The name was Azrael.
Although your clue makes me wonder if he was named by the Guardians of the Universe ("Smurfs") I'm pretty sure that it was actually by Mother Mayhem of the Church of Brother Blood, who tells him he is actually the Angel of Death, Azrael.

I looked up the answer after making my guess. Azrael and the Church of Brother Blood are the correct answers. The Smurfs reference is to his name "Azrael" which is the name of the evil cat in the Smurf cartoon.
