In particular, they've all recorded the song I'm Down.

Heart is who confirmed it for me. I knew Aerosmith, Beastie Boys and Yes had done covers but the only one Heart has done was I'm Down.
Next question:
Who was responsible for writing the soundtrack to the movie Local Hero?

[interlude] I've got another question for the wise and all-knowing music aficionados of Legion World. You know the song in that classic Coke commercial -- "I want to teach the world to sing, in perfect harmony," etc.? I was at a store the other day, and heard the song being played over the speaker system -- only it wasn't the actual Coke jingle. There were definitely different words (though the same music), but unfortunately I couldn't quite figure out what they were singing. Does anyone know the name and origins of the actual song that the Coke jingle is based on? Thanks! [/interlude]

From www.guntheranderson.com: I'd like to build the world a home And furnish it with love Grow apple trees and honey bees And snow white turtle doves I'd like to teach the world to sing In perfect harmony I'd like to hold it in my arms And keep it company I'd like to see the world for once All standing hand in hand And hear them echo through the hills For peace throughout the land That's the song I hear I'd like to teach the world to sing In perfect harmony I'd like to teach the world to sing In perfect harmony

Done / covered by the New Seekers in the mid 70's if I'm not mistaken.

Damn, hadn't noticed that I'd got that one right, earlier on. Sorry, got all lost with the new layout of all the threads.
I'll be back with one later on.
(The reason that I knew the Local Hero Q was 'cos part of the film takes place in a little village up the east coast of Scotland called Pennan. It had, at the time, the most famous telephone box in Scotland.)

Thanks! What sweet lyrics -- very evocative of a certain era. Then again, so was that particular Coke commercial... one of the truly "classic" ones, IMO.

Some more trivia about our favorite soda pop song:
Oddly enough, "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing (in Perfect Harmony)" -- the full title -- was a hit for two different artists at the same time. According to Joel Whitburn's The Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits (1983 ed.), the song first entered the Top 40 on Dec. 11, 1972, by a group called the Hillside Singers. One week later, the New Seekers' version entered the chart and soon reached # 7, eclipsing the Hillside Singers, who stopped at # 13. Both versions of the song fell out of the top 40 at the same time, it seems, the Hillside Singers after 10 weeks, the New Seekers after nine.

Okay - set the scene:-
7th July 1991, Milton Keynes Bowl. Scorching summers day, many people getting drunk and falling asleep in the sun.
My wife and I were at a "Festival" gig with ZZ Top headlining, Bryan Adams 2nd, Thunder and the Quireboys(?) bringing up the rear.
Then we found out that a band that we had never heard of had slipped into the middle of the running order. Considering ourselves fairly well up on what was going on in the rock world, we were a tad confused, as was everyone that we heard talking about it.
We reckoned that it must have been some up-and-coming pretty boy American band. We were wrong.
When they finally hit the stage the crowd went wild!!!!!!!
The band was called "The Law".
The question is - who were the singer and drummer in the band who more than justified the inclusion so far up the listings, even though no-one had heard of the band?

Well, I was thinking of John Young, who also played for Uli John Roth, Greenslade and Mammoth amongst others....
Nah, you're absolutely right. I believe that might have been their one and only gig..... You guys are just too good for me.
Your go, He Who..........

I don't know how many gigs The Law did, but they did release an album. I remember it was fairly big news at the time. They were touted as another supergroup, and, like most supergroups, they didn't last long.
I'll be back later with a question.

OK, it's later.
Stevie Wonder is known for many things, but not generally for political protest songs. Nevertheless, he allegedly got in some digs at Richard Nixon on which major hit?

Looks like it's clue time.
The song in question also mentions the Jackson 5, who sing backup on it.

You got it, Miner.
I was starting to get worried. As diverse as we are, musically, surely we must have some Stevie Wonder fans!

[/b]BL - I must confess that I don't know much about UJR at all. (I read the connection on a website.) Slight Scorps fan - mostly early 80s Lovedrive / Animal Magnetism etc. (Saw them opening for Roger Waters in Berlin as the Surrogate Band.) I managed to see Schenker a couple of times in the 80s, once headlining and once supporting Whitesnake. He may be mad as a snake, but he's well worth seeing.

OK, this is inspired by the Schenker reference.
At a gig fronting the Michael Schenker Group in Sheffield, a drunken Graham Bonnet exposed two things. The first is obvious if you're aware of the Jim Morrison-Miami incident. What was the second?
