Yep...I was about 7 when I started reading too and I never found it that complicated. Every other month there was a new issue (if you could find one at the 7-Eleven) and you almost always got to find out about someone new who had a neat power/name/costume/home planet/origin and I was instantly hooked.

I immediately latched onto Mon-el as my favorite (especially that issue where he slapped Supes silly when he was being a doofus over not being Legion leader when Wildfire was sworn in).

What was nice was how a few years later, Levitz was able to bring together all the little bits and pieces of throwaway knowledge we gathered over the years and make the Legion universe come to life in a way that it never had before. Remember how Levitz took the old Adventure Comics Computo and made Earth freak out and begin evacuations in LSH Annual 1 when Brainy reactivated Computo?

That's the kind of thing that made the history work for the Legion and I miss it.

I started reading during the TMK era & found it confusing simply because I really knew NONE of the characters. So, instead of dropping the book (because I liked it quite a bit), I just did what I normally do... buy every back issue.

I caught on real quick after the first couple issues. The only difficulty I had was with Giffen's art (at first), all the guys looked the same, only hair color/length was different. Otherwise, if you pay attention, you get it.

The Legionnaires went through a period in the 70s where they really enjoy slapping each other around! My favorite such instance occurs in Superboy/LSH # 215!

If it wasn't for Who's Who in the Legion I may not have become the big Legion fan I am today.

Still the Legion was far easier to understand than DC. As an 8 year old trying to figure out who the Earth 2 old guy Flash is or the christmas tree Green Lantern...plus Supergirl/Powergirl...(heck no one still can figure that out).

the continuity was fun ... from the time i discovered the Legion (around 1980 when i was 8) to my teen years, i had soft spots for characters i had only caught in cameo -- like Kid Psycho or Chemical King ... and then - hitting my 20s, i tracked down the relevant back issues (i really felt grown up at that point)

series like Secrets of the Legion and Who's Who in the Legion just helped feed that curiousity about all things Legion

oh, and by the way, i was one of those kids who smelled like pot for most of the teen years and i loved the multiple earths, the continuity of the Legion, even high
never 'too complicated'

(to compare, i dropped most of the X & spider line for being far too convoluted with clones, drones and mystery siblings)

Hey Andy,

I never had a problem with the legion. Like you things I didn't know just made more curious.

I guess the normal DCU confused me cause I had preconcieved ideas about it. All the media on tv from Super Friends, the various Superman/Batman shows and films. Plus my first comics were Marvel that IMO were friendlier than DCU...less continuity. (this was before Spidey clones)

For some reason the Earth 2 stuff just confused me. Seeing another GL who looked a christmas tree, a Flash with gray hair (not cool when you are 8), complicated Superman stuff...let's just say Crisis helped me understand things. smile Which mind you I am not saying it was a good thing...not sure DC needed a "reboot" but streamlining and explaining things sure was welcomed.
