Nope, not Kinetix or Matter-Eater Lad.
HINT: In response to this story, the Legionnaire retorts by pointing out that it was "about the time" the person who relates the story sat on an unprotected grid, setting his or her pants on fire.

I think we must be going through the same back issues right now, EDE.
Preboot, what future villain was once a student at the Naval Academy of Amadus?
(I hope this hasn't been asked before, I have missed huge swaths of this thread and can't really go back through them all.)

Yeah, I'm currently reading v4 (as if other recent questions and threads didn't make this obvious!)
Hmm... I know a certain second-string hero who was a student at Amadus, but I can't think of any villains.

Ok, good. I've been sitting on a question so I finally get to ask it.
I like to play chess. I know of (at least) 5 Legionnaires who play chess. Tell me their names, and tell me how we know they play chess.

Actually lancerealm was way off. The true answer is JO#76 "Jimmy's Legion Romances." It is unclear whether or not Imra lied at the time.

that's right. I knew I read that recently, but couldn't remember where. It almost sounded Gerry Conwayish... threw me off.

hmmm... I smell a conspiracy.
Brains function on itty bitty electrical bursts, right? Proty manipulated the part of her brain that realized the truth! Every time she realized, he'd see it in her eyes (no one ever said she was a good actor), and he gave her a minute zap to erase her short-term memory! It happened so often, that she effectively had a Pavlovized lobotomy on the entire subject.

The most obvious is Brainiac Five, who defeated the Legion computer at 3-d chess as one of the "Eight Impossible Missions", as I recall. I'm sure we've seen other Legionnaires playing 3-d chess, but I don't recall who.

Oops - I'm sorry. I thought the response confirming my guess was by the same person who posted the question. Since the answer has been posted, I guess we'll continue with the question I put on the floor. Ok? Sorry about that.

I think I may have committed a breach of etiquette here. Korbal asked a question which no one answered. It seems the right thing to do is to allow him to post a new question. I should only have continued with my question with his permission. Can I get a judgement from a moderator, please?

I say we proceed with trying to answer your question, since it's already on the table. If Korbal returns and wants to claim his right to ask another question (which is the ordinary procedure the case of unanswered questions), we can pick up the game with that.

I recall a few occasions where Legionnaires were playing a holographic D&D-type game. Sun Boy vs Star Boy (around the Great Darkness Saga) Polar Boy vs Timber Wolf (on a Legion Who's Who cover) Is this what you had in mind?

Kid Quislet, one of your guesses is correct - but not for the reason you mention. Eryk got the obvious one - Brainiac 5. There was a scene though, that depicted 2 Legionnaires playing chess - the scene ended with one Legionnaire knocking the board over. There was another scene - years later - where one Legionnaire says to another "Chess tonight? I've got a new opening move to try out." I hope these are hints enough; I've certainly stalled the game long enough.

Lancesrealm, I can see the "Chess tonight" scene clearly in my mind. I believe it's from the Who is Sensor Girl arc, between Chameleon Boy and Timber Wolf (I may be off on one of them), after they try to change the subject when they discover SG might be eavesdropping.
I'm blanking on the other clue, however.
