Hehe. Good one.

Actually, the format of the letter columns somewhat turned me off because I always saw it as a 1v1 discussion. Even if I had something to add to the conversation, I couldn't. Message boards allow that opportunity.

To each, their own preferences, though. I just don't see letter columns as very feasible these days when you can do the same thing on message boards, or even set up a dedicated web page on the DC site just to answer letters for a fraction of the cost.

I also forgot to add in distributor markups + extra shipping into the diatribe equation. Oh, well frown

I never said "add". I thought I'd made it clear above that I wasn't expecting them to add any pages.

I'm grateful for the cost analysis, though. It was very interesting to read.

What Letters get Printed

Picking WOULD BE involved, whether you like to admit it or not.
Never said it wouldn't be. All I did was reject your worst-case scenario due to lack of evidence.

In fact, if there were enough letters to justify a letters page, there would have to be some selection because there likely wouldn't be enough space for all of them to see print. But, in order to do that, sonebody, likely an editor or assistant, has to read at least some of them. Ergo, they get feedback.

Message Board Legality

Unless you are posting unauthorized material that has not been published (i.e. me ripping off the #3 B&W from Wondercon, uploading the images, and posting them), 99% of the media legal departments will be doing jack squat to shut the message boards down. Even then, they'd probably demand that you take it down before they'd have the legal right to shut your message board off (due process). I'd say that the odds of Legion World getting shut down are pretty slim and from what I've seen, the mods here have been pretty good about removing things like solicits before they're scheduled for release.
This is a very well-run board, no question.

IIRC, though, it isn't just unauthorized material that can get you in trouble. Sometimes just having *too much* stuff can get you in trouble.

Ultimately, though, we don't get to decide what "too much" is.

Letter Columns
Letter columns came into existance because at the time, there was no other format for feedback from the creative team. The internet has changed that and we witness this daily. We get feedback now. We get it for free (other than the site's bandwith cost) and we get it without a 3 issue lag.

I've already addressed the notion of extra costs, so I'll skip it here.

I think the idea of more immediate feedback from the creators shouldn't be considered as a given. It's not. It's a bonus. A great one, mind you, but it's not a guaranteed part of the message board experience. Boards have much more to do with people sharing similar interests communicating with one another.
