Thirtieth album? Sounds like a group I should know, but, at the moment I'm stumped.

- They had a top 40 UK entry with a Kinks cover in the late 1980s.
- They were a favourite of legendary DJ John Peel who said of them 'They are always different, they are always the same.'
- Our constant member spent two night in jail following a fight on stage with two other band members, that carried on after their NY gig.

Yay! It's Mark E. Smith's The Fall!
The lyrics above were from Telephone Thing and concerned yet another attempt by government to spy on it's population. Still just as topical in recent weeks.
The Kinks cover was Victoria.
Zenith artist Steve Yeowell was a fan and so one of their characters (Penny, I think) has the badge. In a nice bit of synchronicity Zenith has roots in the Lovecraft mythos and that Lovecraft was also a big favourite of Smith.
The fight in New York reduced the band to two members I think. A pretty disastrous tour, but then they've had over 40 band members, so how long would anyone have lasted anyway?
Over to you Fanfic Lady as I go back to my usual musical ignorance.

And a wonderful version of "Victoria" it was. I actually prefer it to the original.
Continuing the theme of covers, the song "Hanging on the Telephone" was covered by Blondie and turned into a big hit. Much later, there was an unlikely but delightful cover version by Def Leppard on their criminally overlooked all-covers album, "YEAH!" What's the name of the group that originally recorded "Hanging on the Telephone"?

Dang, another one I don't know! (And I would never have gotten The Fall because I'd never heard of them.)
I know "Hanging On the Telephone," but I didn't realize it didn't originate with Blondie.
Clue time?

The name of the group can be defined as: "A person's mental state, in particular the extent to which they are agitated or worried."

Another group I'd never heard of. I just went by the definition.
What US Top 30 hit was inspired by an assault on a famous television journalist?

Hee. That's one of the few songs on the "Monster" album that I like.
What did Siouxsie and the Banshees have in common with Spinal Tap? Hint: The phrase "...like other people change their socks" comes to mind.

I was going to say that they go through a lot of drummers, but Budgie was/is their drummer, so is it guitarists?

Siouxsie and the Banshees were indeed to guitarists as Spinal Tap were to drummers. The floor is yours, Thothkins.

Speaking of Siouxsie and the Banshees and their guitarists, one of them is much better known as part of another band. Name him and the single The Banshees released as this member wanted to have something to remember it all by.

The guitarist was Robert Smith of the Cure, the single was a cover of the Beatles' "Dear Prudence."

I added the last part of the question, in case anyone said Sid Vicious. I can't remember if he was a drummer associated with them or guitarist.
Over to you Milady of Fanfic.

It's well known that Mott the Hoople had their commercial breakthrough when David Bowie gave them the song "All the Young Dudes". It's not so well known that he had originally offered them a different song, which they turned down. Bowie recorded it himself, and it became one of his signature songs. What is the title of this song?

Speaking of Mr. Bowie, what MTV VJ appeared in a video of his before MTV launched. Bonus: What video did said future VJ appear in?

You're close, thothy.
Two hints:
the VJ in question was the first VJ to appear on screen when MTV launched.
The video in question also featured a future Saturday Night Live bandleader.
