I know it is going to sound bad but.....YAHOO! I am so glad they toasted Shadow Kid. I always hated that little goofy Grev. I don't know why but everyone has certain characters that just bug them and he was mine. I loved Steves art in this one and hope to see it again soon in the pages of Legion.

Come on, [/b]I just got off the tachion phone with Umbra, and she said she climbed the wall because she thought that would give the artist more interesting visuals and besides, Grev wasn't going anywhere. There was no rush. After a little more prodding, she admitted that since she was still not quite connected to the shadows, she did not trust her ability to navigate in the dark, was afraid of flying into a flying buttress, and thought following the wall be just be more practical. Well, another controversy put to rest.

Well, another controversy put to rest. THAT'S a more logical explaination (well, sans the "talking to the character" madness ). I never said otherwise in terms of this, since you took a somewhat-out-of-context quote. I was reacting to FC's specific explaination there.

Were Kid Q and Umbra ever shown as having much kinship? Shady, Kid Q and Cham had a mini-clique going on towards the end of Legion Lost but it hasn't really been touched upon in the current series.

One complaint I had about the issue concerns the relative pacing of it versus the rest of the Legion series. Its been ages since Taz left the Legion (before the Computo arc) and yet the story begins with her arriving on Talok VIII (presumably shortly after she left) and ends with her returining to the Legion (presumably in the "present"). So are we to assume this one issue took the same amount of time as the past 12 or so issues of the series?
One possible solution is that Taz stayed on Talok VIII for awhile after regaining her powers, so the final scene of her back on Legion World is actually quite a bit after the rest of the story.

I was so giddy at the sight of Steve's art that I didn't realize til the end how thin the story was. I was pretty amused by the idea that Talok VIII basically quit the UP because bad things always happen to UP worlds... with all the catastrophic things that have happened lately, I'd have done the same. (Although it just occured to me that Xanthu wasn't even a UP world when the "robots" attacked. They were in that Khund-backed Allied Plantets or whatever it was called, right?)
Anyway, I guess the fight with Grev was sort of anti-climactic since I never really got the sense that she was going to lose. All the stuff before that went over pretty good, and the hug at the end was okay in the same way that the nod-and-a-wink ending to many an episode of "Superman" and "Star Trek" were okay. And the fact that one of Tasmia's shadowy host had on the Cockrum era Shadow Lass headdress was a nice touch from the hand of Mr. Lightle.
Steve, seeing your art on the Legion again was such a treat. The depiction of the darkened Talok VIII was particularly good. I look forward to your next issue, and hope for many more to come. With all respect to Coipel, Batista and all the other artists who've worked on the Legion of late, I love seeing somebody show those young'uns how it's done. Am I gushing? Well, what the hell? Why not!

The art was excelent, even better than I expected. The only problem I had was that Kid Q, and sometimes Umbra, looked a little too innocent. However, Umbra had an etheral quality that I really liked, and I think it would be difficult to draw that and keep her looking cynical at the same time, so I'm impressed.
As for the story, it was a little thin but I think the main problem was that It was too easy for Tas. There wasn't much suspense after the first few pages. The end was jarring. Something else else really should have been done there to show time passing. Still, overall I liked the story.

Heh heh, back to flight ring school for me! Nice to know Blockade Boy has a direct link to Umbra but don't those tachion phones cause cancer?

You doubt MY sanity, my voracity, my honesty, my virginity (oops wrong discussion)! Then explain this rash under my ear! Tachion phones DO exist, but the bill is murder on the budget.

I went to my comic book store on Thursday evening and scoured the stands to finally find what the owner said was his last copy on a display wall. Whew!
I was quite happy with the story, of course getting a complete story in one issue is like a breath of fresh air. Now if I can only hold my breath through the next multi-issue arc.
The art was different in this issue, was someone new drawing it?
(Just kidding. Thanks, Steve!)
Yeah, the hug and the wall-climbing stuck out a bit, but... whatever. Sometimes, you just gotta let it go.

Wow! I have to say that I was mucho impressed by Steve Lightle's art this issue. I haven't seen art this good in the Legion for a long while. It's too bad he can't be made regular artist as he'd get my vote. I agree that this issue did come off like a seventh Legion World issue and was a very short read. Character interaction/development rather than character reaction to events has always been DNA's weak spot and it wouldn't hurt for them to try a little harder in this area.

This issue deserves to be re-read. I've read it four times already, and each time I find a bit of dialogue I hadn't noticed before or something new lurking in the shadows. Needless to say, the art is terrific and, storywise, what we have in the end is pretty satisfying too -- Tasmia at the apex of her powers, as ready as she'll ever be to wage battle against the Legion's greatest foe. She played an important role in the GDS and I look forward to seeing more of her and her shadow-champion ancestors over the next few months. Plus, her new costume -- what little there is of it -- is stunning! Maybe M'onel will finally sit up and take notice.

