Getting the Axe:
DP Freedom Fighters JSA Allstars REBELS
and thats just what I remember, there are more.
I don't blame DC for dropping books that don't sell well, but I do blame them for not taking some of the advertising monies away from some event that's gonna sell well anyway and helping out some of these better books.
DP is the best stuff from Giffen in years, in my opinion. He took something that was horribly screwed up and made it shine. And in its place we get yet more Batman mini's. I read one batman book, and am waiting for Grayson to return to the nightwing role. I ain't buyin' any more. Just ain't.

Repost from Freedom Fighters thread: Originally posted by Cobalt Kid: Originally posted by Dave Hackett: To play Devil's Advocate, all three titles had abysmal sales records and were on life support for a while now. Of course, that begs the argument as to why DC didn't promote them more. Exactly. Especially when Flashpoint has been getting promoted well before it launched.Originally posted by Chief Lardy: IMO, the only way to "promote" a series as old as these are is to have some sort of "event" occur. This would probably mean another death stunt. Or to have Superman, Batman or Hal Jordan join up. Or a tie-in to Flashpoint like REBELS and DP had with Blackest Night. Now, one could argue that BN added the extra year-plus of life both have had that they might otherwise have not.
The point is, as low as these two books in particular are selling, would it be worth changing or cheapening what we love about them just to keep them going for (what in all likelihood) would be a short while longer?
Honestly, from the sales, I didn't think either book would last a year, much less twoish. I'm not gonna throw rocks at DC over this one. I'm dubious about Flashpoint and am likely only to get the core series plus whatever handful of tie-ins interest me. But ultimately, it's not that event that's pushing out our beloved series. DC gave them much more of a chance than Marvel ever would have.
Still "Lardy" to my friends!

And from the REBELS thread: Originally posted by Chief Lardy: Honestly, I think DC has given REBELS (and Doom Patrol) a pretty fair shake, given how much both have struggled saleswise pretty much from the get-go. I think if both were successful, Flashpoint would not have impacted them. The writing's been on the wall a long time. Marvel would've cancelled them after 4 or 5 issues. Edit to fix UBBcode - RB

Heck, maybe its me. They seem to cancel all the books I like, like Hawkman, resurrection man, hawk and dove, nightwing, Legion (many times over) to name a few.
I guess simply put, if it ain't the big five (supes, bats, ww, gl, flash) its on the choppin' block.
DC has been contracting its lines for years. new books dont survive very regularly. I know its an economic thing, and I don't blame them for that, but time comes to put up or shut up. Expand the line, go bold, back these lesser titles and make them luminaries in the line instead of just going to the well time after time.
My thoughts , anyway.

With the cancellations of JSA All-Stars and R.E.B.E.L.S. my pull list will shrink from seven to five titles. (Adventure, JLA, JSA, Legion, Power Girl). The All-Stars will simply fold into the parent group, I imagine. The R.E.B.E.L.S. characters will probably go back into comics limbo for a while.
The only character in all of literature who has been described as "badnass" while using the phrase "vile miscreant."

While I hate to see it go, I do feel DOOM PATROL was given a fair chance. I guess sales of the recent TPB were also dismal, so that was it for this version. This series was blessed with a Blackest Night 2-part tie-in drawn by Justiniano, awesome regular artist Matthew Clark, fan-faves Crazy Jane and Ambush Bug and a current crossover with SECRET SIX... and still could not sustain sales. I do feel Giffen's story got better every issue after some muddled early issues and the past few months the book has been top-tier excellent. Losing the METAL MEN backup may have hurt as well, since the Giffen/Dematteis/Maguire team has many fans. FREEDOM FIGHTERS suffered from it's first 3 issues being very blah. 4, 5 and 6 have been excellent but this is a case of too little too late. JSA ALL-STARS I had intended to start buying again with the drop to $2.99. Guess I won't bother. REBELS was just a huge failure, IMO, and was handled totally wrong. Also, it would have been more correctly titled STARRO THE CONQUEROR ADVENTURES, if I understand correctly that the last several issues involved Starro again, who was all over the first year-plus of the series. Also, alienating fans of dot-LEGION and dot-REBELS wasn't wise. Not to sound the bell of doom, but I'm friends with Chris Batista on the Facial Book, and a recent cryptic post by him stated that Validus was fun to draw (yay!!) and that it was a fun farewell to BOOSTER GOLD (Boo!) He did not clarify if it was just HIS farewell to the book or if the book was being cancelled.

booster seems to be holding on and doing well, and they say Dan is returning. Hopefully not to reign over a short stint and then cancellation at 50. I was admittedly worried with Giffen and crew back on the character, but its been pretty good.

Dan on art? That's okay by me, but I'm enjoying Giff and DeM way too much to let them go from writing chores--!

I've got to say, I'm disappointed there is another round of cancellations. I currently get REBELS, JSA All-Stars and Freedom Fighters. Of the three, I was kicking myself for buying All-Stars. The writing has been week, and the artwork is not my cup of tea. To be honest (IMHO) neither JSA book has been as good since they split the one title into two teams. So I'm not sorry to see All-Stars go.
And I agree with those who are annoyed to see 3 more Bat-books in place of these other titles.

Also apparently included in the purge: Outsiders. It is listed as Batman and the Outsiders #40, and has a FINAL ISSUE blurb. Not sorry to see this one go either. I hadn't bought this book in a couple of years anyway.

I wonder what/if there is a MAX number of DCU titles the company has a policy about?

Is that a DCU-proper comic or one of the kiddie line? That's why I'm curious if there's a max number of titles in each DC "division".

Haven't seen this mentioned here yet, but the First Wave books are all canned as well.
Nick Spencer also just left for Marvel, so the immediate future of THUNDER Agents is probably in some doubt too.
