The name of Walt's adopted baby in "Gasoline Alley" was Skeezix. I assume this was a play on the word 'skeezicks' which meant rascal or ne'er-do-well.

Name is correct; my source gives a different meaning for the name, though. Try again?

Well, sir, if you insist. Skeezix - A small fairy believed to like playing tricks on people. I hope this is closer to the denotation that you were looking for.

OK, I don't know where I read this, but if it's wrong I'll give up for a while.
Skeezix- A person with a large head.

I can't seem to let this go. Skeezix- fanciful; meaningless.

Still not it. Hint: it had to do with why he'd been left on a doorstep.

Was it derived from the sound he made when he was snoring: S-K-Z-X?

My only guess would be that it has something to do with mosquitos.

Oh, I used to know this. Is it something like "orphan" or "foundling"?
The only character in all of literature who has been described as "badnass" while using the phrase "vile miscreant."

No... it does have to do with being orphaned, but it's a particular phrase -- and species -- I'm looking for.

I have a source claiming that "Skeezix" is cowboy slang for a motherless calf - would that be what you're looking for?

A "skeezix" is indeed a slang term for a motherless calf... so since Downunder Lad just guessed it before I posted the answer, it's his question!
