Bouncing Boy was only able to do what he did in that story because they made him invulnerable.
Colossal Boy did fight Validus at least once before in that story where they had to evacuate a planet before the FF nuked it.
It was a great story though. I wish it had been the reboot instead of any one of the ones we got instead. Except with Gim alive of course.

Oh, yeah. I did hate Shady's costume though. It was more of a thong/muffler than a costume. You'd think Mike Grell designed it.

Man, that info from last year about when Superboy's Legion came out (between Lost and Worlds) really put it into perspective for me...It was like a beacon of light at what for me was a dark time. Cheerful teens! Colorful costumes! Genocide-free!
The only consistent feature of all of your dissatisfying relationships is you.
Don't judge me!

I suspect that Superboy's Legion at least partially gets a boost from the fact that it was an Elseworlds and a limited run. I'm not so sure I'd have wanted that as an ongoing continuity, and I suspect that if it had been it would take a lot more flack for various things.
One of the things that's pretty amazing about it, however, is the way in which they actually managed to use the large cast effectively. Pretty much everyone gets characterization, and gets something to do. Especially Bouncing Boy, who, as I recall, gets to save the day twice!

I then bought Worlds but didn't stay on with the DNA series I think I couldn't buy the idea of Ras Al Ghul in the 31st century.

I felt, and feel, exactly the same way - the story was really good but Gim's death didn't serve any meaningful purpose in it and was such a punch in the gut to Gim fans who were upset about his recent death in regular continuity. But I wonder if Davis didn't come to realise he'd made a mistake with Gim here and take some steps to rectify it? In 'JLA : Another Nail' a group of Legionnaires from the 'Superboy's Legion' timeline appear in a time bubble in our era. They are clearly the characters from this story and importantly, based on dialogue and appearance, they are obviously a little bit older than they were at the time of 'Superboy's Legion'. Included among their number - GIM! As Colossal Boy! So Gim did actually survive this story somehow - or at least was brought back to life. Knowing this might help you find re-reading 'Superboy's Legion' more enjoyable Gary, as it does me.

It's not that unknown for the first character killed in a Legion continuity to come back to life...

Other than the Davis artoork, I was underwhelmed by Superboy's Legion.
The childhood friend Exnihil never had.

I also enjoyed it to an extent, but wasn't exactly in love with it. Gim's death really put a damper on it for me too.

I was kinda impressed with how Ultra Boy got to develop from a hot-head to Legion Leader. I think that's more character development than he's gotten in all of WaK's run, or the run's before it, where he seemed to start out with some character, and devolve into a jerk.

I agree with EDE that this may be so popular because it was a mini, a elseworlds, and the Alan Davis art. I agree it's very good and I loved it. Just wouldn't want to see it as the Legion proper. I wouldn't mind Mark Farmer writing/inking with Alan Davis pencilling the current Legion.

Problem is, Alan Davis would have been off the title within five issues or so. Then we would've gotten some schmuck way lower talentwise.
Still "Lardy" to my friends!

I finally read this! Better late than never, huh?
I liked it; didn't love it, but liked it.
Davis' art had plenty of great moments but IMO it's not his best overall, a little too cartoony in spots (although I feel that Davis has never done a truly bad drawing, at least not among the one's I've seen, and I've seen a lot of Davis's work). In terms of recent Davis work -- say, from the beginning of this decade on -- I'd rank it above Uncanny X-Men but below JLA: Another Nail and Avengers and Fantastic Four: The End.
Farmer's story is fun but a little too frothy for my taste. I like some of the LSH Adventure era, but I prefer the darker stories from that time.
Big thumbs up for using the Fatal Five, though.
Oh, and I didn't like the way Davis drew Shadow Lass, but then I am very picky about how she is drawn (my favorite Shady is Sherman's.)

I thought Davis and Farmer really captured the spirit of the Legion within this two issue story, something that was missing in the re-boots,and ranks as my 3rd favorite version right after the Original Legion and the current Action Legion.
I tried to rip their soul out.I tried to make them forget Superman. But they won't.

A reread of this recently left me more underwhelmed than anything too. Despite being really fun, I can't get over the "its an elseworld's so we can get away with doing anything we want" syndrome. And I'm exhausted of introductions. Great art though.

Other than Cham's portrayal and Gim's death I loved it! I wish they'd do another one.

I loved seeing the classic Star Boy, with all of his Superboy-level power.
Ultra Boy becoming the leader at the end was also pretty nifty, as well as the Brainy / Lyle sibling twist.
Shady with darkforce powers, and being a powerhouse in her own right was a welcome touch.

Congrats to Superboy's Legion for being the winner of the All-Fatal Five LSH Cover Faceoff!
And for being generally kickass!

Y'know what was really *really* *REALLY* good? JLA: The Nail.
Someone in another forum just reminded me about this book and damn, do I need to re-read it. I think it was definitely the best of Davis' prestige format DC Elseworld things. Shame the sequel wasn't as good.
But it was amazing how quickly Davis got me to care about his characters in only a few pages in that book, and then I really began to worry for their safety when things started to go south for them all. The 'Elseworlds' factor helped in that instance. Normally I don't really care for those type of non-continuity stories but the not-knowing-who-would-make-it-or-who-would-end-up-like-Hawkman-or-Green-Arrow really added to the uneasy, edge-of-your-seat element here.
I should re-read Superboy's Legion one of these days too. Now that I've got a Gim to read about regularly again I should hopefully be able to get past his death here.
What's Davis doing these days? I feel like I haven't seen his work in ages. He's probably an exclusive or something at Marvel, is he?
