I think it was Tharok who got the costume change. Didn't he have shorts when he was first introduced in Adv. #352 and then he had a yellow leg on his costume in Superboy #190?

Dr. Regulus got a new helmet in Superboy 191.

From the introduction to Legion Archives #11:

One notable point about that job [SUPERBOY #191]: it showed the first signs of my tendency to tinker with costumes. I played around a bit with Dr. Regulus's armor. I don't think anybody noticed.

And the most notable change was indeed the more sleeker, more rounded helmet design, which also became standard in future depictions of Regulus's armor.

Tharok was indeed bare-legged in his first appearance, but he had donned pants well before Dave first drew him. He actually seems to make the switch between the two issues that introduce Shadow Lass. This may also originally have been a colorist's error that stuck.

I'm going to assume that my answer was close enough.

While we're on the subject of Dave Cockrum, I can think of 4 Legionnaires who were miscolored in some way, each in a different story drawn by Dave. Name them.

Hmmm...

I know M-E Lad was in one story for sure. And I think Cham in another.

Now I gotta go reread the Legion backups in Superboy. Darn you Jim! wink laugh wink And welcome back to the future!

Wow, my wild guess wasn't so far off -- I was right about a helmet, but not which villain.

Not only that, you were the first to realize that it wasn't necessarily a Legionnaire I was talking about!

You're welcome, Craig. Those are great stories to reread, just to feast your eyes on Dave's art. I'd forgotten about one of the ones you mentioned, so that makes it 5!

5 miscolored Legionnaires, ah ah ah

Hey sboymd,

That's right! Now that you mentioned Colossal Boy, I can picture the panel you are referring to!

And I almost just misspelled Colossal Boy. If that's not a sign we need Gim back, I don't know what is! ColossalBoy

You're just guessing, aren't you?

no (unless you're talking about Gim's new costume being orange for one issue and red thereafter)
yes, but what was miscolored and when?

no
no

I am going from memory, so there may be others besides the 5 I have in mind. Don't know if Colossal Boy qualifies for sure or not.

oh gee...I only guessed the last one...but I do remember seeing Colossal Boy's costume kept miscoloring by red and blue alternatively...for instance, his boots were supposed to be blue but miscolored red in few pages.

As for Matter-Eater Lad and Chameleon Boy, oh boy....proably in Superboy #193...or 195? the one where four Legionniares were shown with new costumes (Karate Kid and Shrinking Violet, and Duo Damsel)....Matter-Eater Lad's miscolored costume were red, not green, and yellow. As for Chameleon Boy - shoulder's was colored yellow instead of purple.

As for Ultra Boy, I dunno.

so that leaves us three more Legionniares - so my GUESS smile are: Invisible Kid, Braininac 5, and Saturn Girl.

Chameleon Boy's shoulders were not changed to yellow with a purple costume until much later. There's something else miscolored on Cham in the Cockrum era.

As for your other guesses, I'm not confirming or denying any of them unless you can tell me specifically what was miscolored and when. Otherwise everyone will just keep guessing Legionnaires until the correct 5 are named, and where's the fun in that?

Ones I know for sure, since I just went through Dave's issues:

I'll go with: Ultra Boy, Matter-Eater Lad, Chameleon Boy, Dream Girl, and Princess Projectra (with Lightning Lad as an alternate):

Superboy 184, page 4 panel 6 (and again on the next page): Ultra Boy's belt is brown instead of green, shorts are yellowish(??) and pant legs are red instead of green. [Linked Image]

Superboy 191, page 1 panel 1: Dream Girl is in purple instead of white. I'm assuming she's supposed to be in her uniform, because everyone else is. [Linked Image]

Superboy 193, page 2, panel 3: Matter-Eater Lad's uniform is red where it should be green. [Linked Image]
Also, Chameleon Boy has yellow skin throughout the story instead of orange. ChameleonBoy

Superboy 195, page 1 panel 1 (and again on page 5 panel 1): Princess Projectra's costume seems to have changed from her Adventure days, but the colorist appears to have put blue where her skin should be (shoulders). At any rate, it appears the colorist "went over the lines". **I'm not too sure about this one.** [Linked Image]
And on page 6 panel 2 it appears Lightning Lad's uniform has been colored blue above the bolts on his chest, but should be white. ColossalBoy

These are 3 of the ones I had in mind, though your other choices certainly fit the criteria. Matter Eater Lad also appears with brown hair instead of black in #184 and Dream Girl's legs are left white in #190.

There are two other miscolored members that no one has spotted yet from this era. Can anybody spot them or should I spill the beans?

I'm out of here for the day and probably won't be back until Monday, SOOoooOOOOoo the answers are:

Superboy 184: Saturn Girl's new costume is red in some panels and pink in others. It was originally red with a white collar (Act. 392). In the middle of this issue it suddenly turns to pink and in some panels the white collar is replaced with bare skin. Apparently the pink color was preferred, because Saturn Girl's costume is pink from her next appearance on.

Superboy 190: Can't believe nobody spotted this one. On the splash page, Shadow Lass's upper body has white skin, while her legs are blue. I believe in a later panel, her skin is still white and her headband is green.

Omni Craig, I think the next question should be yours. Take it away, young man.

Hmm... well, in addition to Jo's miscolored costume in Superboy 184, his hair appears to be strawberry-blonde in most of the panels.

I think Ultra Boy also had red hair in some panels of this story.

Another one I doubt you were counting. On the classic and immortal Bouncing Boy/Duo Damsel wedding two page centerfold, Chlorophyll Kid's costume is in all white. Chloro was only a Sub Legionnaire at the time though...

Oops is right. I posted on to the next page and never looked back. Thanks for telling me Jim. I'd have gone home tonight to look through more Cockrum issues, and you'd already gave the answers you were looking for.

Hmm... a question? Here's a relatively easy one:

Name two people who tried to usurp Matter-Eater Lad's place in the Legion.
