I know this one has been one before, but I'm interested. Which versions of Legion characters by which artists are your favorites???

I'll start with my favorite Legionnaire: Tinya Wazzo/Phantom Girl/Appartiion. While I still LOVE her 70's outfit, I think the best rendition of her has to go to Coipel. I LOVE her straight hair, beauty, and grace he gave to her.

Which artists do YOU like best on your favorite characters?

Actually he did right by both the Nal gals.

Adam Hughes's Andromeda. love

Though he's not one of my favorite characters, Hughes also did a nice Inferno/Dirk Morgna in those few issues of Legionnaires he drew, as well.

Olivier Coipel's Ultra Boy

His Jo was so dreamy that it wasn't until after Coipel left that I realized I didn't actually like Ultra Boy all that much.

It generally tends to follow that a character design looks best when drawn by the person who created the design -- I think it's true of Coipel and Wildfire!

Even though I like the Cockrum Wildfire costume better, I don't think any patricular artist does it so much better than any other. But Coipel on his Wildfire redesign is just heads and shoulders above anyone else's.

Swan's Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl. I know perhaps the majority prefer Cockrum's costumes for them, but I have many found memories of the original costumes as drawn by Swan during his Adventure run and equally from before Adventure 300. Also Swan Sun Boy.

Though I like Ultra Boy's original depiction and costume in Superboy 98, I have to give the nod to Starlin's great Superboy 239's depiction of Jo. Short, but memorable.

Dave Cockrum did the best Duo Damsel.

Jim Sherman did the best Dawnstar.

Ultra Boy always looks yummu IMO laugh

I like all your choices, Matthew, but thought I would agree with this one particularly -- Moy's art captured Jenni's personality and character perfectly.

Marla Latham: Curt Swan. Has Mr. Latham ever looked as heroic and formidable as he did in that first appearance introducing Ultra Boy?

Catspaw, Computo, Dragonmage: Chris Sprouse. (Not a lot of choices there!)

I always that Greg LaRoque (sp?) did the best Dawnstar and Sensor Girl (he could really work a cloak)

Olivier did the best Brainy, Coz & Wildfire

Moy did the best Sensor as a snake and Gates

Giffen did the best Blok & White Witch.

I though Adam Hughes did the best Dream Girl

Oh yeah. His depiction of Nura on the cover of Legionnaires that also featured Thom and Chuck ("Guess who's back!") was certainly eye-popping. laugh

My favorite Shadow Lass was drawn by Greg LaRocque. He's the first one I noticed that gave her big elfin ears, which I kinda liked. She was also wearing my favorite costume at that time, as well.

I love this game!
How funny that that Adam Hughes cover with Dreamy had such an impact on people. I agree that it's one of the best depictions of her ever, but my vote for overall favorite depiction of Dreamy goes to Jim Sherman. I guess it was just the way he always made her impeccably glamourous no matter what. I should also say that almost every Legion artist has done their part to ensure that Nura looks right. Almost! Jason Armstrong let it go now and then, and TnT have just done a couple unattractive, and unfortuneatly high profile images of her.

Moving on... I'm gonna cut and paste Matthew's list and add my favorites for each character...

I have to agree. Batista is doing a good job maintaining her design, but he hasn't really added anything new or more interesting.

KID QUANTUM: Olivier Coipel [ after the buzz cut !! ]

Again, I agree. With the same remark about Batista's rendition...

SATURN GIRL: Keith Giffen [ 80's version ]

The artists who give her that classic look are my favorites, so that'd mean Swan, Giffen, Chris Sprouse, Adam Hughes, Jeff Moy and Batista.

COSMIC BOY: Keith Giffen [ 80' version ]

I like Lightle's the best.

GEAR: Olivier Coipel [ during the ROBOTICA arc ]

Definitely.

CHUCK TAIN / BOUNCING BOY [ Keith Giffen "beach ball" version !!! ]

Mike Nasser did a back up issue featuring Chuck, and has never been surpassed IMO.

TRIAD: Olivier Coipel [ redesigned costume ]

Adam Hughes.

XS: Jeff Moy [ she looked cute !! ]

Yeah. I agree. I still wish she had better hair, though...

