But... his wings aren't actually attached... are they?! Sidebar: Three truisms remain for the worst thing that can be done to a character-- 1) Female characters are raped. 2) Male characters have someone CLOSE to them raped or killed; and 3) Winged characters have their wings torn off. How original... That goes all the way back to pulling the wings off insects circa pre-school...

I can understand people raving about the painted covers by Alex Ross, Adam Hughes, and the guys who've done covers for HAWKMAN, STARMAN and THE SPECTRE.
But in the 1980s, the guy who was blowing me away with this sort of thing on a regular basis was STEVE RUDE on NEXUS! In that case, it was the regular iterior artist doing his own fully-painted covers! (Somehow with comics that more "honest" to me. Back in the 70's, it used to bug the hell out of me when I'd see some gorgeous DAVE COCKRUM cover on a Marvel Comic, and the interior was by some mismatched team of amateurs who hadn't learned how to draw or ink yet...)

Its actually the cover for November.
And I, too, was curious as to all the blood and apparent ripping off of the wings. Does this Hawkman not have his wings attached to a harness? I've not read the title and don't know how he corresponds to the previous versions of the character.

Damn, that's rather gory to be the cover (though it's a nice painting nevertheless). I think his wings ARE just attached via the harness -- it doesn't look like they're a part of his body. (I was rather amused at how quickly he put on his costume in the latest issue -- I would have expected that it would take AT LEAST a coupla minutes to change...)
His chest seems to be bleeding as much as his back...

Yeah, I think we're definitely in a it more mature area of the DCU with HAWKMAN.
Or, as Johns jokingly put it at the Dragon*Con DC panel, "Hawkman makes people bleed a lot. You should buy it."

Wow -- that's a really powerful cover.
Regarding wings being ripped off, it also happened to Angel at one point (before he became Death or Arcangel with the metal wings -- he's since grown them back though).

well, if I remember right, that story is part two which Hawkman will face his new #1 enemy - as coined "Hawkman's greatest foe" - named Headhunter. I am curious about him, so I will keep buying that book! I collected almost all Hawkman issues. except 1960s.

You are correct, Supes.
I don't have all that much Hawkman in my collection, but if an Archive shows up on eBay for a decent price, I'll snag it.
As for wings getting ripped off, I recall an issue of Hellblazer where John Constantine arranges for an uppity angel to get worked over in that fashion.

Hawkman's wings are still just part of his marness. In fact in an early issue of the current run I'm pretty sure he even mentioned the fact that he doesn't actually need them to fly, they're just for steering (*how* he controls them is anyone's guess). It's the Nth Metal in his belt (and possibly the harness I think, but not the wings themselves) which enable him to defy gravity, which also means he can lift things much heavier than normal people. He's not inherently stronger, just the Nth Metal helps to defy the laws of physics. He's also said something about it stopping him getting cold as well (which is just as well since he's pootling all over the place topless. Not that I'm complaining mind.) Watson's covers are fabulous. And very much in the same feel as Rags' interior art, which is comething that is often lacking when you compare interior and cover art. Spookily enough one of the managers here at my work is called John Watson. I don't think they're the same person though.

Some interesting info on the guy who models as Hawkman on those painted covers... (hope the link doesn't screw up the margins too much) [Edited: The overlong link was deleted. Thanks, Grey, for posting the "shortcut"! ]

Here's a shorter version, Stu: http://tinyurl.com/on06 Everyone would do well to bookmark TinyURL.com ... it's a completely free service (they take donations) that only takes seconds to use. It's become essential for, as you say, keeping long addresses clickable and within the screen margins.

You know... the guy who modeled for the Hawkman covers kind of looks like Looks That Kill Lad, in that gruff, sexy shaved-head way...

Well, the covers for HAWKMAN continue to be excellent and interesting, even if they're no longer painted, and they even feature Katar with... **gasp!** ... ARMPIT HAIR! Good Lord!
But I want to focus on the actual comic itself, which I have REALLY been loving lately with the new writers and excellent new artist!
And the FINAL PAGE of the latest issue, # 37...
Another Marv Wolfman Travesty has been erased with the appearance of....

Hokey Smokes! I haven't been reading Hawkman since a little after Rags and Geoff left, but I've been stockpiling the more recent stuff after getting them from a friend who trades with pros for their comps. Guess I need to catch up... and check THIS development out! And I guess they're finally tying GE into the Hawkman mythos here? KEEN!

The book is just as fun a read, but slightly different than Geoffs' stuff, natch. I really don't know why it isn't selling better, after all, there are plenty of shots of Kendra's heinie, lol.
Damn you, you kids! Get off my lawn or I'm callin' tha cops!

Hawkman is probably the one comic I'm not buying right now that I really wish I had the money to add to my list!
I bought the first few issues of Geoff's run and wasn't very impressed but whenever I flick through Palmiotti's stuff I like what I see.
I love that all these cool old Hawkman villains are being dusted off and made viable again (especially Fadeaway Man and Lionmane - old faves of mine) and I'm supremely impressed with the artist - Joe Bennett I think is his name. His stuff is fantastic! As for Golden Eagle - that's just the icing on the cake!

It's not yet clear if it is Charley Parker, somehow Zero Hour-ed from his fate in TITANS HUNT. But I kind-of hope it is.
Even if it's someone new in the Golden Eagle armour, it IS about time someone donned it again.
I just hope he doesn't turn out to be a drug-hallucination, as Fadeaway Man had just drugged Carter.
Let's see... Duela Dent: check. Dove: check. Golden Eagle: check. Aquagirl: check. Marv Wolfman's attempted destruction of the old TEEN TITANS ranks is slowly being turned around by either ignoring that old continuity (Duela) or bringing in brand new characters (Dove, Aquagirl).
Now, if someone can fix Gnnark, please? And get Lilith and Donna back to the land of the living (not a Wolfman thing with Lilith and Donna, but still needs to be corrected)? Geoff?

Well, seeing as he was half-RESPONSIBLE for the last two, he better...! I looked at 37 today- that final page splash is SUHWEEET. I'll take some extra cash with me and catch up on the issues I haven't got stockpiled already.

Povvins, you definitely want the issues since the new writers took over, and the last couple issues with the great new artist!
The only Geoff issues that I *really* enjoyed were the 3 issues that featured the Thanagarian Hawkwoman. I'd skip over all other Geoff issues.
I checked the end of HAWKMAN 37 again-- NO WAY is Golden Eagle an hallucination, as he's kicking Fadeaway Man square in the face! YEAH, BABY-- HE'S BACK!!

Hawkman is one of DC's best ongoing series. It's been consistently excellent since the new team took over--even better than Johns and Rags I'd say (and I liked their run too!).
I've really grown to like Carter and Kendra as characters, and I'm glad to see a larger supporting cast come about (and Rogues Gallery).
Rick, I agree about the sex-appeal of this book for all comers, since both leads are hot and in skimpy outfits. But I like how it's kind of down-played a lot.
This book is highly reccomended!

I'm enjoying the book as well. I think the new team have made a few goofs (killing off yet another love interest for Carter comes to mind), but it has been good overall.
We're in a rapidly shrinking minority, though, since the books sales have dropped close to 50% over the past year, one of the biggest overall drops for a current DC comic.
At that rate, it won't last another year.
