Dynamite's groovy pulp heroes team-up title takes as its premise a classic Spider story about a fascist takeover of New York, and adds other classic pulp heroes in the mix. The first issue focuses mostly on the Shadow and the Green Hornet (who has come to New York from his native Chicago in pursuit of a criminal), with brief introductions of a not-yet Black Bat and a not-yet Zorro and the Spider himself showing up at the end.

The premise is totally cool, and the book lives up to the awesomeness of the premise. Plus lots of moody-cool Alex Ross pictures.

I give it five collapsing pillars!

Grabbed that one at the store today. From a "glancing at art alone" standpoint it looks terrific!

I LOVE IT!

So after a crazy 9 WEEK HIATUS, I went to the CBS and bought half a G worth of comics to catch up. It's kind of overwhelming that I'm this behind. (Reason: moving)

The first series I started with: Hawkeye, by Marvel. Which says a lot since I had a lot to pick from. It may just be the best comic out there right now.

#3 was absolutely fantastic. Flawless writing and art that is chalk full of character, action, humor and chemistry between Kate and Clint. The perfect done in one to start my catching up and I give it the highest recommendation I can give.

#4 saw my favorite Javier Pulido come on for his arc as artist as Fraction does a two parter that throws Hawkeye into Mardipoor and the global villainy of organized crime. And it's also pretty much perfect.

It's hard to explain just how this series in. The dialogue is perfect. The art is stunning. The writing / pacing / direction is crazy tight.

Hawkeye is more of an Everyman than he's ever been...and yet he's more heroic for it, even when he's acting pretty anti-heroic. He gets beat up, robbed, tricked, etc. Like Bogey in film noir or any good crime protagonist, he is incredibly flawed and vulnerable but is always pushing.

But the very best part of the series is the dynamic between Kat Bishop and Clint. The chemistry is just explosive, providing great scene after great scene. It's worth $3.99 *twice* a month for that!

Elmer by Gerry Alanguilan Slave Labor Graphics

One morning, chickens all over the world woke up with human consciousness and the ability to speak our language. Things got bad after that for the chickens.

Humans freaked out and started murdering chickens everywhere. Some of the chickens - the fighting cocks - fought back, blinding, maiming and even killing humans.

One young man, Ben, who worked at a poultry farm, hid three chickens who he found cowering in his home. He gave them names: Elmer, Helen and Joseph, and helps them adapt to the new world.

This is Elmer's story, seen through the eyes of his son Jake as Jake reads his late father's diary. Jake has his own problems: he's a writer who can't find work, his sister is a nurse and engaged to a human being (a doctor, but human all the same) and his brother has gone all Hollywood.

The story is both funny and thought-provoking. I really felt bad for all the discrimination against chickens yet wondered how I would react if one of them were on my doorstep, asking for refuge. Obviously lots of parallels with human-to-human discrimination and hatred and also makes me think about possible human-to-alien contact - and I did have an uneasy thought about the two chickens in my freezer.

I also wondered if Gerry Alanguilan might have read the Legion story in which Proteans gain sentient rights. Alanguilan's story is much more developed, however. Highly recommended.

FC, that sounds totally offbeat and totally fascinating! Definitely on my list to check out!

I grabbed Manhattan Projects number 1 for a promotional 1$ at the CBS.

Look for it if you're curious! It is one part historical fiction, one part satire with Albert Einstein type characters, and a lot of action and science fiction. The art is good, if a bit sketchy, and is in the style of Frank Quitely ... who I adore. It reminds me of the Authority but without the super heros and the doing good thing. heh heh.

Best new comic find since I started reading Daredevil and Hawkeye.

Can't recommend Manhattan Projects enough. Smart, offbeat, and just crazy fun--science fiction & weird at its best. The series has also progressively gotten better (after a strong start) with each issue having its own "oomph" to make you sit up and take notice.

A 'must buy' for all readers.

The best series most people aren’t reading: Mind MGMT, by Dark Horse. From the genius mind of Matt Kindt, it succeeds on every single level. It is complex as hell and quirky to the extreme, but at the heart is a strong sense of mystery and fascinating characters. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Krishna: A Journey Within by Abhishek Singh (Image again!)

