Why not? I always was suspicious of Grimbor and Charma.

The result of a late night bowl of chili? That's a question I'd ask JS.

Obviously I think Shooter's second run is great also. Part of it may be sentiment... this is the Legion I grew up with. But there's some clever, well-done stories in there. It's a lost art to tell a good comic story in 6-12 pages, which is what Shooter was limited to most of the time in that era, but he managed to do it. And he somehow managed to work in bits of character development, like Element Lad's survivor grief or Ultra Boy's claustrophobia. Being a cranky old-timer, I'm not a fan of today's decompression, and it amazes me that there is actually more story in one of these old 8-pagers than in two or three issues of some modern comics. My personal favorite 70's Shooter issue is #219, a rare instance where he got a full 17 pages to tell a story. And the back-up story from #217 "Future Shock for Superboy" is also great, with a clever surprise ending. Anyone who hasn't read that should check it out here .

The man's a genius with villains... The Fatal 5, Charma, Grimbor, Quicksand, Holdur, Stargrave... the more I think of it, the more excited I get.
We've got to move heaven and earth to get Jim signed up here on Legion World!

Francis, pardon my small thought but I was wondering if we'll see a replacement of the masthead for the Legion since it appears that Supergirl's already out of the picture. I think it's a given we'll get "Legion of Super-Heroes" but I wonder if it will be the same masthead that we started with or will there be a change.
Personally, I hope there's a change. We may not get a #1 or a reboot (not getting both being something that isn't that big a deal with me personally) but I'm hoping we see a new masthead on that cover.
On the side, if S&M's run had started with #38 it would echo the changes we've seen in the past around that issue number (pre-boot #38's death of superboy & TMK #38 where the Earth blows up).

Count me in as another huge fan of the Soljer story. I actually think those issues during Shooter's second run as a pure pleasure to read.
Like Lash says, the man is a genius when it comes to villains, supporting characters and 'walk-on characters'.
I find myself more excited each day with the buzz surrounding his next run.

In looking over those issues, it amazes me how many I NEVER read. Must have been because I had a subscription to the book at that point and half of them never got delivered! So, I have never read the Soljer story. Guess I will have to spring for the Archives.
I do remember very fondly the Element Lad/Roxxas story and the Ultra Boy/Ben Peres story. As a kid, "The Ultimate Revenge" was probably my favorite comic. It was a natural and dramatic exploration of both Element Lad and Roxxas. Plus, it used Chemical King in a cool way, one of the few times I think his power was used "correctly."
The "Jaws of Fear" was not my first intro to Ultra Boy, but it was the most memorable story of him from my early childhood (until the Jim Starlin murder frame-up story). You can see in that story some of the darker qualities that Shooter saw in the UBoy character. It was a great story for showing that a hero doesn't lack fear, he faces and conquers it. (Plus, I will likely always remember this ish because it came in the mail on the same day we went to the Texas State Fair that year!)
My strong hope is that Shooter brings that same level of character-based storytelling to his current run. Again, Waid started off that way and then got all wrapped up in the cosmic crisis of the moment, and the characterizations suffered greatly.
...but you don't have a moment where you're sitting there staring at a table full of twenty-five characters with little name signs that say, "Hi, my superpower is confusing you!"

Welcome back Mr. Shooter! To say that you are the reason this fan ever got involved with the wonder that is LSH (over 30 years ago) would be an understatement. I wish you nothing but the best of success during your run and hope that it is another looooong one!

Just thought I'd mention that Jim Shooter's presumed first issue, #37, ought to be on shelves right at Christmastime.

Well I just got done reading Shooter's second run(I guess technically it was his 3rd run since he kind of went off the title for a bit during the Action run).
It was great. Yeah there weren't many multi-part epics but that's not Shooter's fault, that was Boltinoff's editorial focus....Shooter pretty much introduced the multi-part Legion epic in his first run.
To be fair, for fans of characterization and unique backstories etc...those backups from the Boltinoff era probably were when most of that was done and were the founddation for most of what came during the Levitz run. Murray Boltinoff...who knwew?
I think those stories were pretty important.
I personally like Shooter's way of taking a group of 4 or 5 Legionaires and focusing on them for a story....
I don't like trying to focus on 25 different characters in the midst of a multi part mega epic..it makes you feel like you have ADD.
Focusing on a small group was also something Shooter did to great effect during his Adeventure Run...
I looked up the circulation figures for the Shooter Run...
450k average readers per month and the book went from being published 8 times per year to full monthly status...
Keep in mind...this wasn't the sixties...but the mid 70's...those numbers were huge.
That run isn't very critically acclaimed...but it was pretty good, it was arguably the most popular era of the Legion...as well as the most iconic...and IMO, it's one of the key eras of the Legion. 11 page stories or not.
Something else else else to think about...Shooter was only 23 or 24 years old during his second run.
