You know Mekt, of course, and Holt was in the 5YL annual 3 reunion story.

As far as I'm concerned, they were boyfriends. Of course I had read many references (on the good ol' MBs) to them being romantically involved before I clapped mine own eyes on the issue, but I believe I would have come to that conclusion anyway. More recently I've seen other interpretations regarding the nature of their relationship.

What was your take?

Oh, beyond the shadow of a doubt they were boyfriends. How could there be any other interpretation?

Well, they were never shown *doing* anything that would indicate they were boyfriends. They never *said* anything that could indicate that they were more than just friends. There is actually no evidence to prove that they were a gay couple.

TMK were good at writing non-in-your-face gay couples. Actually, that's probably the only way they could get away with it...

I always saw them as a couple but they were said to only be assisting each other to cope with being solos. What's to say a relationship couldn't have developed from that?

Plus, LOOK at 'em! Throw 2 hotties like that together and straight or not, there's gonna be some ass-grabbing!

I'll agree with Dean that there was nothing overt (in annual 3, the only appearance of Holt as far as I know) re: the nature of H&M's relationship. However...

When you look at Ayla and Vi there's not that much that I can recall that points to them being lovers, either. It has been awhile since I've read the issues, though. Perhaps it's time again.

The difference is that with Ayla and Vi you get a lot of little hints over the long term, some of which were pretty strong, even if they never quite came out and said they were lovers.

I actually don't recall much about Holt's appearance, or his interaction with Mekt or anyone else. Once I get the chance, I'll go back and re-read that issue.

As far I know, the best evidence for them as lovers is the fact that they're hanging out at the beach together in the Reunion issue, and the fact that everyone else seems to be have brought their significant others with them. There aren't any "friends" other than Holt, as I recall.

Still, Mekt himself is quite the outsider in the Legion group. So, it's not inconceivable that, not having a significant other, maybe he invited his good buddy (and "adoptive brother") Holt over to have someone else to talk to and maybe stare at all the cute Legion chicks with him.

Crashing Comets! They're practically holding hands on the beach! How could anyone interpret them as anything other than lovers!

Now we REALLY know about Mekt & Holt, don't we? Sweet.

I thought they were boyfriends. I'm curious about whether or not Holt is a Winathian. If he's not, it makes more sense. If he is, you have to wonder what happened to his twin.

I never got that Holt was Winathian either. If both Holt and Mekt were solos, I would think they would have treated each other like a brother, not the more intimate portrayal that was present.

I definitely saw them as a couple, but it did cause me to wonder about Mekt's place in the scheme of things.

Here we have a solo, feeling alone and abandoned due to being a freak without a twin. Would he be searching for completeness with another man as a brother (as the predominant type of twin on his homeworld is identical) or for completeness with another man as a lover? If it was merely the fact of being a solo, I think he'd have wanted a brother-figure to "fill the void".

As much as I liked seeing Mekt finally happy and content in his life, I had a small reservation with him being gay (at first), because of the stereotyping and labeling that can easily happen when someone is gay. Years before we learn of his sexual orientation, Mekt is already perceived as a freak or "different" on his planet, and regarded as evil by the whole U.P. system when he becomes Lightning Lord. Am I reading too much into the story to see a subtexual parallel between him being evil and him being gay? The 30th/31st century would still have some sentients who would hate homosexuals (what will all the alien-bashing we saw in the White Triangle story, and even the Adventure era gender battles: boys vs. girls), it would still exist in pockets (where narrowmindedness and ignorance persist...).

I ultimately figured what TMK were doing was saying that by being true to himself could Mekt find the happiness and companionship he so desired. And that's a good thing.

I thought they were boyfriends. I remember being a little suspicious on one front though: holt has that long ponytail, which just visually reminds me of Sun Emperor, who was really tight with Mekt for a while. It just made me wonder; maybe Holt is a reformed Sun Emperor, maybe Mekt first noticed him because of that resemblance to the one person who was friendly to him during that period of insanity. They seemed really loyal to each other.

Also, a friend and I had a long discussion about why Mekt might go for a guy. We never see him interested in anything except mad plots involving his siblings, so no real previous evidence either way. But, as my friend pointed out, with another male, there is no chance of having a child, and thus, there is no chance of causing another kid to go through what he went through. He sees being a solo as a disease; the prejudice against it on Winath is a big part of what drove him mad. I'm sure, whether or not it's genetically likely, he'd be afraid of fathering a solo.

Did Holt have a ponytail? It looks to me like his hair long enough to tuck behind his ears but isn't quite to his shoulders.

Please remind me about Mekt and Sun Emperor. There are some holes in my collection.

Well, I don't have the issues right at hand (I'm at work) but I thought I recalled him having a ponytail... when I get home, I shall did out the issues in question, and give you an example of what I mean with Sun Emperor.
