Cali, I expect Hawkgirl (and Hal) to be joining the JLA. I'm actually hoping for that, and would be very pleased with it!
Would love to see Carter also in JLA, or even in JSA, then teaming with Kendra each month in this comic (each one at seperate teams in the DCU).
I bet Hawkgirl, Green Lantern (Hal) and Firestorm will be the first 3 heroes to round out the JLA with Bats, Supes and WW, before other members are considered. All (3) appear to be some of the major players during the missing year (along with Supergirl and some others) that we know for sure make it out alive by OYL.

Cali, I don't read Superman, so I hadn't hear about her quitting the JSA. It's a shame she did, she fit that group very well, sort of their resident loudmouth. That said, she could play with the Justice League and I'd be happy.
The new ish came out, and it was a bit disappointing. Artwise, Chaykin has certainly given it a unique feel, one that fits the creepy mood Simonson is trying to evoke.
The story is where this is failing. It's plodding, moving too slow to create any mood. Last ish's cliffhanger was rendered pointless. We get a couple of pages used to set up a poor piece of allegorical narration that doesn't advance the plot or give insight to our characters.
I feared the OYL jump would mean time spent explaining the new status quo, and this certainly fulfilled that fear.
Just spouting off.

I was disappointed in 51, too. The story and art are strictly so-so. Here's my theory. Someone high up at DC bought stock in a black ink-producing company. That would explain the recent spate of dark, muddy books, including Warlord and Aquaman.
And I don't know about you, but if I saw someone walking around bearing and gritting their teeth all the time, I'd tell them they should see a doctor. I've never seen so many teeth. Almost every panel is teeth, teeth, teeth. I laughed out loud when Kendra told Danny, "At least you still have all your teeth." Of course he does! He probably lost a couple in the original script, and Chaykin requested a change so he wouldn't have to draw missing teeth.
Oh, well, I'll give it one more issue. It certainly would be nice to save the $2.50 every month.

Well. I have bought, and read... This has the smell of a set up. This was all set up. The art was a bit shaky in parts, but I chock that up to Chaykin doing the new Avengers, Cap one off for that Civil War stuff. I like the voice this book has. Kendra really feels unique and there it has an odd appeal. For me at least.

I reread the Gray/Palmiotti run yesterday. Their first arc started out slow too. So in defence of Simonson/Chaykin I can give this book 2 more issues.

So far, not too impresssed. I would say it is the most disappointing of the OYL titles, but I just said that about Nightwing in another thread.
I like the "Indiana Jones" action-archaeology feel to it, but the plot seems to lurch along unevenly, with rocky transitions and reasoning, and the Chaykin art ain't turnin' my crank this time around.
Why are you laughing at me? It's unkind, as well as puzzling!

Okay so the new issue is an improvement over the first couple. The story seemed less choppy, simpler. I still dig Chaykin's artwork, it certainly gives this a unique look and identity. My only complaint is Kendra's always been a less endowed gal; OYL she gives Pam Anderson stiff competition.
We got a brief hint of our antagonist, but it sure feels late in the story for that. And other than a random crook scene, we get no Hawkgirl action.
C'mon guys, this is superhero stuff- let's see some mace-swinging!!!!

Unfortunately, with the recent ump of ALL titles to $3, some things have to be cut from my pul list.
HAWKGIRL is one of them. I liked Chaykin's art well enough in 50 & 51, but I've never been a huge fan of Simonson's writing (love his art though).
So this title has been officially dropped as of 51.

I loved Walt Simonson on Thor and Orion, but his Wonder Woman arc was a disappointment. This story-arc is off to a slow start, and I'm indifferent to Chaykin -- this could get dropped. Haven't quite decided.
"Gee, Brainy, what do you want to do tonight?" "The same thing we do every night, Bouncing Boy: try to take over the United Planets!!" They're B.B. and The Brain ...

This is a blessing then. I like Walt and Howard too, but this arc will be the death of this title (running longer than any other Hawk-title ever) unless they do something ASAP.
The latest arc...its almost getting unreadable.

I agree this story is not going anywhere fast, and all the excitment when Lendra first appeared has been killed. But I don't think it's the art to blame. I liked Chaykin's work here, it gave the book a distinct look, and it fit the gothy mood I think Walt was aiming for.
But the story has been slow, with too much time spent on irrelevant dreams, over-long exposititory scenes, and NO real villain. If this is the same guy that brought THOR to prominence, I'm surprised.

Man, are they trying to get me to drop this book?
Despite my previous post, I really have tried to enjoy this. For a minute, it looked like something interesting might be going on, but this issue was just totally not something I enjoyed reading. There was virtually no story, and the art was ... disturbing.
Even people who don't have Kendra's superheroine body still have to meet some basic anatomy conventions, and Chimaera just didn't. And those freaky pasties and whatever you call the barely there bottom were just not nice.
And what's with the teeth! Still the teeth! This isn't a 22-page toothpaste ad, Howard!
Oh, well, he's leaving, but Simonson isn't right? I just don't know how long I can stand this arc hoping for something better to come along.

It's almost like they want us to hate Kendra so we'll be ecstatic when Carter returns.
Gotta say- the worst book OYL.

HAWKGIRL 53:
Khimaera is one freaky lookin' antagonist. Her shtick reminds me of an old Star Trek episode, though. This was an OK read, but doesn't have me panting for next issue. I'm mildly curious about the new detective.

I do quite like Howard Chaykin as an artist and this "new" style for him has taken a while to grow on me - it's OK.
The story hasn't been up to much though.
I'm really only keeping this on my pull list because I want to see Carter brought back and I'm trying to add my support to the book so it wont get cancelled. How are sales anyway? Does anyboby have any info - I'm guessing they are not too hot.
p.s. Saw Howards version of Cap for Avengers 21 - it is without doubt the UGLIEST Captain America I have ever seen.
Be lucky

I think the story so far has been very deliberately paced but something is lacking in the storytelling. The issue with Khimera for example, every page seemed to exist in its own little world and not in a good way. There seemed to be very little in the way of panel to panel continuity. This only hampered a very obtuse story. I am glad that Chaykin is leaving. I think his new style or whatever is unsuitable for this title. Also I got the feeling he wasnt going great guns and never was from the start. Id rather a less seasoned artist take over the art chores that REALLY seemed to give a damn. I will stick with this title now that I feel a positive change is happening as apposed to one that was designed for marketing.

Drake, it might take a revival of Thor-like proportions to bring this title back.
Simonson has spent too much of each issue with idle chatter (this issue it was Kendra's chat with the surviving cop) and dragged the story out.

HAWKGIRL 54: Is the Hawkman with the tattoo covered body (or is that body hair?) the same as the one who looks all old on the last page? And are either of them the 'real' Hawkman?

Hawkgirl 54 was not only readable, but the storytelling made sense. Wow. Chaykin art actually working with the story this time, instead of impeading its progress. And hey, I actually enjoyed it for a change. I havent enjoyed this book since issue 50, when it appeared everything was gelling.
I cant wait for Chaykin to take a hike on this book. Simonson's take on Kendra is sound, and hes building up a credible supporting cast for the book. Having that reincarnated Hath-Set fella take over the museum is a nice touch. Its nice to see it come to some fruition. I think theres just too much subplot for this book given how Chaykin lays out his pages.
I just hope the new guy (whomever he/she may be) knocks it outta the park.