This graphic novel is without question the most beautiful one I have ever read. Stunning artwork, and very different from western artists. It's expensive - $30 - but worth it as far as I'm concerned. This is one book that's not going to the library donations bin when I finished it.

It tells the story of Krishna (which I didn't know much about) and also has, through Krishna's thoughts and speech, some Hindu philosophy. We are all one with the universe sort of thing, which I love. But it's really the artwork that totally captivated me.

The only complaint is that many of the pages are 2-page spreads and lose something at the seam. I've half a mind to break the spine of the book just to view the artwork more completely. It's too bad they didn't print it as an oversize, but that probably is more expensive and less popular.

$30 for a 300 page book? That don't seem so much. Graphic novel can't have near that many?

OK, so if I were to pick up one new series, would you folks recommend Mind MGMT over Manhattan Projects?

That's tough. For you Dave, knowing your tastes, I think you'd really like them both. I can't really recommend one over the other beyond saying both are absolutey A+ comics right now.

High Crimes #1 by Christopher Sebela and Ibrahim Moustafa (Monkeybrain Digital)

Haskell is a guide on Mt. Everest. He has a sideline - he also collects dead bodies who didn't make it up - or down - the mountain. Rather than lug an unknown corpse down, he chops off a hand, gets the fingerprints to a local cop who IDs them for a price, then calls up the family for a little extortion.

His partner is Zan, a washed-up Olympian snowboarder who's drowning her sorrows in opium and alcohol.

The latest set of fingerprints, when run through the system, triggers an alert to a very shady paramilitary group in the U.S., run by the usual sort of half-insane tough guy. They set off to Nepal with orders to find the body that matches the fingerprints, at all costs.

It's an intriguing opening issue, an unusual setting, promising lots of skulduggery and perhaps some redemption for Zan. There's a potential for the story to degenerate into a gun-fest in the snow, but Zan and Haskell seem to be characters who will rely more on their wits and local knowledge to outrun the spooks who will be chasing them.

Zan and Haskell... The "Oates"s to Jayna and Wally Cleaver's "Hall"s...

Now that you put the association in my mind, I figure Haskell could be Eddie all grown up and rotten.

I just read the first trade of Glory ... Enchanting.

The characters came alive. Can't wait to see what happens next. i love all the creative anime type characters. Riley is already one of my favorites.

I give it a very solid four Atmos'.



I also read the latest trade of Chew Volume Six , Space Cakes

This trade was more scattered than the usual collected volumes but .. it is FUNNY ... and was an emotional roller coaster ... plus Rob Guillory's funny Easter eggs hidden in his ornate pages make for a great comic in themself.

Right now I am missing Amanda Connor's Power Girl:



That made me chuckle.

A hearty recommendation from me to fans of great comics for Rocketeer: Hollywood Horror by IDW. Just a fantastic read all around, and I think fan of the pulpy 1930's will especially go nuts for it.

- written by Roger Langridge, the genius behind the Popeye comic.

- art by J Bone, a phenomenal artist similar to Darwyn Cookie with his own style.

The first story arc of Ghost has finished. (#4)

I really enjoyed it and will be sticking around. The first story arc has Ghost amnesiac and she finds out who she is in issue #3-4 and how she became the ghost.

I really enjoyed the story telling and the exciting conclusion.

It is not a "OMG I FING LOVE THIS BOOK" but ... I am pleasantly happy with the story, the plot twists, the character development, and the set up for the rest of the series. (which becomes clear in 4).

One of the great joys, is the ordinariness of her companions. Ghost herself is barley super hero, and the characters come of as chuckingly realistic.


Some characters do look a bit too much alike, and one or two issue may be a bit slow but, in general the series is lovely.


The first story arc ends with Ghost defeating the creature[s] that made her this way ... and launches a series where she hunts down all the others.

It was pretty good. nice everything all around.

Things get even more awesome in #3 when the narrator is revealed!