I agree, this is the type of issue that NEEDS to be reread.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and have missed Tasmia terribly.
Best Lightle artwork I have ever seen, stunning throughout.
From page ONE I knew this was gonna be a good issue.
I think some of the DnA criticisms are undeserved, some deserved.
But alls I can say is, from me it gets a grade of A.
I cannot end this post without saying that I LOVE LOVE LOVE the visual of Tasmia's shadow ancestors in her shadow. Fantastic! I assume this was DnA's idea and Steve's visual. They pulled it off excellently together!

Are the spirits of her ancestors even truly "inside" her any more?

Well I don't know that I NEED an explanation...no, about face, I think you are right. But just a one-liner accepted at face value. As silly as this could be played from even a SF "realistic" view, it is good comic book stuff.
Could you imagine if Giffen got ahold of this? The shadow warriers doing shadow puppets instead of going to sleep. Routines of "Me and My Shadow." Crowded elevator scenes in every issue. Shadows playing keep-away with the crotch armor. It would put Thunderbolt's goofyness to shame.
This idea of a wielded "elemental" ancestral shadow force, a combination of Green Lantern energy and speedforce with a little bit of Hawkman thrown in, is just an awesome idea. What a powerful character Tasmia has become, rich in potential story.

I gave a detailed response to this issue at Calling the Roll, but here are some notes...
As a major Lightle fan, I'm thrilled with the artwork. He depicted Tasmia as very very sexy, of course, but also young. She has that regal look, as her training would make her and she maintains her touch of arrogance without looking bitter. I love that she has six earrings! I love the sexy costume, too. Dreamer wasn't shown with the Legion belt, and neither is Umbra now. Are the Legionnaires going to gradually do away with them? Or will they be added? We'll see..
The flight ring. The way I read the scene, Tas started to fly up the tower, but Shadow Maven called out to her. This made her stop near the top, but not all the way, so she could hear what Maven was saying. She then proceeded to climb to the opening, since she was pretty close anyway.
Maven. Did DnA ever come across Sk8Maven at the DC boards? I kept wondering that....
I wasn't bothered by the fact that the distant (dead) cousin's name is Grev. I don't consider this to be a reboot of Shadow Kid. I wonder if this dead guy's name should have been something else, though, just to prevent controversy. OTOH, controversy can be good.
I was more bothered by the fact that the Darkness didn't do anything wrong. It was doing what the Talokians wanted. It was Tasmia who said it wasn't right. Do the leaders of Talok agree with her? Now that she's taken the Shadow back, are they just going to get over their concerns about the UP? That quickly? We're led to believe so, but we weren't shown that meeting.
I, like others, was curious about the passage of time. After she defeated Grev and took back the Shadow, did she stay on Talok and fix all this political business? I'd have liked to see that. I feel like I'm having to fill in a lot of blanks.
The Hug. I felt like Jaz was just really impressed and pleased with this great, kinda "new" Umbra. She was just talking about wanting to be there for Talok. Jaz welcomed her back, and Tas gave a polite thank you. Jaz just couldn't help herself. She went for it. The hug was cute. I like the way Steve drew Jaz. Very cute.
I like the shadow ancestors hanging around Tasmia. I can't wait to see how they're depicted in future appearances.
So, I had some problems with the big picture, but I wasn't as bothered by some of the details as others.

Honestly? I kinda feel a bit off saying this since Steve posts here but the art didn't thrill me at all. I'm probably one of the few on the boards who don't like Steve Lightle's art but there's something about it that just doesn't appeal to me. It's not just the distortion of the figures and such because, well, some of the artists that I love (Peter Gross, Tim Sale, even Olivier Coipel) go in for the same thing big time and it doesn't bother me. So while I didn't think the art was bad exactly it certainly wasn't to my taste. I also have to say i really dislike Umbra's new outfit. Both the version designed by Olivier and Steve's version of it. Just seems like the kind of thing that DC were finally moving away from for their female characters and more like some of the trash that Marvel has been churning out in it's Tsunami line. Ugh. I quite like her hair with the braid though. As for the story. Hmm, well, it was a fun read but very slight. Kind of felt like it could have been done with in only a few pages rather than a full issue. I don't think it was a wasted issue, just a bit thin I guess. Oh and with regards to Grev that story point didn't do anything for me. I think the problem was that we just didn't care for him. As someone who's never read any of the preboot stories the only reason I even know he's a rebooted character is that others have mentioned it. Within the story i had no reason to care for him or be shocked that he was dead because in a way he was never alive, if you see what I mean. As for those who do know him of old I imagine that they feel kind of the same way. He may have the same name as he did before but we don't see anything of him to be able to link him emotionally to an old character. It's not even like Condo being brought back but not as a main character because Grev is a key plot point, it's hard to imagine that we're not meant to be shocked by the fact he's dead. But if we don't kow who he is in terms of his character then how are we supposed to care? So all in all I guess it was an OK issue. Certainly not the best but not bad really. Just a bit mneh. Course it didn't help that I got it in the same batch as Bales: The Last Castle and Hellblazer so it was bound to pale in comparison.

I was rereading the issue last night and another thing annoyed me that I hadn't noticed before. There are only 2 facing page spreads in the whole story, one at the beginning and another at the end. Every other spread consists of one page of story and another page of ads.
That's a lot of page turning for a story that should've been half as long to begin with.
