What is true of Wildfire, Mon-El, and Element Lad that isn't true of any other pre-crisis Legionnaire? (of course, there may be more than one thing, but there's something specific I have in my mind)

Neither of their parents ever appeared in an issue of the Legion?

I've no idea if that's true, but it's not what I had in mind.
A small hint is that it is something that did happen with all three characters, rather than something that did not.

I feel like it's something to do with their leaderships but can't think of what.
All three... were both deputy leader and leader of the team?
(I have no idea if that's true - just guessing.)

No. I don't think Wildfire was every deputy, not sure about Mon-El. But the answer has nothing to do with their leadership.

They... all defeated a Servant of Darkness? (Hmm... I know both Wildfire and Element Lad did but I think Mon-El didn't. and Star Boy (and Yera, who wasn't a pre-Crisis Legionnaire) also took one out each...) But does it have something to do with their powers or use of same?

That's not it. And it's nothing that has specifically to do with their powers, or their use.
Another hint: each "event" took place in a single issue, a different one for each character, published over quite a few years.

Just to add to the above hint, I think these "events" would be pretty familiar to most Legion fans who know the pre-crisis era. They're not particularly obscure or anything.

Blanking on this right now. I'll hazard a guess and say it was somebody they fought?

No, nothing to do with anyone they fought. For both Element Lad and Mon-El, this took place early in the Adventures Era, and for Wildfire it took place early in the 1970's.

Does it have to do with the fact that they changed codenames after joining? Not sure why Light Lass wouldn't qualify then, but something like that seem plausible...

You're on the right track. But it's a little more specific than that. There's a detail that makes Mon-El eligible (who didn't change his name after joining) but makes Lightning Lass, Lightning Boy, or Triplicate Girl (who all apparently did change their names after joining) ineligible.
I'll give it a short time longer to see if anyone gets it precisely.

They didn't reveal the precise nature of their powers when they tried out?

Hmm. That is true, though it's not what I had in mind. I suppose you could argue that it's also true of Sensor Girl. But you've hit upon the other element of the answer - it has to do with their tryouts.
So it's just a matter of putting together part of EDE's answer with part of CMK's answer...

They tried out with a different name than they used for most of their Legion career?

That's it. With Mon-El, this was after he was already a member, and with Wildfire he'd gone to his familiar name by the time he actually joined, but all three did their try-out with a name (ERG-1, Marvel Lad, Mystery Lad) that they basically never used again.

It is Furball. "Frisky" was the name given him by Aria Campbell when they first met.

OK, probably a pretty easy one...which three Legion girls pretended to fall for and compete over Jimmy Olsen in order to help him win points with Lucy Lane?
