The name of Walt's adopted baby in "Gasoline Alley" was Skeezix. I assume this was a play on the word 'skeezicks' which meant rascal or ne'er-do-well.

Name is correct; my source gives a different meaning for the name, though. Try again? smile

Well, sir, if you insist.

Skeezix - A small fairy believed to like playing tricks on people.

I hope this is closer to the denotation that you were looking for.

OK, I don't know where I read this, but if it's wrong I'll give up for a while.

Skeezix- A person with a large head.

I can't seem to let this go.

Skeezix- fanciful; meaningless.

Still not it. Hint: it had to do with why he'd been left on a doorstep.

Was it derived from the sound he made when he was snoring: S-K-Z-X?

My only guess would be that it has something to do with mosquitos.

Is it something like "orphan" or "foundling"?

No... it does have to do with being orphaned, but it's a particular phrase -- and species -- I'm looking for.

I have a source claiming that "Skeezix" is cowboy slang for a motherless calf - would that be what you're looking for?

A "skeezix" is indeed a slang term for a motherless calf... so since Downunder Lad just guessed it before I posted the answer, it's his question!
