The introduction of Kara to this book has really kicked it into gear. I liked this issue, and loved the art! Sometimes I think fill in artists just can't catch a break, since they're not the regular series guy (I'm a big fan of Kitson, too, don't get me wrong!). DeKraker has a completely different style, but I liked it quite a bit. The colors took some getting used to, and seemed to fight the rest of the art a bit at first, but I really grew to like those, too. I'm looking forward to the next issue already.

DeKraker has worked on the Legion before, hasn't he? Did he do the Winath 'twins' story? He did one of those planet stories.

Anyway, Kara certainly is a joy.

I think that Brainy has the soul and the spirit and how they exist/intertwine confused, though.

I was a bit disappointed with the artwork in this issue. It's not so much the difference in style, though I much prefer Barry's art over any art being done these days in the industry. (He is the premier artist in comics today, IMO.)

My complaint is with the lack of consistency. Kara's face looks completely different everytime it's shown. The same is true of others on numerous occasions. I can live with someone's different style or take on a given character...heck, Barry's take on all the Legionnaires is different than anything we've seen before, but this almost seems as if a different person did each panel! It was very distracting and took me completely out of the story.

After rereading the issue and getting past the artwork, I found the story to be quite good.

Has anyone else picked up on the notion that the AI theme running through the Kara arc is mirroring one of the storylines in "52" with Dr Magnus and T. O. Morrow? And carries over from IC and the OMAC storyline? There were a couple of panels in the previous issue where I thought I saw the OMAC eye depicted in the underground gathering of robots. I wonder if they revere OMAC as a god?

Of course, it could all be delusions induced by my pain killers too! laugh

Can't be your pain killers, 'cause I noticed it too! At least, the part about the soul jumped out at me when I read 52 - will have to go back and look for the OMAC eye, though. This "soul" business strikes me as a real Grant Morrison type of topic - I wonder if it got into 52 or into LSH first?

It's been 18 issues, and I'm trying my damndest....

I love the art; someone needs to buy Mr. Kitson a cake, cause it's the only thing keeping me from dropping the title at this point . I sat down with the last few issues (16 - 18) and read through all of them, and everytime it just feels like I'm getting a fourth of a comic each issue. It's hard to explain...maybe it's just leftover feeling of anger about the reboot, but I just can't get over my feelings that this incarnation of the Legion leaves alot to be desired.

Okay, I take that back; I think this is one of my favorite incarnations of Gim, but that's about it...

I thought this issue was great. You could certainly see Barry's influence through the layouts.

Sign me up as liking DeKraker's art. (My gawwd, if you want to see bad fill-in art, read some late 1970s S/SLSH issues.) Was it less consistent then Barry's? Certainly, but Barry CREATED these characters. The sometimes-odd facial expressions reminded me of Maguire and BWA-HA-HA more than anything else, and that's certainly NOT a bad thing in my eye. The Legionnaires did a lot of snarking and arguing this issue, so the funny faces seem kind of appropriate.

The CBR "Buy Pile" reviewer pinpoints what's most great about this issue: the sense of whimsy (especially with Supergirl) contrasted the very troubling backdrop of 31st century earth. And that, my friends, is what the Legion really should be, in my humble opinion. A youthful, optimistic, often whimsical ray of hope into a dark, dangerous, often cataclysmic universe. The best Legion stories have always had those qualities. Mark and Barry are doing fantastic work, and the worst part is waiting 30 days to read the next issue.

...but you don't have a moment where you're sitting there staring at a table full of twenty-five characters with little name signs that say, "Hi, my superpower is confusing you!"

I thought the best line was when Element Lad asked "Why are we following Supergirl again?" Ultra Boy's answer was "Shut up and enjoy the view."

Does anyone have an idea how Brainy thinks Lemnos can help bring Dream Girl back to life? For that matter how could Lemnos bring Dream Girl back? Make everyone forget she's dead?

