! I liked this- though I'd still prefer Ray Palmer (who *might* be in the background, here), as well as Ray Terrill in the Freedom Fighters.
SHAZAM: Beautiful art. Does Chinese myth actually reference Fire Harpies, or is that Winick's invention? What I see here is enought to get me to pick up the upcoming-- mainly to see more of this art and to see what happens to Freddie and Mary.
I thought Freddie was becoming the new Captain? I hope that's a misdirection, as I really prefer him in his 'Junior' uniform (the best of the Marvels, IMO). He can call himself Captain, though. In fact, there's no reason there couldn't be *three* Captains operating.
Five Monitors? My first impression is that it's too Uatu the Watcher-like. How will this link up with Donna Troy, I wonder? Oh, wait-- by the time of BNW, she's already Wonder Woman, isn't she? Timing's getting a bit wonky in the DCU, huh? Still 42 weeks to go, too.

I've been one of those stating J'onn needed a change. I've grown to like him but basically he was a green superman with mental powers and a weakness to fire. I thought the guy over the years had developed into so much more. But they kept him stuck in the Silver Age mold. Sure we would get insights to him...but usually making him different would also make him weaker...or the Vision. I wanted a more alien look. Even suggested just his head being a bit more...well how it looks like. CHECK. I also wanted a new costume. Nothing drastic just a more modern take. CHECK. And I also wanted a new attitude. More alien. Still the same character...but not the Professor X/Vision/Superman thing he had. CHECK. Finally I wanted a name change. Just to the Martian...or Martian something else. Mars? But they kept the name. No biggie. Freedom Fighters? Interesting but...eh. Need a better hook. And what happened to the Ray I know??? (Priest/Quesada?!) Creeper? This is a character I want to love. But this read just like every other Creeper story. It was cool...but. Shazam? I am scared. But I also have complained for years that Billy Batson should be the only one with powers. The other just annoy me. Is there a Shazam dog now? This seems good but Winick always scares me as well. Yeah i'm also sick of OMACs as well as Spectre.

Finally got around to this one, I'm way behind in my reading. I'm afraid my opinion matches Pov. I paid half price for the issue and still felt I overpaid. I really wanted to love Niles' Creeper but it struck me as hollow. The other stories just didn't interest me at all (the less said about Atom the better).
This issue only had one redeeming quality. The Legion AR moment on the last page that, from the looks here, no one seemed to catch. Top of the page, center, just to the right above the Anti-Monitor's head is an image of Supergirl and Phantom Girl taken from the next to last page of SLoSH #17.

I picked this up mainly because ... well, I can't remember why. Something else else I read a couple days after it came out made me think I should get it since it was only a buck. And I finally got the chance to read it last night. I ditto everyone on Omac. Bleh. Art was good, though. Martian Manhunter was intriguing, though I don't really care about the character in general, and this didn't change my mind. I did notice, though, that the medallion he got from the DEO guy was different than the two he was holding at the end. Art mistake, or are there three? Freedom Fighters -- so-so. I didn't care about the team before, though I was a big fan of the new Black Condor in his solo series and "Primal Force." He's dead now. Thought I'd see what was up, but doubt I'll bother. Last page was nifty, though. Shazam may be why I got it -- to get a hint about the magic stuff. I really liked the art. But there are no mentions of Chinese harpies at www.godchecker.com, my favorite resource for things mythological. I'll definitely at least look at the first issue in the shop. Atom and Creeper -- Not interested in the characters and the art said, "Eh -- don't bother."

So what about the minis that came out of this? What do people think? We have threads for most of them, but what do folks think about THE CREEPER & MARTIAN MANHUNTER?
THE CREEPER by Steven Niles and Justiniano has rebooted The Creeper, post IC. Niles said he wanted to bring more of a creepy feel to the character. I don't know that he has yet. Jack Ryder gets shot full of some experimental serum and now shares time with The Creeper, a separate personality at the least. He's witty and clever, but I wouldn't say all that creepy. Justiniano does make it look good tho'.
Just spouting off.

THE CREEPER & MARTIAN MANHUNTER didn't grab me in BNW so I never picked up the minis. Uncle Sam & The Freedom Fighters on the other hand needs to be announced as an ongoing ASAP. US&FF and Checkmate have become my must reads every month.
