SHOOTER OFF LEGION

With Mark Waid leaving "Legion," many thought this would be the moment Jim Shooter would take over the book.

That was certainly the belief at DC. Many of the people who had a problem with Jim Shooter elaborated upon here, have left the corporation, or have found their influence reduced, and the appointment had Levitz and DiDio's direct blessing.

However, in a twist of fate, I understand Shooter has left the Legion project on his own. Before anyone even had the chance to announce it.

No fear, Shooter's got his own project to work on based around selling the Kaballah to children, called "Seven." Not "Ten." I don't know why.

Yellow flag, day after All Fool's Day. Hmm. Makes me wonder if this is dis-information or if he's got a real story.

Explains why Bedard may only be doing six issues.

In a way I'm relieved. I worry what Shooter would've done. It could've been genius or horrible. ohwell.

Well, Johnston was the one who announced the rumor to begin with back in November. So who knows if we'll ever really get an official story when he was the only one talking about it.

Plus I don't think Shooter would have been doing the current book. It would have been more of a one-shot or an All-Star title.

It wouldn't surprise me if there were problems with which version of the Legion he would be doing. I can't imagine him writing either Waid's Legion or Levitz's Legion (assuming that's who is showing up in JSA). And it's possible TPTB didn't want to confuse things even further with a third Legion (Shooter's) running around.

Jim Shooter returning to the Legion was one of the worst kept secrets in comics. By all indications, he was going to take over the regular book (remember, Mark Waid left early because of Barry's departure; Tony Bedard's issues will finish off the third year of the current reboot, which suggests Shooter wasn't scheduled to take over until then and Waid's early departure threw a wrench in things) and I don't think it's a coincidence that characters from the original Legion continuity were showing up in JSA. Admittedly, DC played it's cards close to its chest, but this information was leaked out long ago, and lots of people knew it.

Johnston's been bang-on every time he's reported on this story - I don't see why he'd be wrong now.

I had my doubts about this anyway. While I would have loved to get an All Star book or a graphic novel out of this I couldn't see Shooter being able to maintain any work at a level that would have captured the imagination of a modern audience.

A Perez/Shooter sequel to Superboy's Legion would have been very very cool though.

Bang-on everytime? This is only the second time he's spoken about it. The first being last November. And while "lots of people" may have known about it I never so it confirmed or mentioned elsewhere that wasn't using LitG as the source. We could debate this forever but unless someone who really knows the deal (Levitz or Shooter) say something it'll all just be speculation based on a comic gossip column. I still find it hard to believe that he would have been given the current Legion unless it was totally done away with.

Here's a link to the second part of an interview with Shooter. He mentions why he's not doing a Legion book. Silver Bullets

Scott, trust me, there are more sources than LitG on this. This goes back to November, when Johnston also first reported it.

As far as the current Legion being "totally done away with," I can't confirm anything there, but DC is in the business of making money. If Jim Shooter wanted to use a version of the Legion different than the current one and DC thought that it'd sell better than the current one, don't kid yourself - they'd go with the best seller every time.
The Legion was given a shot in the arm by Supergirl, but the sales have come back down to where they usually are - within 5K on either side of 30K - and if DC thought that they could do for the Legion what bringing back Hal Jordan did for Green Lantern, I don't think they'd hesitate.

Remember, the current reboot was supposed to "fix" the Legion, but instead, it's sales are ending back up where they were before the reboot. One can only assume that they had higher hopes for it.

That interview is three years old. Things were different last year.

I for one am disappointed. I think Shooter would have given LSH the real shot in the arm it's been needing for the past 4-5 years.

The childhood friend Exnihil never had.

I think Shooter could have used the current Legion too. It's not like he invented the original Legion from scratch. He worked with what went before.

And there's no law that says he had to do his "last Legion story," yet either.

Too bad it would have been interesting.

Not saying I doubt you Glen and hopefully I didn't offend. If I did, I apologize. I was just saying the only mentions I ever found all traced their way back to LitG. And I've been burned before by pinning hopes on a Johnston rumor. But, especially when it involves the Legion, I'll probably due it again.

It was a rumor the first time and it's a rumor this time. I don't see the need to really get up in arms about it either way. We will see what will happen one way or another, I don't think there's any need to get carried away too far with this.

Either way I don't think Shooter is the best person for this incarnation of the Legion, like others have said. There are other people writing for DC right now that I think would be better suited for it. That's not to say that a mini-series in the All Star format would be a bad idea.

I love and respect all the work Shooter did on the Legion, but man, read that interview. He rarely has a nice word to say about anybody! No wonder no one wants to work with him.

...but you don't have a moment where you're sitting there staring at a table full of twenty-five characters with little name signs that say, "Hi, my superpower is confusing you!"

I think Shooter would be better suited for his "Last Legion Story" than this current run, or even the wished for "All-Star Legion". I'll buy it either way though. He did right by the Legion the first time, and the Valiant stuff he did was awesome!

Hey, no need to apologize and no offense taken.

Shooter on the Legion is like David Lee Roth in Van Halen: much ballyhooed but not a reality until it actually happens. Given his Avengers experience a few years back, I had a "wait and see" attitude, too. There was definitely something in the works, though. Exactly what we won't know until someone talks.

What is Shooter doing these days? Is he still in the writing or editing business?

Who's to say 'this' incarnation would have been the same one, if he had been writer? I only hope that the Legion is put back on track after so many years of Waid tinkering with it.

It's funny that Brevoort was so hardcore editing Shooter yet seems to let Millar and Bendis do what they please.

Anyways, I agree that Shooter could've used this Legion but I preferred he didn't. I would love to see an Elseworlds or All Star Legion by him instead.

I think this current Legion does need change but nothing too dramatic. smile

I'm not sorry at all. Shooter's return to the Legion could have been either a masterpiece or a disaster, but I think the latter was far more likely.

My more-than-not-at-all-informed impression of the situation is that DC was planning on Shooter to take over for Bedard, and now don't know quite what they're going to do. From an artistic point of view, I don't have any qualms about letting Bedard see what he can do, but DC may have a different take on the situation from a financial perspective.