Lemnos has power over memory which is just stored information, so his power should be able to 'read' Nura's soul which is inside the force field bubble. The soul could then be transposed to a new vessel (maybe a cloned body but I'm thinking its going to be a robot because Brainy sent Vi for robot stuff.) Can Brainy marry a robot?

This assumes that Brainy isn't totally nuts and Coluan religion is correct about the nature of the soul. Of course if souls are really just data then Lemnos' destruction of Colu's accumulated store of data is on par with his destruction of Orando.

I like the iss. and I liked DeKraker's art.
One thing bugged me; Jeckie grew up as the princess of the wealtheist planet in the UP and nobody's ever asked her if she needs anything!?!
Uh, sorry Mr.Waid, I don't think so.

I for one *really* missed Barry's artwork. DeKracker's style suited the last letter column and the scene in Gim's apartment a few months ago, but an entire issue of it just didn't work for me. Kara, in particular, was drawn inconsistently and looked goofy at times. I found brown Tinya very distracting, too. I'm not keen on the idea that a colorist has the freedom to alter a character's skin color on a whim.

Storywise, there was almost nothing new except Brainy's disturbing admission that he gave Nura's ring to Kara. Dream Boy turned out to be disappointingly banal, imo. Maybe he'll sacrifice his life so that Nura can live. What else is he good for, except to foment even more political dissension in the ranks? Heaven knows we've had enough of that.

On the plus side, there were the usual great character moments. My favorites: Brin's conversation with Brainy ("So let's just pretend I care"), Garth's "necrophiliac" remark (which he directs to Element Lad, of all people), Kara's secret-identity game, the humiliated Ultra Boy pounding a robot to smithereens, and Star Boy's generosity towards Jeckie. What a sweet guy!

So, a middling issue for me. I doubly look forward to Barry's pencils AND inks next month.

Lil Rhino, I have to respectfully disagree about the the scene between Star Boy and Projectra. If you look at her character it would make sense. She may have wanted a ton of things, but it was clear she was never in need of anything except maybe some friends. I think that is a small difference but important with this scenario. Its like the poor little rich girl, she has everything she could ever want, but needs love.
Overall I thought the issue was great. I loved Cos' lines to Dream Boy about picking the exact wrong time to make his introductions. His costume is fun though, I like that the use of silver ( a nod to moonstone, supposedly bringers of dreams?) in his costume like there was in Dream Girls.
I loved that Ultra Boy was the only one to make such a loud scene about the robbing of the grave.

My nine year old daughter was mildly annoyed to find out that her pet theory wasn't correct.

For the past few issues she'd been checking closely, because she really wanted Supergirl to actually be Chameleon Boy in disguise.

As for the issue - yeah, it was okay - good story, nothing too much wrong with the art, but when you're used to Aberdeen Angus Steaks, then McDonalds just ain't good enough.
I guess we're all just spoiled around here.

Your daughter's cool. That would actually be a pretty good way of handling it.

I also thought the facial expressions were way over the top in several cases. In one panel Brainy is totally mad raving slobbering scientist and in the very next panel he's totally deadpan.

So Brainy can trap Dream Girl's soul, huh? What about her crushed body? What's he going to do about that?

I also hated the revolving skin colors. Is Color Kid lurking around somewhere? The artwork reminded me of Immonen too. In some panels it was quite good, others not so much. The final depiction of Dream Boy was just awful IMO.

I long for the day when the Legionnaires don't have to explain their powers every time they use them. Phantom Girl's exposition on what she did to the robot was totally unnecessary.

Oh yeah. The flight ring is turning into quite the deus ex machina.

It allows you to fly.
It protects you in space.
It allows for communication.
It allows for tracking.
It can be programmed to a specific person's DNA.
It can sound an alarm.
It can transfer data.
It can change your clothes for you.
It can grow to giant size and shrink to subatomic.
It can phase through solid matter.
It can change your appearance--who needs Projectra or Chameleon?

What next? It can make your breakfast?

We know from Luornu's experience that they can't split into three. (Which would have been a cool way to get around the expense of building them. Can she manufacture clothing that way?)
