Wrong even though it is true. There were actually eight presidents who took office without being elected to the Presidency. They were elected as vice presidents and then promoted from that position.

While these three are among those eight, there is still something else that sets these three apart from the other five.

Clarification: Gerald Ford was never elected as either president or vice president. I am not sure if he is one of the eight you are counting, Scott.

Nope, Ford isn't one of the eight. Just for the record the other five were:

Andrew Johnson
Theodore Roosevelt
Calvin Coolidge
Harry S. Truman
Lyndon Johnson

Neither they, nor their predecessors, served a full term in office.

Just spouting off.

I was thinking that, but then Andrew Johnson would also fit the bill.

In my high school history class the teacher would ask the class "how many electoral votes do you have to get to be president?" When we would say a number (I forget what the minimum number needed is to be elected president) My teacher would say "Wrong! none." and then talk about Gerald Ford.

Good but not quite it. And I did say Johnson would fit this if not for the length of term of his predecessor.

Last hint. I said it involved their position but I didn't say which one. Hopefully I haven't made this too convuluted.

AH, so then are they the 3 VPs with the shortest term in that office before becoming president?

It does have to do with the VP position but not the length of term. It is what was done with the VP position.

They were not filled with a replacement VP?

Nope, I know that is wrong.

No, that is right. Those three took over for their predecessor after only being in office for a short period and served their Presidential term without a VP.

Others, including Johnson did the same but either took over during a second term (as Johnson did) or succeeded themselves and had a VP who served later.

I'll take the question then. But A. Johnson only served one term and didn't have a VP either.

OK a new triad.........

But I explained that. He assumed office during Lincoln's second term so he didn't count. The others all assumed during their predecessor's first term and never had another of their own.

As for Quis's three I think they can be joined by the windscreen wiper and disposable nappies/diapers in that tey were all invented by women.

Oh ignore me on that one, I am talking rubbish. They were all invented by and named after Germans.

I don't know if they were all Germans, but they were all named after their inventors. (just checked and they were all Germans)

Take it away, Bevis!

I was going to list Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable and Montgomery Clift in the belief that The Misfits was the last completed film they all made before they died only I just checked and in fact Clift did make a few others afterwards, if only in minor roles. So instead...

Ambrose Bierce
Mike Wieringo

Probably not the right answer (unless someone hasn't told me something I should know yet).

Hmm. I can get the connection between you and Bierce but I just can't figure out where Wieringo fits in.

Bierce was featured as a detective in a novel "Ambrose Bierce and the Queen of Spades". You, of course, are famous for the Queen of Diamonds. But the only Queen I can think of to connect Wieringo with is when he drew Insect Queen in the Amalgam comics.

Wow, that's a very good connection between me and Bierce. Especially since the Queen of Diamonds is (visually) also based on me. Unfortunately it's not the right answer.
