If you are one of the (few, like me) fans of the Giffen era Legion, he will be appearing at the Los Angeles Comic Convention this Sunday (December 12th, 2004) at the Shrine Auditorium. Also appearing will be Jessica Biel & David S. Goyer promoting Blade Trinity. For more info: http://www.comicbookscifi.com/ Admission is only $6 to this rat infested venue, so I'll see you there! I'll be the (only) one (I'm sure) wearing an Echo & the Bunnymen shirt.

Which Giffen-era Legion? The first one was artistic and storytelling light years from the second. I'm tempted to bring a printout of a high-res scan of this panel and ask him to ... sign it. In the large expanse of epidermis at upper left. It might make up for some things. If you see my beard, say hello. By the way, the Shrine Auditorium Expo Center is not "rat-infested," it's just comparatively "old." As old as anything can be in the City of Angels, where the "Hollywood" sign is almost ancient architecture.

LOL are u telling me that all the plastic in Hollywood isn't the remains of some alien creature that crashlanded and died in the desert?
i thought we were living in the bones of ancient alien dead
it was the only way to explain most things
And Lantern, I loved a lot of the TMK legion too

Or maybe that was Burt Ward.

I showed up, though I didn't see Lantern Lad's shirt. Giffen was busily and cheerily alternating doing quick sketches -- no apparent charge for them, which is to his credit -- and scrawling his initials on anything presented to him. See them on his "convention edition" (limited-edition cover) of "Hero Squared" X-tra Sized Special, from Atomeka Press . (Click at right below for larger version.) The book is written and created by Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis, and drawn by Joe Abraham, with the regular-edition cover by Kevin McGuire (click at left below), and retails for $3.99. It's intriguing and funny, what I've read of it thus far. And by the way, it's 32 pages of full-color art for that price, no ads except inside and outside back covers. Giffen, who's about as bearded as I am, but a lot thinner, also signed my copy of "LSH" v3 n1 on the cover. I decided I didn't have the bad manners, after all, to ask him to do so on my sister's rear end in issue 2. I did like his art back then, so I held myself back *sigh* He was too busy for me to introduce myself, but entirely gracious when I said to him, "Nice to see you drawing the Legion again." (Well, it was gratifying to see him doing so, even though I didn't care for the result in "Legion" 31. I blame DnA for the lame-ass story, more now than Giffen for the lazy art.) He thanked me and replied, "It was my farewell to them -- I'd never had a chance to say goodbye to them properly." A picture of Giffen will come eventually, when I shoot the other 25 pictures on my disposable camera ... probably around 2006, at my usual rate, unless I go crazy at the next Comic-Con. I've got to get digital *sigh squared*

Grey and Giffen in the same room...there was a time I would have said one of you might not make it out alive. Maybe peace in the Middle East IS possible.
(cut to imaginary scene)
Giffen's eyes being clawed out as a deranged Greybird screams "DDDAAAAAWWWWNNNNSSSTTTAAARRRRR!"
The only consistent feature of all of your dissatisfying relationships is you.
Don't judge me!

Ah, but I was in my "real" non-alter-ego, not where I was swooping down to pick his skinny bones clean and avenge my family in a <font size="-2">RIGHTEOUS CAUSE</font s> ... {ahem!} so civility was, er, called for here. Next time, though ... !

That was, again, my "real" self talking. Who thought that if Giffen couldn't make up for how he dissed and abused my favorite character by -- you wanted to know -- kissing her there, he could at least sign her there. I'm not that much of a boor, though, however much Giffen was about the character in print. Now, to move back to fictional worlds, there's Dawny's best friend Angelus, on the other hand ... ![[Linked Image]](http://mywebpage.netscape.com/Greybird007/other/AngelusGiffen.jpg)

Keith was quite cool and made sure to tell me that Echo & the Bunnymen were: "A GREAT BAND!!!"
That was quite cool. He signed approximately 60 books for me ranging from LSH - Dr. Fate (mini) - Justice League (the funny years). An incredibly warm guy. He told me brief stories behind the making of certain issues and his *true* feelings towards some of DC's decisions.
AWESOME day at the convention.

Just stories about writing the Legion and Justice League... He destroyed the Earth as an "F-you" to DC because he was "leaving" the book & how he hated the fact that Gaiman "got his dirty mits" on that issue too. Issue # 5 of LSH (the return of Andrew & manipulation of Glorith) was his absolute favorite & that he asked the powers that be if he could stay in that time period for a few issues and they said "no"... Some of the same things about Justice League. One interesting tidbit was that he wanted to have an issue where Beetle & Booster accidentally blew up the JL headquarters & sent the entire JL into Hell where Booster & Beetle had to play twister against the Devil for the souls of the JL. DC, again said no & 6 months later "Bill & Teds Bogus Journey" came out where the titular characters did much the same thing. So, there was some angst there. On the flip side, he pointed out that the Despero saga from JL was one of his favorites (though he didn't like the android Mr. Miracle saga). He thouroughly enjoyed writing L.E.G.I.O.N. and thought that Kitson's art was amazing... and the only thing he said about the new LSH series is that Kitson's art was beautiful. Couldn't agree more. I was a bit star-struck... the guy wrote 75% (if not more) of what I read growing up so I didn't think to ask him any of the questions I wanted to. But he was very welcoming & enthusiastically signed everything. Although I did hear a lot of: "God, I haven't seen this in years... where did you find this stuff, etc."

Sounds like you had a blast LL. I treat conventions like social events too. It's so much more fun that way. Only 6 bucks to get in? Sweet.

The L.A. Comic Book and Science Fiction Convention (they have a Website for details and programs) has been, until now, held on a Sunday near the middle of each month, 10 am to 5 pm. They're changing format next year, however, to beef up the guests and programs at what has been nearly entirely a dealer's room. The next one will be held in mid-February. Admission is indeed $6 and you can pass in or out of the hall all day with a hand stamp. Parking next door is $7 all day, which isn't mentioned on their site -- and you'll need to pay for it, as this is just north of USC.

huge Giffen fan here, too. The man is responsible for many of my favorite comics moments too... my list of "always keep" comics certainly wuld be smaller without Giffen... no Ambush Bug, no 80s JL, no Heckler etc etc.
I am very very interested in the new small-press series. It is available now?

Once a month... on Sundays, usually at the Shrine Auditorium (unless there's an awards show the same weekend). Found great deals there on old TOLSH, only $.75-$1 each.
