Didn't Jerry Ordway just draw JSA a few issues ago? He drew at least one and maybe two issues of the 'Waking the Sandman' arc.
He's still great!

Yeah-- I know! Amazing when a "fill-in" turns out to be THAT good, huh?

I love the JSA. Probably my favorite book in all of comics since #1. I've NEVER cared for the JSA. Green Lantern? Flash? All these old guys are real hokey when you have the latest versions of these heroes running around. I bought #1 out of curiosity cause James Robinson was involved...the new Starman...and the Alan Davis cover. I thought this could be a real chance to get funky with this old team...update them. And boy did DC deliver! I even like the old guys now. But not as much as the new guys. The excitement I get from reading this title reminds me of when I was reading's Stern's Avengers as a 10 year old. I love how Hector Hall became the new Dr. Fate. I love Sand. I love the evolution of Star Girl. How Geoff brought back Hawkman...I love Hawkgirl, etc. I love how he uses old and new as well (one of the reasons I wanted him to write Legion). While I like the new stuff and new character with classic names...I have to admit I love Wildcat...and I'm torn by the Hourmen. Rex is just so darn cool. But I want Rick to succeed as Hourman. Maybe Rick may turn like his old man the older he gets. JSA is awesome!

He's certainly got the artistic chops for this book. I've long thought this book could use rotating art teams to better handle everything that gets packed into one of the epics. Having Kramer and Ordway alternate arcs would work for me.

I didn't like Kramer at first but now I do. I like his almost gritty look.
Ordway's arc in this series blew me away more than any other. If I had to pick one it would be him.

I love this book! I've actually been rereading the whole run, got caught up this week.
I'm a little lost on the "nothing gets resolved" comments. Any examples? I know that Geoff builds a plotline slowly (reminds me of the Levitz glory years), but as far as I can tell everything's resolved at this point except Power Girl, which I'm sure he'll get to.
I just hope Captain Marvel comes back (never thought I'd say that...) because I'd really like to explore Billy and Courtney's feelings for each other and how they deal with him being a sixteen year old one minute and an adult the next.
The only complaint I have at this point is the whole series is dealing with the JSA's PAST. Time to move forward--no more Extants, Mordrus, Ultra-Humanites, etc. I'd like to see a bit of a new direction soon.
The only consistent feature of all of your dissatisfying relationships is you.
Don't judge me!

"The only complaint I have at this point is the whole series is dealing with the JSA's PAST."
And to think, Roy Thomas was the one who always got accused of doing that too much. I suppose the difference is, Thomas tended to deal with obscure trivia, while Johns is dealing more with the previous decade's worth of character-destroying stories and policies of other writers & editors. I suppose when you have a whole generation of writers & editors intent on murdering the reputations of their own characters (IDENTITY CRISIS anyone?) you need someone who's fighting to go the other way.

Should be the first story arc in the upcoming JSA:CLASSIFIED book.

About the one complaint dealing with the past? I somewhat see that but it fits the entire legacy thing and Geoff is putting together a jigsaw puzzle quite nicely. IMO the JSA has never been this good.
BUT I do hope after #100 we may see some more younger members taking center stage. Jesse Quick, the Ray...a younger core perhaps. And to tell the truth besides Jay and Ted they have all been young. Alan is there every once in a while (usually very dramatically and I like it).
Maybe after #100 a shift in honoring the past and paving the future, etc. It would be interesting if Geoff can pull it off.

Gotta say that while i like the younger characters, the JSA is the older characters to me.
Alan, Ted, Jay, Carter, Rex...this is the JSA, man. The greatest of the great, i don't care WHAT they say about JLA.
Damn you, you kids! Get off my lawn or I'm callin' tha cops!
Something pithy!

I liked the original PG rather than the caricature she became post-Crisis. Incidentally, the new book JSA: Classified is going to deal with her origin in its first storyline.

True.
Though I think the most exciting thing about the new book is the possibility of different creative teams doing JSA stories.

Okay the latest issue came out this week. It closed the current JSA/JSA cross over arc. Feel free to read and comment on it.
I'm posting this because of it's numerous comments about the upcoming crisis. Some are hints, some are just commetns, but now that the secret is out, Geoff seems to be running with it.
Just spouting off.

So, something strange in the timestream in 1984? Something else else like Crisis on Infinite Earths, perhaps?
Interesting...

I'm almost positive that line was a direct reference to Crisis. Especially with the Huntress reference earlier in the issue.

I'm positive too.
Which also makes me very curious to see what Power Girl's origin would be. Considering DC's willingness to really do about 'anything' these days (the post-crisis 'rules' really don't apply anymore), I wonder if her origin will involve time travel/alt worlds/long dead characters/etc.
For instance (and I don't think this will happen), what if she's Supergirl from the future? Kara Zor-El still alive after Crisis? From Earth-2, which is why her past is such a mystery? To be honest, known of these seem likely, but they are all very real possibilities, once the lid of Crisis is opened.

I can't quite put my finger on it, but my enthusiasm for this title has waned. It wasn't just the last story either. This has always been a solid book, but never really reaches the higher levels with me. I had the same reaction in the earlier days of this title and I dropped it for awhile before coming back. This might be the "make or break" storyline for me.

I think JSA goes through a lot of ups and downs. Sometimes I doesn't work for me, but other times I get excited about what's coming up. Right now, I'm pretty interested in where things are going, particularly for Power Girl, but I can see where you're coming from.

spoiler space spoiler space spoiler space So when's the FREEDOM FIGHTERS comic going to hit the shelves? Or will they be turning up in the next couple of JSA's issues? In Khandaq, maybe? There needs to be a couple more women... poor Phantom Lady'll have to go to the rest room alone, all the time. Now who would fit in? Miss America? How about a re-youngified Molly Maine, the Golden-Age Harlequin?!!! She's got the government contacts (presumably)... and she must be doing *something* during all the time Green Lantern/Alan Scott's off adventuring with the JSA and/or the various Green Lanterns. It was fun seeing their cameo. Sort of overwhelmed the story, for me. I like Atom-Smasher... I hope he gets to redeem himself and shake off Black Adam's influence (since B.A.'s now in VILLAINS UNITED, I guess he's left behind the shades of grey for full-on darkness). Loved the round table and the interplay among the characters there... I'd like to see this more often. Doc Midnight came across well, I thought. Maybe he's due a turn as chairman sometime soon... Hourman's rage seemed almost out of control... the implications are not good, if this continues, given his (and his father's) history. It was a little detail, but I appreciated the portrait of the Atom appearing behind/beside Stargirl as the JSA went to announce their decision to Atom-Smasher. Was the Atom accusing? Forgiving? Beseeching? There seemed to be some sort of communication, for all that it was just a picture on the wall. Haunted portraits hanging in the JSA brownstone? Hmmm... So many characters are due some substantive development. Sand... the Hourmen... Dr. Midnight... Fury... Obsidian... Which of these might follow Power Girl as the focus of JSA Classified in a few months? I'd vote for Sand or Obsidian-- who would you like to see explored?
