That's what DiDio said at the Crisis Counseling panel tonight. Three major Golden Age characters and no more. From Newsarama :

Quote
Didio also repeated a sentiment he expressed during last year's con season, that he doesn't like and wants to stay away from Golden Age characters that have clear ties to World War II. Characters in their 20's during the war would be in their 80's now, and DiDio said, "Even though the intentions are good, 80 year-olds should not be running around in costumes fighting crime.”

Johns added however, that it can still be done with Click Here For A SpoilerAlan Scott, Jay Garrick and Wildcat because all three have special circumstances that keep them from aging.

DiDio said those will be the only major Golden Age characters still running around and active in the DCU.

"F" that idea. I don't understand why in a comic universe that aging can't be slowed beyond three characters.

so you're saying that Dan is stating that we will not see Uncle Sam, Liberty Belle, Tsunami, Robotman (Paul Crane - that is, if he's still alive), Hourman Rex Tyler, Sand, Hawkman (he's from the World War II!), the Spectre (yeah, i know, but it's a techniciality), etc.....No more of them in the foreseeable future?

I read it that if the character has a clear tie to World War Two then, no, we will not be seeing them beyond those three.

Well, although Uncle Sam's got a "Get Better" card, he was killed in Infantile Crisis #1, Hawkman's not going to be around, hence Hawkgirl #50, and Spectre's got a new host.

Most of the others - I expect not.

My views are my own and do not reflect those of everyone else... and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Hmm... I actually kind of agree. I don't really need to see World War II heroes running around in the present day DCU unless they are immortal or somesuch.

Now, having a book set in the 40s and featuring them would be nice...

Of course, there's still the question of why all these characters in their 80s have children in their 20s...

As long as they're male its okay, the females octagenarians with college age children don't work so good.

I for one plan on to be potent well into my second century.

Well, outside of Liberty Belle, Hourman and Tsunami, all of those characters have a get out of jail free card.

And I'm quite sure Uncle Sam isn't dead, since he's essentially as hard to kill as the Spectre until America ceases to exist as a concept.

I guess my big problem is why the limits? DiDio seems to like to channel Joe Q with all of these stupid "rules." Let the creative teams/fans decide what's appropriate and stop with the pontificating.

It's this talk that turned me off of Marvel for years. I fear DC is going the same route. shake

It doesn't sound like a rule to me, but a general guideline. And the quote above is that those should be the only "major" Golden Age characters running around. I think they'd still allow a few more if it made sense, but just not feature them very prominantly.

Yeah, I'd guess of Johns suddenly decides, "Oh yeah, I want to use Golden Age character X this month" and it's not completely implausible to do so he's not going to have a problem with it.

What about Sand, though? I at least hope he's still part of the JSA. Perhaps he wasn't mentioned because he stopped aging in the 1940s when he became the sand monster and is physically much younger now.

Yeah, Sand has a pretty basic get out of jail free card too. So I see no problems there.

Inerestingly, he's one of the few 'newer' JSAers that's from Earth-2 (you know what I mean, I realize he's not new since he's four decades older than I am). You know, in case any Earths are split and stuff laugh

oh speaking of Ultra Humanite - what about the Super Villains who were during the World War II? Will we see Johnny Sorrow, Ultra Humanite, the Wizard, Solomon Grundy, the Shade, etc?

well I think Ma's safe since she is already 80 years old, unlike most JSAers.

Oh, I think it's kind of comical.

DiDio: Absolutely no Golden Agers! We don't need 80 year olds running around in tights!

Johns: Well, except there's these stars of one of our major titles, who kind of have a good excuse to still be around...

DiDio: Yeah, that's right! No Golden Agers except those three!

Johns: Oh, and then of course there's the Johnny Sorrow, and the Ultra-Humanite, oh, and the Wizard, and we've kind of got Ma Hunkel as an important character...

DiDio: Oh, okay. But absolutely no Golden Agers except the big three and assorted other exceptions...

Johns: Uh, but didn't we hint in the other panel that we're not ruling out bringing back Kent Nelson as Dr. Fate...

DiDio: Oh, yeah, that's right. Well, still, we've got a new policy against Golden Agers still being around! Except the ones we want to use!

Whew. Good thing DiDio is keeping nonsense like old characters in costume out of comics. It was totally undermining my belief in the flying men, magicians and you get where I'm going. Several of the comments I've been reading coming out of DC lately seem to indicate a certain ambivilance to the more "comic-booky" aspects of superhero comics. Which are the things I like best.

I, for one, have no problem with the suspending my disbelief in regards to aging in comics. Sure so-and-so fought in WWII and should, in reality, be in her/his 80s. But like matlock said, this isn't reality.

I've had a story idea where a supporting character from way back pops up aged while the main character is still as young as before.

Didn't Ma Hunkel re-surface when Red Tornado made his debut in JLA 68 (Dillin-era)?

Perhaps a slight tangent but what about Alfred Pennyworth?