APPARITION: Olivier Coipel [ although i loved Keith's version of PHANTOM GIRL probably just as much !!! ]

I choose Lee Moder's version of her. I liked that she was the waif type, as un-PC as that may sound. Coipel did maintain that look...

ULTRABOY: Olivier Coipel [ see above ... ]
Jim Sherman and Steve Lightle always seemed to draw the most muscular Jo's, which I think is very logical.

(I accidentally snipped Matthew's Timber Wolf comment, so I'll just add my own....)
I liked the way Grell drew the Cockrum design for him. It all worked. There have been many other good depictions, but I prefer Grell's still.

WILDFIRE: Keith Giffen [ 80's version, i loved the red/orange !! ]

Giffen did some impressive stuff with Wildfire using his power, so I'll agree with this one.

FERRO: [ Mike Grell ]

Curt Swan.

STARBOY: [ Keith Giffen, starfield and beard ]

Mike Grell. He just gave him that male model look, which I think fits Thom.

DREAMER / GIRL: [ Keith Giffen !!! ]

Jim Sherman. Always "done."

UMBRA: Olivier Coipel [ the hair !!! ]

The buns! Just a great rendition, overall.

KARATE KID: Steve Lighle

His look has changed a lot over the publishing history of the Legion. I suppose my favorite is Grell's Bruce Lee imitation. It's the one I knew first.

SENSOR: Steve Lightle [ with the "true" version of this character !!! ]

Jeff Moy drew the prettiest snake. Mike Grell drew the prettiest Jecky with red and yellow skimpy outfit. Giffen did the best royal costuming. LaRocque did the best Sensor Girl. Batista does a great human/snake combo.

M'ONEL: Olivier Coipel and Keith Giffen

Coipel's M'On is very impressive, especially some of those scenes against Ra's Al Ghul. Again, Mike Nasser did an impressive back up story in the 70's that had some great images of Lar. Hard to beat.

CHAMELEON: Keith Giffen

Coipel. Some really cool morphing shots and I love the expressive antennae.

KINETIX: Jeff Moy

Lee Moder. I liked her almost gawky, lanky look.

GATES: Olivier Coipel

I don't have a favorite, just because drawing him is more of a get it right or wrong scenario. Moy did some great images of him. So did cover artist Alan Davis. So did Coipel.

BRAINIAC 5: Keith Giffen and Olivier Coipel

Coipel takes it for me! LOVE the ears and sticking up hair and skinny body. Coipel brought new life to this character.

SPARK: Steve Lightle [ drawing Lightning Lass, my prefered name for Ayla ... ]

I agree, but I also like Moy's gymnast looking Ayla and Coipel's sexy farm girl. I also liked Grell's version, she looked like a 70's runway model.

VIOLET: Keith Giffen [ in the purple outfit and then later in the green !! ]

No one has topped Grell's version of her in the Cockrum design, IMO.

INVISIBLE KID: Lee Moder

I agree. He made Lyle look sneaky! Batista is doing some good work on him now, too.

Lessee....

Keith Giffen has done the best Lightning Lad, IMO.

Steve Lightle did the best Element Lad. He softened the afro.

Adam Hughes is the perfect Andromeda artist.

Giffen has done my favorite Dawnstar portrayals, though Jim Sherman is up there, too.

I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting....

Luornu has been drawn the best by the most artists, I believe.

Curt Swan made her cute as a bug's ear, she was obviously a favorite for Dave Cockrum to draw. The couple of times Grell drew her, she was stunning (see S/LSH 209 & 216).

I never much cared for Giffen's version of Lu, though.

Sprouse and Hughes drew a beautiful Lu. Moy's Lu was cute as ever and I liked Moder's Lu.

Coipel's Lu was a major hottie and Batista continues the trend!

I liked Immonen's rendition of the adult Chuck. He seemed like such a real person, and his relationship with Lu -- especially around the time that her second body was "discovered" -- rang true to me.

That was the first time that I encountered Mr. Taine in the books, because it was right after I started reading Legion. It was kind of a disappointment later to see older stories in which he was his bouncing boy self.
